The dis coveries which he had made during the late ex amination, had indeed gone far to remove his evil suspicions; but he nevertheless could not wholly get rid of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wandering Jew, Vol. 3 of 3 And now, for the third time in five centuries, I reach the summit of one of the hills that overlook the city. And perhaps I again bring with me fear, desolation, and death. Yet this city, intoxicated with the sounds of its joys and its nocturnal revelries, does not know Oh! Does not know that I am at its gates. But no, no! My presence will not be a new calamity. The Lord, in his impenetrable Views, has hitherto led me through France so as to avoid the humblest hamlet; and the sound of the funeral knell has not accompanied my passage. And, moreover, the specter has left me - the green, livid Specter, with its hollow, blood shot eves. When I touched the soil of France, its damp and icy hand was no longer clasped in mine - and it disappeared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews of the United States, 1790-1840, Vol. 3 of 3: A Documentary History It is only fair to say that the eyes of this Society were fixed more on the Jews of Europe than on those of America. It was those European Jews who were already partly convinced of the superiority of the Christian religion who were to be brought to the United States, settled in a segregated colony, and there permitted to work out their economic salvation together with their eternal salvation. There is no suggestion in the literature of the American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews that its leaders intended to devote any attention to their fellow Americans of the Jewish faith. Perhaps, it was their hope that the presence of a group of con verted Jews in this country would lead to the effortless winning of the Jews of America to Christianity. Perhaps the reason was that in the freer cultural climate of the United States they foresaw no difficulty in getting Christian literature into Jewish hands and minds, and therefore saw no need for making special provisions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Jewish History, Vol. 1 of 3 Agrippa held in his hand a roll of papyrus neatly written, which he was extending towards his eldest daughter. Thou wilt deliver it with my blessing to thy brother, beloved, he said, speaking with difficulty; therein is penned all that has occurred to thy father, in a life full Of vicissitude; it may serve as a warning and a lesson to my son in good or evil fortune. Tell him, Berenice, that I have done this, that when my heart is still, my tongue mute, enemies - and the fortunate have always many such - shall not speak falsely of Agrippa. When he reads in this scroll the tale Of my weakness and folly, let him consider, that his father was a man, sub ject to human passions, human foibles. That night, amid the tears of all who knew his virtues, the last monarch Of Judea paid the debt of nature and with him died the last faint ray of independence in Palestine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophically Thinking about World Religions is different from other works in the discipline today. It deviates from the typical approaches used for the study of world religions. Its goal is to engage readers in thinking hard about world religions, not about the data surrounding those traditions. By focusing on philosophical questions, each reader should be challenged to do their own investigations that may reveal the heart of these traditions. Another stance that this project takes that distinguishes it from other texts in the discipline is that it advocates an inclusivist perspective regarding the world religions. Pluralism, which is the predominate assumption today, ends either in contradiction or in the development of a metatheory that dismisses crucial distinctions between the various traditions or eliminates some ancient religions because they do not fit the metatheory. By taking an open inclusivist approach, all religious traditions may engage at the table of dialogue. The final essay is about justice and social affairs. While that discussion is couched within the context of a particular tradition, each religious tradition must have the discussion. But it must be more than an intrareligious dialogue; it must become an interreligious dialogue.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jew and Gentile, Essays on Jewish Apologetics and Kindred Historical Subjects, Vol. 3 The position of the Jewish people is absolutely unique. The Jews are not only found in all lands of civilization and semi-civilization but their position enters conspicuously into all prominent questions of public life. The relation between Church and State, one of the most vital problems of humanity, which dominated the politics of caliphs and czars, which impeded the unification of Italy and cemented the North American colonies into a nation of unparalleled strength, has to a greater or lesser extent always been linked with the Jewish question.
