This idea was first conceived when our son Jimmer was born back in 1989. My other son TJ was 7 at the time and when we brought Jimmer home, TJ was intrigued by the cheeks that Jimmer had and commented about them frequently. One day, because TJ knew that I liked to dabble in making different craft items, he said to me “Mommy you should make a doll that looks like Jimmer with his big cheeks, then you can call them “The Cheeksters”. Well at the time I just laughed and said it was a cute idea but didn’t really consider something like that until years later when Jimmer was about 5 or so and he still had those cheeks! I decided to give it a try just for fun because I really enjoyed trying to create things. They first started out as a sock that I stuffed with cotton and drew a face on them. Then I decided that I wanted to put his big feet on them too so then the doll looked like a face with big cheeks and big feet (if you’ve seen Jimmer’s size 14 feet you’ll know why I wanted to add those on to the doll) and of course we used TJ’s idea for a name and called them The Cheeksters. The difference of how they looked back then and how they look now is how far I’ve come at perfecting them just the way I wanted them to look. When we started we thought of 7 different characters. They were Jimmer Jammer, (of course for baby Jimmer), Talented TJ, Lovely Lindsay, Mischievous Michael, Sweet Suzy, Neat Ned, and Rapper Roberto, . When my son TJ was in high school and I had revisited the idea of trying to do something with the Cheeksters, I asked him to write a little poem that went along with each of those. Then we added Messy Marvin, Cool Calvin, Moviestar Monica, Curly Q Carla, and on and on. I probably have about 20 or 30 characters now and the sky is the limit with them. Finally I decided to write a series of books about The Cheeksters. The main character is Jimmer Jammer and the title of the books will be called “The Jimmer Jammer Stories” with stories about the Cheekster characters. The stories will have a moral theme to it with Jimmer Jammer giving some advice to the young readers at the end. My son Jimmer didn’t even know that I was working on these books. He knew of the Cheekster dolls that I had all over the house during his growing years, but didn’t know about the books. I recently showed them to him. He approved and hopes that they do well. So we hope that you and your children enjoy them.

Book excerpt: The ghost of six-year-old Alison Marie Hardy has wandered the property of southern New Mexicos wealthiest pecan farming family for decades, but it is her frequent appearances in the spooky tree tunnel near the village of Pequeno that have made the residents fearful of driving on Highway 28 at night. Little Allison has but one missionto summon the help of terrified bystanders to help her find her father. When she steps in front of Big Joe Silvas pickup truck on a skinny stretch of highway in the dark of night, she sets into motion a chain of events that soon reveals a towns long-held secrets and raises questions as to why the only two people old enough to know the truth about Alison are remaining silent. But Alison refuses to give up as she continues to tease horrified observers and torment the pecan farming family. The reconciliation of Alisons soul depends on the truth that she and her supporters so desperately seekthe same truth that others are so anxious to keep hidden. But before her spirit can be freed and the people of Pequeno can sleep peacefully, Alison must confront the man who betrayed her seventy years earlier.

Book excerpt: What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goal posts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care? In search of answers, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game. A movable feast of Weber grills and Igloo coolers, these are hard-core football fans who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday’s game: The Reeses, who skipped their own daughter’s wedding because it coincided with a Bama game; Ray Pradat, the Episcopal minister who watches the games on a television beside his altar while performing weddings; and John Ed, the wheeling and dealing ticket scalper whose access to good seats gives him power on par with the governor. In no time at all, St. John buys an RV (a $5,500 beater named The Hawg) and joins the caravan for a full football season, chronicling the world of the extreme fan and learning that in the shadow of the stadium, it can all begin to seem strangely normal. Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is not only a hilarious travel story, but a cultural anthropology of fans that goes a long way toward demystifying the universal urge to take sides and to win.

Book excerpt: From the comedy clubs of New York to his big break on "Saturday Night Live" to block-buster films like "Big Daddy" and "Little Nicky" Adam Sandler has left America howling in their seats and peeing in their pants. Sandler has emerged as the decade's most unstoppable comedic-and the ladies love him! But how many people know the story behind this lovable comedic prodigy's ascent to fame? Bill Crawford takes you back to Sandler's childhood in a small New Hampshire Town, where his stand-up routines were always hits with his classmates but not necessarily the teachers! When Adam left his small town to take on the big city at New York University, it wasn't always easy, Sandler performed as a street musician crooning Springsteen songs to commuters, but he was destined to succeed. From his long friendship with then college classmate Tim Herlihy, who went on to co-write all Sandler's movies, to being discovered by Dennis Miller and eventually becoming America's funnyman, Bill Crawford looks behind the headlines and tabloid tales to shed new light on this decade's comedic darling.

Book excerpt: This is one of the most significant military books of the twentieth century. By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War. Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Guderian's book argued, quite clearly, how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the vocoder: how popular music hijacked the Pentagon's speech scrambling weapon The vocoder, invented by Bell Labs in 1928, once guarded phones from eavesdroppers during World War II; by the Vietnam War, it was repurposed as a voice-altering tool for musicians, and is now the ubiquitous voice of popular music. In How to Wreck a Nice Beach—from a mis-hearing of the vocoder-rendered phrase “how to recognize speech”—music journalist Dave Tompkins traces the history of electronic voices from Nazi research labs to Stalin’s gulags, from the 1939 World’s Fair to Hiroshima, from artificial larynges to Auto-Tune. We see the vocoder brush up against FDR, JFK, Stanley Kubrick, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Kraftwerk, the Cylons, Henry Kissinger, and Winston Churchill, who boomed, when vocoderized on V-E Day, “We must go off!” And now vocoder technology is a cell phone standard, allowing a digital replica of your voice to sound human. From T-Mobile to T-Pain, How to Wreck a Nice Beach is a riveting saga of technology and culture, illuminating the work of some of music’s most provocative innovators.
