Download or read book The Jacket Or Star-Rover written by Jack London and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Jack London was published under the name of "The Jacket" in the UK and "The Star Rover" in the US. A framing story is told in the first person by Darrell Standing, a university professor serving life imprisonment in San Quentin State Prison for murder. Prison officials try to break his spirit by means of a torture device called "the jacket," a canvas jacket which can be tightly laced so as to compress the whole body, inducing angina. Standing discovers how to withstand the torture by entering a kind of trance state, in which he walks among the stars and experiences portions of past lives. The jacket itself was actually used at San Quentin at the time and Jack London's descriptions of it were based on interviews with a former convict named Ed Morrell, which is also the name of a character in the novel. For his role in the Sontag and Evans gang which robbed the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1890s, Morrell spent fourteen years in California prisons (1894-1908), five of them in solitary confinement. London championed his pardon. After his release, Morrell was a frequent guest at London's Beauty Ranch.
Download or read book Rover written by Andrew Grant and published by Firefly Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, Andrew Grant began photographing dogs, starting with two French bulldogs at an unrelated commercial -shoot-. Then he discovered the sad fact that millions of lost or abandoned dogs enter animal shelters every year. And only a few leave, through rescue and adoption. The rest are euthanized or live out a lonely, caged life. Andrew Grant began to photograph dogs that should be rescued, and dogs that have been rescued. Over 6 years he raised nearly $2 million for shelter dogs through his photographic project. He did this with the sale of four limited-edition books of dog portraits, each called Rover. Each was bigger than the previous, and helped by hundreds of sponsoring dog owners. Those editions are all sold out, and fetch up to $400 on the rare book market -- when available. Most, though, are as treasured as their canine subjects. Now, Firefly Books is publishing a popularly-priced trade edition of Rover: Wagmore Edition. It contains 360 of Andrew Grant's most appealing photographs of dogs. Some are the best friends of lucky owners, and some, sadly, are homeless. All are splendidly realized in sharp, large and very lifelike color portraits. All were captured by state-of-the-art equipment and are truly the most beautiful dog pictures you have ever seen. They feature purebreds of almost every kind, and mixed breeds, too. Each dog's name is on its page. Each is looking intently at the reader. Firefly Books pledges a portion of the revenue from sales of Rover: Wagmore Edition to dog rescue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JACK LONDON is always at his best when there is action, inevitable action to be painted, or the stress of man in the face of such action. And, one of the later novels which is possibly the most striking of all of them and the one which is most different from anything else that Jack London has done before is "The Jacket (The Star Rover)." Here indeed, we find a new field for the man whose feet had hitherto been firmly planted on the earth and whose heart beat in tune with the primitive forces of nature. The subject is not a new one, the story of the man whose soul wandered back over the ages and picked up the threads of former lives, has been done by others. But the sudden spring out of the here-and-now into the realms of pure imagination was an unexpected one for Jack London to take, although it was hinted at in one or two of the later short stories. In bigness of canvas, in epic grandeur of treatment there is something about this book which differentiates it from anything else in the long list of Jack London's works and yet it is somehow a book which might have been foreseen, for all through it there laughs that one quality of riotous joy of living which always will be the memory Jack London's admirers hold longest. With the joy of living crushed out of him by a straight-jacket in the prison, the one-time professor's brain went soaring through the past and there resumed the glorious battle for existence that was denied him by man's cruelty in his present state. The book is a strong arraignment of prison conditions, too, but not for that will it be remembered.

I trod interstellar space, exalted by the knowledge that I was bound on vast adventure, where, at the end, I would find all the cosmic formulae and have made clear to me the ultimate secret of the universe. In my hand I carried a long glass wand. It was borne in upon me that with the tip of this wand I must touch each star in passing. And I knew, in all absoluteness, that did I but miss one star I should be precipitated into some unplummeted abyss of unthinkable and eternal punishment and guilt.
