Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, 1876, Vol. 10 He has, as is well known, studied the inflammatory process by observing the effects of injury on various organs which are suficiently transparent to allow the changes which occur to be viewed by trans mitted light. The ex periment which now goes by his name consists in spreading out the tongue of a curarised frog on a plate of glass, which at the same time supports the animal lying on its belly the glass plate is then fastened to the stage of the microscope and the outspread tongue brought into view. The tongue is then pinched, or irritated in some way, and the efl'ect on the vessels is directly observed. Dr Cohnheim has in this way studied the inflammatory process in the web of the frog's foot, and in the We mesentery. The cornea and the membrane nictitans of the frog and the ear of the rabbit were also observed by him with reflected light. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, Vol. 1: November, 1866 IT is, I feel, no small honour to be called upon to preside over this section which represents the very highest branch of physical science. I say the highest branch of physical science because it has to deal with the highest and hardest of physical problems. The animal frame, which it is our work to investigate, stands at the summit of the great physical cone, with man at the apex, by whom it is, as it were, slung from heaven, in whom the material is worked up to the point of contact with, and made subservient to the purposes of the spiritual. Indeed so complex is the animal organism, so intricate and varied are the questions in physiology, that it is apt to pass out of the range of science, and become too much a matter of speculation and an object of mystery; so that there is some danger of its being degraded by the very difficulties and features which should really place it in the highest position among sciences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, Vol. 62: October Number, 1907 A study of the pulse in the jugular vein has now become established as a routine method of examining disordered hearts - an advance due to the labours of Dr James Mackenzie and of those who have adopted his method.1 With the introduction Of a new clinical method, as is also the case with a new operative procedure, certain structures and relationships assume 'an increased importance and require a fresh description. In this paper I propose to recast our description of the Structures which seem to me to be directly concerned in the production of the venous pulse - my account having reference only to the arrangement as found in the human body. I propose to deal not only with the normal but also with the disordered heart, using for this purpose the series of specimens sent to me for examination by Dr James Mackenzie. These hearts are of special value for the purpose Of study, because Dr Mackenzie had kept accurate records Of their action during many years prior to the death of the patient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Anatomy and Physiology Normal and Pathological, Human and Comparative, 1897, Vol. 31 It is needless to say that this theory has found both adherents and opponents. Among the latter, some maintain that the objects in question are undoubtedly human, others insist that they are as certainly the remains of a large ape. Still another group of critics regard the skull-cap as simian, and the femur as human; averring that the proofs of the remains belonging to one animal are insufficient and inconclusive. For the purpose of bringing forward some additional informa tion which may contribute to the solution of this much-debated problem, I have lately devoted special attention to the study of the femora in various modern races, both savage and civilised.
