This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded the Texas State Historical Association's Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Prize; presented March 2005 Despite controversies over current educational practices, Texas boasts a rich and vibrant bilingual tradition-and not just for Spanish-English instruction, but for Czech, German, Polish, and Dutch as well. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Texas educational policymakers embraced, ignored, rejected, outlawed, then once again embraced this tradition. In The Strange Career of Bilingual Education in Texas, author Carlos Blanton traces the educational policies and their underlying rationales, from Stephen F. Austin's proposal in the 1830s to "Mexicanize" Anglo children by teaching them Spanish along with English and French, through the 1981 passage of the most encompassing bilingual education law in the state's history. Blanton draws on primary materials, such as the handwritten records of county administrators and the minutes of state education meetings, and presents the Texas experience in light of national trends and movements, such as Progressive Education, the Americanization Movement, and the Good Neighbor Movement. By tracing the many changes that eventually led to the re-establishment of bilingual education in its modern form in the 1960s and the 1981 passage of a landmark state law, Blanton reconnects Texas with its bilingual past. CARLOS KEVIN BLANTON, an assistant professor of history at Texas A&M University, earned his Ph.D. from Rice University. His research in Mexican American educational history has been published in journals such as the Pacific Historical Review and Social Science Quarterly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on the purposes of bilingual education programs in schools and their historical development from the 1960s to the present. In this timely resource, educator Rosa Castro Feinberg surveys the developing field of bilingual education—its history, its theories, its practices, and the conflicts that swirl around it. She begins with an annotated chronology that describes influential people and events and traces themes in bilingual education from precolonial times to the present. In three detailed chapters, Feinberg summarizes the widely varied state and local policies and bilingual programs across the country, and demonstrates the profound impact of federal legislation, policies, and court decisions. She also examines the political challenge to linguistic diversity by anti-immigration groups and the common myths about bilingual education that have grown out of the media's handling of identity politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume brings together findings from six separate but interconnected studies, carried out over seven years in the same small bilingual elementary school. During a period of rapid gentrification in Austin, Texas, Hillside Elementary transformed from a predominantly Latinx, under-resourced and under-enrolled neighborhood school with a transitional bilingual program to a two-way dual language bilingual education (TWBE) school with a waiting list of middle-class families from across the school district. Chapter authors entered the context as researchers at various points along the timeline, with varied theoretical lenses, research questions, and methodological approaches. Most authors have also been parents or teachers at the school, and all were deeply invested in the school community and the education of bilingual students. They come together to argue that in order for a TWBE school to serve marginalized bilingual and BIPOC children and families, it must work collectively toward critical consciousness. Educators, parents, and students must learn to center the cultural, linguistic and racial/ethnic identities of marginalized families, and engage in ongoing dialogue at every level. The culminating product is a theme with variations: one context, one phenomenon, multiple varied positionalities and perspectives.

Book excerpt: The National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE) published electronic issues of Volumes 1 and 2 of the NABE Journal of Research and Practice to offer archival records of 2002 and 2003 NABE conferences presentations. Beginning with Volume 3, the title of the publication is changed to NABE Review of Research and Practice and is published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. for NABE. NABE Review of Research and Practice, Volume 3 fulfills the following goals: *to establish an annual archival record of cutting-edge NABE conference presentations that generate new knowledge and advance the field of bilingual education research; *to mentor junior scholars within the academic setting by providing an outlet for developing a publication record with the assistance of established scholars, and by publishing guidelines for developing high-quality dissertation research proposals and completed studies, and for university-based efforts to mentor doctoral students in bilingual education; *to offer, in the Research section, an outlet for theoretical and applied research studies that represent innovative conceptual and philosophical perspectives, and that also implement innovative methodologies for solving theoretical and applied problems in bilingual education; *to provide, in the AppliedEducation/Action Research section, an outlet for case studies, position papers, and action research that comes from practitioners in the field of bilingual education who are implementing research methodologies in their own classrooms or school districts (e.g., teacher-based research, evaluation studies conducted in the implementation of bilingual education federal and state grants); and *to present, in the Position Papers and Reflections section, reflections of experiences of bilingual researchers, practitioners, and public school and higher education students that give insightful self-accounts of the experiences of ethnic minority students, scholars, and educators that allow readers to learn from them as role models and advocates.
