Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of American Folk-Lore, 1919, Vol. 18 The Frog Prince is particularly interesting, since it combines, in some of its versions, disenchantment by personal contact with disen chantment by decapitation or by some other method of killing the magical body. In some forms of the great class of animal-spouse tales, the mysterious husband is a man by night and an animal (frog, serpent, wolf, etc.) by day, and lays aside his beast-skin when he assumes human shape.3 This gives us a clear insight into the real meaning of disenchantment by beheading. We shall return to the point later. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of American Folk-Lore, Vol. 17 In those far-away times, Sibu once thought what he could do to break up the seed of our kin, which he kept hidden without avail in a certain place. Then he made a bet with Jaburu, and they agreed that they would throw two cacao pods at each other, and that he should lose in whose hands the pod of cacao would break. And as Sibu did not want to lose again the seed of our kin, and let Jaburu have it, - for that was the stake they were going to play for, he willed that he would choose for himself the green cacao, and give the ripe one to Jaburu. They were to throw four times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In other words, conclusions based on twenty-six separate mythologies quite bear out those based on Eskimo alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of American Folk-Lore, Vol. 14 There are two possible explanations of the different manifesta tions of the mind of man. It may be that the minds of different races show differences of organization; that is to say, the laws of mental activity may not be the same for all minds. But it may also be that the organization of mind is practically identical among all races of man; that mental activity follows the same laws every where, but that its manifestations depend upon the character of individual experience that is subjected to the action of these laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of American Folk-Lore, 1913, Vol. 12 I have heard a tale, but I know not where it originated, of an English gentleman who had spent some time among wild tribes in a foreign land, and on returning to his home wrote a book about them. One chapter was headed Customs and Manners, and consisted simply of these words: Customs, beastly; manners, none. This represents the mental attitude of the average European toward more primitive people. We are apt to regard our own morals and man ners as standards, and to think that those who have them not have none. It is difficult to understand that the virtues of one people may be the crimes of another, and vice versa. Yet such is often the case. We are apt to forget that among ourselves morals may be vastly changed in a single generation, and that what is commendable on the part of the father may be execrated on the part of the son. The history of the duello, for instance, exemplifies this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Although the woman listened attentively, she could not make out what it said. About the same time on the succeeding day the little bird sang again; but this time the woman thought she heard the bird say, Your husband is not dead. He is living with an other woman at the mouth of the river. This same song was repeated on the third morning. Hearing this sad news, the woman felt very bitter towards her husband, and she wept a great deal. She spent the rest of the day in pr sparing food for her children to last them three days, and early next morning set out for the mouth of the river. From the top of every hill she searched diligently for signs of habitation. Towards noon she sighted a but, to which she walked and went in.
