Book excerpt: "The Iron Heel" is a dystopian novel by Jack London, thought by some to be one of the earliest examples in the genre. Set in the United States, it deals with possible future changes in social and political terms. It is a prophetic tale, warning against the horrors of authoritarian power, awaiting classics like "1984" and "Brave New World". It is also a story of love, sacrifice, and downfall. The exploration of the class system with all its inequalities and inadequacies turn the novel into a rather political read, perfect for fans of social science fiction and dystopian literature in general. Jack London (1876-1916) was an American writer and social activist. He grew up in the working class, but became a worldwide celebrity and one of the highest paid authors of his time. He wrote several novels, which are considered classics today, among these 'Call of the Wild', 'Sea Wolf' and 'White Fang'.

Book excerpt: The Iron Heel is a dystopian novel by American writer Jack London, first published in 1908.Generally considered to be the earliest of the modern Dystopian, it chronicles the rise of an oligarchic tyranny in the United States. It is arguably the novel in which Jack London's socialist views are most explicitly on display. A forerunner of soft science fiction novels and stories of the 1960s and 1970s, the book stresses future changes in society and politics while paying much less attention to technological changes

Book excerpt: Jack London's The Iron Heel tells the story of an oligarchic tyrant's rise in the United States. First published in 1908, the book created great controversy for the author as many were upset by his socialist views being on display throughout the volume. An unusual novel for London's canon and the time period in general, the novel features a first-person narrative of a woman protagonist, suggests socialist methods for social reform, and is one of the frontrunners of soft science fiction texts. Telling the story of Avis Everhard and her husband, Ernest, the novel follows the rise of the "Iron Heel" oligarchy in America from 1912 to 1932. During this time, Japan conquered East Asia and created its own empire, India gained independence, and Europe became largely socialist. The Iron Heel builds a utopia-like city named Asgard. Avis and Ernest, along with other rebels in the Brotherhood of Man, revolt against the government and wreak havoc on Asgard multiple times, but to no avail. After the deaths of Avis and Ernest, another narrator, Anthony Meredith, concludes the novel by informing readers that the Iron Heel remained in power for another three centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Iron Heel" is Jack London's 1908 dsytopian novel about the rise of oligarchic tyranny in the United States. Playing upon the socialistic themes that were so prevalent at the beginning of the 20th century, "The Iron Heel" tells the story of a wealthy class that squeezes out the middle class and effectively rules for three centuries until a revolution ushers in the "Brotherhood of Man". As important a commentary today as when it was first written, London's novel is a chilling depiction of a possible future world and an excellent exposition on the struggle between socio-economic classes.

Book excerpt: A GAME OF THRONES How would you like to read A Game of Thrones with a PhD by your side?Steven Attewell, creator of Race for the Iron Throne (racefortheironthrone.wordpress.com), is one of the most insightful scholars in political theory and history, but instead of devoting his talents to academia, he's delving into George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga to give the most comprehensive deconstruction - and explanation - yet offered. Each one of Thrones's 73 chapters is broken down in meticulous detail in four key areas. The Political and Historical Analyses explore the political ramifications that each character's decisions entail while digging into the real-world historical incidents that inspired Martin's narrative twists and turns. What If? offers up a tantalizing look at how these political and historical elements could have played out in dozens of alternative scenarios, underscoring the majesty and complexity of Martin's storytelling. And Book vs. Show looks at the key differences - both good and bad - between the story as originally conceived on the printed page and as realized in HBO's Game of Thrones. At nearly 204,000 words, it's almost literally impossible to imagine a more exhaustive or authoritative reading companion for any novel ever before published.Note: there are spoilers for all five published novels in the Song of Ice and Fire series. About the author Steven Attewell is the author of Race for the Iron Throne, a blog that examines the history and politics of the Song of Ice and Fire series and HBO's Game of Thrones. He has a PhD in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studied the history of public policy and was a political and union activist. In addition to Race for the Iron Throne, Steven is also a co-podcaster on Game of Thrones at the Lawyers, Guns, and Money podcast, writes about public policy at the Realignment Project, and is a co-author of the Tower of the Hand: A Hymn for Spring anthology book.

Book excerpt: ‘To Build a Fire’ is one of Jack London’s (‘White Fang, ‘The Call of the Wild’) most cherished short stories. Drawn from London’s personal experiences, we follow an unnamed narrator taking his first steps into the untamed wilds of the Yukon. With only a native dog as his companion, our protagonist must contest with the hostile climate of the Yukon, as he surges ahead on a journey against nature that will shake him to his very core. ‘To Build a Fire’ challenges readers to consider what survival means to them, and the lengths they would go to carry on in the most unforgiving territory in the world. Fans of London’s previous works will be enthralled with this story of man versus nature. Jack London (1876 – 1916) was an American journalist, social activist, and author of over 20 novels. From a working-class upbringing, London became one of the highest-paid authors of his time and a world-renowned celebrity. He is best remembered for his classic novels ‘The Call of the Wild’ (1903) and ‘White Fang’ (1906), and his short stories including ‘To Build a Fire’ (1902) and ‘An Odyssey of the North' (1900). Several of his works have found homes on the silver screen such as ‘The Call of the Wild’, which was recently adapted into a live-action film with ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ star Harrison Ford.

Orwell was a great admirer of the American novelist and credited him with prophesying the rise of Fascism. Frederic Tuten also used "The Iron Heel" as inspiration; he quotes extensively from it in his novel "The Adventures of Mao on the Long March".
