Book excerpt: Abū Ma'shar's famous Great Introduction to traditional astrology was a major influence on medieval astrologers through its Latin versions, and is available and explained to modern audiences in this new translation from the Arabic original. Written in the early 800s during the Golden Age of the 'Abbāsid Caliphate in Baghdad, the Great Introduction falls into two parts. Books I-IV present a theory of astrology and its primary concepts in the language of Aristotelian philosophy, including a lengthy defense of astrology. Books V-VIII contain numerous lists and descriptions of sign categories, planetary conditions, and planetary configurations. Book VII describes how to judge elemental combinations in planetary conjunctions, and Book VIII contains Abū Ma'shar's classic list of Lots and how to interpret them. The Great Introduction is a landmark in astrological history, and is a must-have for practitioners and historians.

An introductory, historically oriented chapter provides a way of viewing the overall structure of the field, its recent trends, and its possible directions. Subsequent sections present significant recent papers by prominent researchers, organized to reveal the currents, connections, and controversies that animate the field. Current trends in the field are illustrated with papers from ongoing streams of research. The papers on "connections" explore memory, explanation and argument, affect, attitudes, and motivation. Finally, a section on "controversies" presents problem representation, domain knowledge, content specificity, rule-governed versus rule-described behavior, and proposals for radical departures and new beginnings in the field. Students and researchers in psychology who have an interest in cognitive processes will find this text to be rewarding reading.

In Theory and Reality, Peter Godfrey-Smith addresses these questions by taking the reader on a grand tour of more than a hundred years of debate about science. The result is a completely accessible introduction to the main themes of the philosophy of science. Examples and asides engage the beginning student, a glossary of terms explains key concepts, and suggestions for further reading are included at the end of each chapter. Like no other text in this field, Theory and Reality combines a survey of recent history of the philosophy of science with current key debates that any beginning scholar or critical reader can follow. The second edition is thoroughly updated and expanded by the author with a new chapter on truth, simplicity, and models in science.

Sometimes called a "shorter Bonatti," Leopold discusses traditional astronomy, basic interpretive principles, Lots or "Arabic Parts," natal astrology, questions or horary, mundane topics such as weather and wars, elections, and even material on using astrological talismans. This book was translated and edited by Benjamin Dykes, whose long experience with the source texts makes Leopold's text more readable and understandable, correcting many errors committed by the medieval editors and typesetters. With numerous special Comments, tables, and diagrams added by Dykes in addition to Leopold's own images, the Compilation is a handy resource for students and experts in medieval Western astrology.

Part 1 enumerates many methods of traditional weather prediction, including Lots and lunar mansions. Part 2 focuses on prices and commodities, predicting market fluctuations and supply and demand. Part 3 discusses the interpretation of eclipses and comets. Part 4 is an extensive look at chorography (assigning signs and planets to regions of the earth), including a complete discussion of climes and a guide to obscure place-names. Throughout, Dr. Benjamin Dykes provides commentary and extensive introductions to the astrology of Ptolemy, which is the basis of most of these techniques. It is a must-have for traditional astrologers and historians of astrology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1143 Robert of Ketton produced the first Latin translation of the Qur’an. This translation, extant in 24 manuscripts, was one of the main ways in which Latin European readers had access to the Muslim holy book. Yet it was not the only means of transmission of Quranic stories and concepts to the Latin world: there were other medieval translations into Latin of the Qur’an and of Christian polemical texts composed in Arabic which transmitted elements of the Qur’an (often in a polemical mode). The essays in this volume examine the range of medieval Latin transmission of the Qur’an and reaction to the Qur’an by concentrating on the manuscript traditions of medieval Qur’an translations and anti-Islamic polemics in Latin. We see how the Arabic text was transmitted and studied in Medieval Europe. We examine the strategies of translators who struggled to find a proper vocabulary and syntax to render Quranic terms into Latin, at times showing miscomprehensions of the text or willful distortions for polemical purposes. These translations and interpretations by Latin authors working primarily in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Spain were the main sources of information about Islam for European scholars until well into the sixteenth century, when they were printed, reused and commented. This volume presents a key assessment of a crucial chapter in European understandings of Islam.
