This book was released on 1988 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To study the effects of microstructures on crack propagation in titanium and titanium alloys was the prime objective of this project. The initial phase consisted of producing and characterizing microstructures in Ti-8Mn and in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al. Other preliminary work was concerned with a determination of void initiation sites in C.P. titanium. The discovery that fracture surfaces exhibited limited areas with unusual dimple features, interpreted to have been caused by high temperatures, led to research on the temperature rise of moving crack tips. Experimentally, this entailed mechanical measurements using strain rates, the determination of stress intensity rates, straining in vacuum, measurement of fracture topographies by stereophotogrammetry, and the recording of light emission during fracture. Keywords: Polycrystalline titanium, Titanium alloys, Manganese alloys, Iron, Aluminum. (jes).

Book excerpt: Given their growing importance in the aerospace, automotive, sports and medical sectors, modelling the microstructure and properties of titanium and its alloys is a vital part of research into the development of new applications. This is the first time a book has been dedicated to modelling techniques for titanium.Part one discusses experimental techniques such as microscopy, synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Part two reviews physical modelling methods including thermodynamic modelling, the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami method, finite element modelling, the phase-field method, the cellular automata method, crystallographic and fracture behaviour of titanium aluminide and atomistic simulations of interfaces and dislocations relevant to TiAl. Part three covers neural network models and Part four examines surface engineering products. These include surface nitriding: phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, morphology and corrosion; nitriding: modelling of hardness profiles and kinetics; and aluminising: fabrication of Ti coatings by mechanical alloying. With its distinguished authors, Titanium alloys: Modelling of microstructure, properties and applications is a standard reference for industry and researchers concerned with titanium modelling, as well as users of titanium, titanium alloys and titanium aluminide in the aerospace, automotive, sports and medical implant sectors. Comprehensively assesses modelling techniques for titanium, including experimental techniques such as microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry Reviews physical modelling methods including thermodynamic modelling and finite element modelling Examines surface engineering products with specific chapters focused on surface nitriding and aluminising

Book Synopsis Determination of Feasibility of Applying Computer Analysis of Titanium Alloy Microstructures to Quality Control by : A. Dekaney
Download or read book Determination of Feasibility of Applying Computer Analysis of Titanium Alloy Microstructures to Quality Control written by A. Dekaney and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two types of microstructure samples were examined for the Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo titanium alloy under consideration. These included normal preparation of specimens and nondestructive preparation through electropolishing and replication. In total, 53 photomicrographs of alloy specimens were entered into a digital data base through digitization by the high-speed scanning device selected and purchased during the effort. The specimens were computer analyzed to establish geometric properties of primary alpha and secondary alpha particles. The 26 geometric properties were correlated with 11 mechanical properties and five heat treatment and chemical composition properties. The success in predicting ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, percent of elongation, percent reduction in area, fracture toughness, fatigue cycles to pinpoint crack indication and cycles to 1/32 inch crack for three test specimens indicates a promising future for the application of digital techniques to titanium alloy quality control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specimens of beta titanium alloy, Ti-15-3, were heat treated to different strength levels by single-stage and multi-stage ageing, and hardness, tensile and fracture properties were determined to identify heat treatments well suited for structural applications. These studies were supplemented by microstructural analysis. Attractive combinations of strength and fracture toughness were obtained at medium to high strength levels. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties is discussed.

Book Synopsis Correlation of Two Fracture Toughness Tests for Titanium and Ferrous Alloys by : Charles N. Freed
Download or read book Correlation of Two Fracture Toughness Tests for Titanium and Ferrous Alloys written by Charles N. Freed and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-strength ferrous and titanium alloys are of interest for use in complex structures; a knowledge of the notch fracture toughness of these alloys is necessary to preclude catastrophic failure. A previously established relationship between the dynamic tear test energy and the explosion tear test performance provides reliable fracture-toughness information of those alloys characterized by a toughness level requiring plastic deformation to propagate fracture. This analysis has not been extended to the ultrahigh-strength alloys in which fracture can propagate castastrophically at elastic stress levels. For these alloys, the analytical methods of linear elastic fracture mechanics provide the required elastic stress level and flaw-size relationship for fracture. This report deals with a 'marriage' of the two approaches-the engineering and the analytical-by correlative techniques. (Author).
