Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology, 1849, Vol. 2 Man perishes; but the passions common to human nature will endure as long as the world exists hence the interest in them never ceases, never becomes obsolete; hence our sympathy with the joys and sor rows of the long since dead, as if they were yet among the living. The passions, and among these the master passion especially, supply us with countless examples of the agency of the body on the mind, of the mind on the body; of the re-agency of each on the other. With the advance of life, their development becomes more complete, their tendencies and objects more clearly understood. As in the female sex the frame becomes more womanly, a thousand new graces come into view; the mind itself, in becoming more mature, becomes more feminine: in both sexes, the distinctions of sex become more marked and definite. In the male sex, not the aspect and voice only, but the mind undergoes a change. Those changes in persons of both sexes which are of a psycho logical character are matters of as plain recognition as those which are physical; and so also are any pauses in the march of nature towards6 the psychology or ms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology, 1879, Vol. 5 The nurse Gough slept in a room on the first floor. On the opposite side of the same room Saville Kent slept in a crib, and in another crib, adjoining the bed of the nurse, the little girl, his younger sister, slept. The elder girl was in her mother's room on the Opposite side of the passage. About five o'clock the nurse woke. She stated that looking across to the little boy's crib she saw that he was not there, but did not feel any alarm, as she supposed that his mother had fetched him during the night. It was not until some hours afterwards, that on going to her mistress's room she found that he was not there. It should be mentioned here that on the housemaid going down stairs to open the windows, she found the shutters of the draw ing-room window unfastened and the window partly raised. On the child being missed a search took place, and on examining the closet in the garden a pool of blood was found on the floor, and the body of the child was discovered in the vault amongst the soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology, 1858, Vol. 11 It is a curious and interesting study to trace the variety of opinions which have been held concerning the respective existence and the mutual relations of the Body and the Intellectual Principle - opinions which have, in turn, taken up every position between the absolute non-existence of Mind, save as a form or function of Matter, on the one hand; and, on the other, the merely phenomenal existence of Matter dependent upon the variations of a sentient or thinking immaterial existence, the Mind. It was only at a comparatively late period in the world's history that Mind obtained from philosophy its formal recognition as a distinct entity; as something superadded to, and distinct from, Matter; closely united, yet not allied; dependent for its manifestation, but independent in essence. In these latter days, when Mind and Matter are the watchwords equally of domestic discussion, of rival though friendly schools of philosophy, and of fierce sectarian controversy, it is difficult for us to realize to ourselves the state of the schools in which the laws of human nature were taught as a great whole. Yet so it was; it was with man as with the universe at large - he must be one and undivided. As the first attempts at the formation of systems of cosmogony were too vast in their designs to do less than account on one theory for the whole cosmical phenomena, the formation of the universe was ascribed to one principle, as heat, atoms, attraction and repulsion, fire, harmony, numbers, &c., no note being taken of the ever progressive workings of the individual forces continually in operation throughout nature, or the mechanical results of the conditional existence of matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology, 1854, Vol. 9 During the past quarter, two vacancies on the Board of Lunacy Commissioners have occurred; one occasioned by the retirement of Dr. Turner, and the second by the death of Mr. Mylne, the barrister. Dr. Turner's unfortunate infirmity of sight was considered materially to interfere with his usefulness and the efficient performance of his duties; and, consequently, it was considered necessary that he should vacate his official position, if not to a better man, at least to one who had a perfect use of his visual powers. Dr. Turner was much esteemed by all who had an opportunity of witnessing the unvarying gentlemanly urbanity, kindness, and tact with which he uniformly performed the duties assigned to him as one of the Medical Commissioners in Lunacy. He always exhibited great judgment in the exercise of his responsible functions; and whenever he had suggestions to make with reference to the domestic conduct of lunatic asylums, or the treatment of those confined in institutions licensed for the care and treatment of the insane, it was done with great gentlemanly discrimination, and with a kind and delicate consideration and regard for the feelings of others. Although exercising great authority, and armed with stringent legal powers, he had the good taste never to let others feel that they were in a position subordinate to himself. His loss will be, on this account, severely felt. His great experience in the investigation of cases of insanity much enhanced the value of his opinion on all occasions, and gave undeniable confidence in his judgment. It is understood that the Treasury has granted Dr. Turner a retiring pension of 350 per annum, - a small pittance considering his advanced age, and the lengthened period zealously devoted to anxious and important official services. Mr. Mylne's death has caused a vacancy among the legal members of the board of the Commissioners. This gentleman's health had for some time given his family and friends cause for much anxiety. He suffered from great bronchial irritation, of which he is reported ultimately to have died at his residence in Onslow Square. