Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Investors' Review, Vol. 30: July 6 to Dec. 28, 1907 Metropolitan District 4 per Cent. Rent Charge Stock. - This stock is also now very much reduced in price. It has been as high as and is now at or very near the lowest figure ever touched. As the interest is guaranteed by the Midland Railway, which pays a rent sufficient to give the stock 4 per cent., it is an investment that stands altogether clear of the fate and fortunes of the District Railway itself. London and India Docks C Debenture Stock. There is about ordinary and preference stocks behind this debenture issue, but it is a non' cumulative stock, or at any rate holders cannot claim back dividends unless a surplus remain after paying interest on all the debenture stocks of the company, as well as the dividends on the A and B preference stocks. There is thus a risk in it, but not a great risk, and we think the stock cheap at the price given. Gold Coast 35 per Cent. Inscribed Stock at 84 seems also an excellent investment, although the stock has no other security than the revenues of the colony. These, however, are growing, and the railway is obtaining a considerable and increasing traffic, so that the security should be ample. It is only the present state of markets which keeps the price down. It was issued at 91 in March, 1902, and is a trustee stock. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over seven years, 45 of the world's top investors were given between $25 and $150m to invest by fund manager Lee Freeman-Shor. His instructions were simple. There was only one rule. They could only invest in their ten best ideas to make money. It seemed like a foolproof plan to make a lot of money. What could possibly go wrong? These were some of the greatest minds at work in the markets today - from top European hedge fund managers to Wall Street legends. But most of the investors' great ideas actually lost money. Shockingly, a toss of a coin would have been a better method of choosing whether or not to invest in a stock. Nevertheless, despite being wrong most of the time, many of these investors still ended up making a lot of money. How could they be wrong most of the time and still be profitable? The answer lay in their hidden habits of execution, which until now have only been guessed at from the outside world. This book lays bare those secret habits for the first time, explaining them with real-life data, case studies and stories taken from Freeman-Shor's unique position of managing these investors on a day-to-day basis. A riveting read for investors of every level, this book shows you exactly what to do and what not to do when your big idea is losing or winning - and demonstrates conclusively why the most important thing about investing is always the art of execution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Investors' Review, Vol. 12: July 8 to December 30, 1898 It is astonishing to find wha't' weighty questions in regard to companies are solved by reference to Somerset House. We have been busy once again upon those interesting archives, dry as. Dust to those who merely deal with them in a cursory manner, but teeming with information to those who can gauge the importance of the facts. Often a mere glance at a share list tells the tale that the issue, however loudly it was boasted of in public as a success, disappointed its promoters, leaving large blocks of shares upon their hands to be sold as opportunity could be created - cautiously at first, but if caution would not do, then persistently and with fevered energy, so that the time of harvest might not be lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is that rarity, a useful book."--Warren Buffett Howard Marks, the chairman and cofounder of Oaktree Capital Management, is renowned for his insightful assessments of market opportunity and risk. After four decades spent ascending to the top of the investment management profession, he is today sought out by the world's leading value investors, and his client memos brim with insightful commentary and a time-tested, fundamental philosophy. Now for the first time, all readers can benefit from Marks's wisdom, concentrated into a single volume that speaks to both the amateur and seasoned investor. Informed by a lifetime of experience and study, The Most Important Thing explains the keys to successful investment and the pitfalls that can destroy capital or ruin a career. Utilizing passages from his memos to illustrate his ideas, Marks teaches by example, detailing the development of an investment philosophy that fully acknowledges the complexities of investing and the perils of the financial world. Brilliantly applying insight to today's volatile markets, Marks offers a volume that is part memoir, part creed, with a number of broad takeaways. Marks expounds on such concepts as "second-level thinking," the price/value relationship, patient opportunism, and defensive investing. Frankly and honestly assessing his own decisions--and occasional missteps--he provides valuable lessons for critical thinking, risk assessment, and investment strategy. Encouraging investors to be "contrarian," Marks wisely judges market cycles and achieves returns through aggressive yet measured action. Which element is the most essential? Successful investing requires thoughtful attention to many separate aspects, and each of Marks's subjects proves to be the most important thing.

Book excerpt: Diversification provides a well-known way of getting something close to a free lunch: by spreading money across different kinds of investments, investors can earn the same return with lower risk (or a much higher return for the same amount of risk). This strategy, introduced nearly fifty years ago, led to such strategies as index funds. What if we were all missing out on another free lunch that’s right under our noses? InLifecycle Investing, Barry Nalebuff and Ian Ayres-two of the most innovative thinkers in business, law, and economics-have developed tools that will allow nearly any investor to diversify their portfolios over time. By using leveraging when young-a controversial idea that sparked hate mail when the authors first floated it in the pages ofForbes-investors of all stripes, from those just starting to plan to those getting ready to retire, can substantially reduce overall risk while improving their returns. InLifecycle Investing, readers will learn How to figure out the level of exposure and leverage that’s right foryou How the Lifecycle Investing strategy would have performed in the historical market Why it will work even if everyone does it Whennotto adopt the Lifecycle Investing strategy Clearly written and backed by rigorous research,Lifecycle Investingpresents a simple but radical idea that will shake up how we think about retirement investing even as it provides a healthier nest egg in a nicely feathered nest.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Investors' Review, Vol. 14: Weekly Issue; July 8 to December 30, 1899 The volume containing the analysis of our trade with foreign countries and British possessions issued each year has now reached very substantial proportions, thanks to the gradual expansion of the items set forth in detail. It gives us our trade with each country. And with each British dependency in abstract and in detail, so that one is able to see at a glance how business has fared in any part of the world for the British merchant and manufacturer. A mine of information, in short, is contained within the thousand pages to which this volume now extends. At present we shall only mention a fact or two. The figures are for the five years ending 1898, and they show that comparing the first year of the five with the last, our imports from foreign countries have risen about 18 per cent., and our exports thereto rather more than 41; per cent. With our colonial possessions of all descriptions our trade has not grown in the same way. Imports therefrom have risen less than 65 per cent., but exports thereto have increased almost 14 per cent. We do not draw any sweeping deduction from a generalised statement of this sort, but it certainly does not indicate that trade follows the flag. In volume our colonial imports, including India and Burmah, amounted to about £94, ooo, ooo in 1894, against less than £99,5oo, ooo in 1898, but our exports to the same places rose from £78,6oo, ooo to With foreign countries we did a far larger business.
