Book excerpt: A book on the contribution of the island of Krk and its inhabitants to the Croatian War of Independence. Although the title of the book may give the impression that it has a local character, the truth is exactly the opposite--the book describes the backdrop of the events that occurred on the territory of the former Yugoslavia at the end of the previous century, told through the prism of the participation of the island of Krk and its inhabitants in the Croatian uprising with the aim of defending and establishing the independent Republic of Croatia. The contents of this book respect all of the historical circumstances that preceded the Croatian War of Independence. The events of the 1990s stem from the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, when the Great Serbian hegemony (which had been visible even earlier) began, up until the end of the Croatian War of Independence. Since each region has its own specificities, it was necessary to describe how the people of Krk fought different forms of Fascist ideology no less than three times in the previous century. Linking the Croatian War of Independence with anti-fascism was truly courageous, and it represents a rarity in the contemporary Croatian historiography. In a similar vein, the descriptions of religious and humanitarian activities of religious communities present on the island at the time, apart from the Catholic Church, which has been present on the island since the Late Antiquity, the descriptions of the Islamic Community, Evangelical Church, Seventh-day Adventist Church and Jehovah's Witnesses constitute the first written texts on those communities on the island. This book is truly different from other books about the Croatian War of Independence, and it describes many of the hitherto unexplored areas. The book was written under the auspices of the highest scientific institution in the Republic of Croatia--the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. All this guarantees the highest scientific, professional and moral approach to the subject matter. In the 2014 literary and journalism contest for the best book on the subject of the Croatian War of Independence, the book received special mention by the jury and won the second prize. It should be pointed out that the book has already found its place in highly respectable and world- famous libraries of educational and cultural institutions, such as Harvard University, Library of Congress, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, British Library, University College London and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

With this long-awaited book, Ivo Banac becomes the first scholar to assess the domestic consequences of Yugoslavia's expulsion from the Cominform, and his findings will radically revise some of our most basic assumptions about Tito's revolution. Banac's subject is the nature and fate of those elements in the Yugoslav Communist party who were said to have sided with Moscow against their own country's leadership. He demonstrates that the so-called Cominformists represented as much as twenty-percent of the party membership and had widely divergent aims. He then reconstructs the history of the labrynthine factional struggles that preceded and accompanied the 1948 split and shows that, as always, the national question played the dominant role in Yugoslav politics. Book excerpt: Mitja Velikonja has written a comprehensive survey that examines how religion has interacted with other aspects of Bosnia-Herzegovina's history. Velikonja sees the former Ottoman borderland as a distinct cultural and religious entity where three major faiths -- Islam, Catholicism, and Orthodoxy -- managed to coexist in relative peace. It is only during the past century that competing nationalisms have led to persecution, ethnic cleansing, and mass murder. Emphasizing the importance of religion to nationalism as a symbol of collective identity that strengthens national identity, Velikonja notes that religious groups have a tendency to become isolated from one another. He believes Bosnia-Herzegovina was unique in its sarlikost, or diversity, because while religion defined ethnic communities there and kept them separate, it did not create a culture of intolerance. Rather than suppressing one another, the region's ethno-religious groups learned to cooperate and mediate their differences -- useful behavior in an area that served as buffer between East and West for most of its history. Velikonja believes that Bosnians went beyond tolerance to embrace synthetic, eclectic religious norms, with each religious group often borrowing customs and rituals from its rivals. Rather than the extreme orthodoxy evident elsewhere in Europe, Bosnia became the home of heterodoxy. Sadly, nationalism changed all that, and the area became the scene of systematic persecution, forced conversion, and mass slaughter. Velikonja considers the misfortunes suffered by the Bosnians during the 1990s as largely the result of actions by their neighbors and local militants and inaction by the international community.But he also sees the tragedy that unfolded as the result of the exploitation of ethno-religious differences and myths by Serbian chauvinists and Croatian nationalists. Julia Verkholantsev locates the roots of this belief among the Latin clergy in Dalmatia in the 13th century and describes in fascinating detail how Slavic leaders subsequently appropriated it to further their own political agendas.
