Book excerpt: UKSC 84 contains the proceedings of the 1984 United Kingdom Simulation Council Conference on Computer Simulation held at the University of Bath, England. The papers describe computer simulation techniques and their applications and cover topics ranging from simulation methodology and software to the various applications of computer simulation in areas such as policy decision-making and planning, biology and medicine, and education. This book is comprised of 52 chapters divided into nine sections and begins by describing an advanced continuous-system simulation language called ESL (ESA Simulation Language), an initiative of the European Space Agency. The papers that follow explore other simulation software, such as MANIP, SYSMOD, COSMOS, Ada, SDL (Simulation Development Language), and SPIRO (Suite of Programs for the Investigation of Recondite Objects). The discussion then turns to a methodology based on artificial intelligence for the design and development of large-scale computer simulations; a formalism for specifying continuous or fixed time-step simulation models that is a straightforward extension of the block-oriented languages, with emphasis on superblocks and tesselations; and simulation of manufacturing and control systems. This book concludes with a chapter that describes a highly efficient compactor for a radar digital database. This monograph will be of interest to students and professionals working in the field of computer simulation.

Book excerpt: Has your need to give your loved one what she needs to be happy been so powerful that it drove you to an obsession that consumed every fiber of your being? It affected your daily living, your emotional state, and your faith. To see the pain in her eyes possesses your heart in such a way as to do whatever it takes to give her peace and show her love, making her dreams come true. The easiest thing for most people to achieve is becoming parents. The miracle is so often taken for granted; those that have no problem with fertility don’t know the pain and stigma that is carried with those who are reproductively challenged. I took a journey that eventually made me bitter, depressed, angry, arrogant, and alone. I prayed prayers that were not answered, until I received messages from God that strengthened my faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide research on ancient glass began in the early 20th century. A consensus has been reached in the community of Archaeology that the first manmade or synthetic glasses, based on archaeological findings, originated in the Middle East during the 5000-3000's BC. By contrast, the manufacturing technology of pottery and ceramics were well developed in ancient China. The earliest pottery and ceramics dates back to the Shang Dynasty - the Zhou Dynasty (1700 BC-770 BC), while the earliest ancient glass artifacts unearthed in China dates back to the Western Han Dynasty. Utilizing the state-of-the art analytical and spectroscopic methods, the recent findings demonstrate that China had already developed its own glassmaking technology at latest since 200 BC. There are two schools of viewpoint on the origin of ancient Chinese glass. The more common one believes that ancient Chinese glass originated from the import of glassmaking technology from the West as a result of Sino-West trade exchanges in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-25 AD). The other scientifically demonstrates that homemade ancient Chinese glass with unique domestic formula containing both PbO and BaO were made as early as in the Pre-Qin Period or even the Warring States Period (770 BC-221 BC), known as Yousha or Faience. This English version of the previously published Chinese book entitled Development History of Ancient Chinese Glass Technology is for universities and research institutes where various research and educational activities of ancient glass and history are conducted. With 18 chapters, the scope of this book covers very detailed information on scientifically based findings of ancient Chinese glass development and imports and influence of foreign glass products as well as influence of the foreign glass manufacturing processes through the trade exchanges along the Silk Road(s).

Well, in this story a fifth grade student called Jade is just like some guys his age who can get into a "slippery" situation when he took an idiom literally. When his mom came home, she told him that it was "raining cats and dogs" so he had to do a "raincheck" on those dogs and cats from the heaven! Which got him into a "slippery" situation but not literally.