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology, Vol. 1: April, 1875 Professor Tyndall Opens his Address with a sketch of the atomic philosophy, as propounded by Democritus and his suc cessors. Their speculations, though extremely interesting, are so well known as to require little comment, except in SO far as they prove that the atomic theory, which he preaches as zealously as if it were a new religion, is more than two thou sand years old. His admiration for, and faith in, Lucretius are unbounded. He remarks, with evident satisfaction, Lucretius' notions that the mechanical shock of atoms is the all-suffi cient cause of things, and that the constitution of nature has not been in any way determined by intelligent design and he quotes the following atheistical passage from the poet's writings: If you will apprehend and keep in mind these things, nature, free at once, and rid of her haughty lords, is seen to do all things spontaneously of herself, without the meddling of the gods. After this, no wonder that Plato and Aristotle are dismissed with scant praise. In enquiring into the causes which checked the advance Of science during the many centuries that passed unmarked by any philosophic discovery, after the days Of Pythagoras, Hip parchus, and Ptolemy, the Professor mentions the various causes assigned by other writers, and then proceeds to speak with very bad taste of the introduction of Christianity as one Of the stumbling-blocks in the path of progress, though he pays a great and glowing tribute to the heroic fortitude and pure lives of the early Christians. How could he do otherwise? He evidently considers that the benefits conferred by Chris tianity are to be reckoned as Of small importance if science be at stake. I cannot be surprised at this, when I see by a note in the reprint that one Of his great authorities is the infidel Renan. It is painful to notice throughout the Address the tendency to place religion in antagonism to science, as if we were living in the days of the Inquisition, and it was necessary for Dr. Tyndall to come forward as the champion Of free-thought. Never has there been a time of such entire civil and religious liberty as now, when even the atheist Bradlaugh can spout his blasphemy in Hyde Park or Trafalgar Square without the slightest hindrance; surely this ought to satisfy the Professor. In the present century some of our best scientific workers have been members of the clerical profession. Few names among geologists are more distinguished than that of the Rev. W. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology, Vol. 13 It is recorded of Heimdall, the warder of the Scandinavian gods, that the subtlety of his ear was so great that he could hear the grass growing in the meadows, and the wool on the backs of the sheep. There is a segment of society who, lacking this acuteness of sense and perception, deny or doubt the progressive intellectual and moral growth of the nation. They cannot trace this growth from day to day; nay, so far as their observation extends, the nation appears to be, if anything, deteriorating. This, it is said or implied, may be gathered from the experience of a single life-time. Whom have we now comparable with the mental giants who lived in the days of our childhood? When did society ever exhibit such signs of rottenness at the core as it now does? The policeman culls his choicest criminals freely from the most favoured classes - nay, even from the elect among them; and Sir Cresswell Cresswell enacting, as it were, the part of Asmodeus, unveils before us almost daily a picture of our domestic morality - a picture of the inner workings of the moral life of society, which is abnormal in the highest degree. These objections are about as pertinent as if a farmer were to deny the progressive development of his crops, or the thickening of the fleeces on his sheep, because he could not mark distinctly from hour to hour, or day to day, the growth of each individual blade of grass or corn, or of every lock of wool; or if, as he advanced in experience and knowledge, and became more apt in distinguishing defects or diseases in his fields and herds, he were to conclude, that therefore these defects and diseases were on the increase; or if, finally, he were to assert that the farming of his childhood and of his forefathers was more rational than the present system. The farmer knows that the splendid beeves which traverse his meadows are not the result of one generation's development; that the crop does not come to maturity coincidently with the tilling of the ground and the scattering of the seed; but that its growth and ripening are matters of time and season. And so of the moral and intellectual growth of nations. This is not a question of a life-time, but of generations. He who thinks that he may mark off the effects of mental culture on a race year by year, is in a state of ignorance as deep, but, truly, not so happy as that of the child whose imagination being warmed by the wondrous adventures of the glorious Jack surnamed of the Beanstalk, throws a bean out of the window when it goes to bed at night, expecting when it rises in the morning to see the plant grown even up to the heavens.
