Book excerpt: This book studies the theory, practice and evaluation methods of international development cooperation, aid and assistance management in detail from a global perspective. It attempts to answer the following questions: How effective are the current Western aid methods? How should China optimize current international development cooperation? How to effectively design an aid management system in the international community? How to assess the effectiveness of aid?The book contributes to studies in international development cooperation. The theoretical part analyzes the main concepts, viewpoints, theories, and disputes in current international development cooperation, primarily focusing on the differences in concepts between traditional development donors and emerging donors represented by China. The practical part studies the roles and importance of different subjects in international development assistance. This part also explores the impact of different aid management institutions on international development cooperation. The evaluation part reviews the current mainstream methods of international development assessment and uses non-experimental methods of impact evaluation and randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on biodiversity, hereafter called Biodiversity TAG, is composed of 25 international experts in ecology, biodiversity indicators, agronomy, life cycle assessment, livestock production systems, and environmental science. Their backgrounds, complementary between systems and regions, allowed them to understand and address different perspectives. The aim of the methodology developed in these guidelines is to introduce a harmonized international approach for assessing the impacts of livestock on biodiversity. The livestock sector is a major user of natural resources (land in particular) and an important contributor to pollution (e.g. causing nutrient losses, increasing greenhouse gas emissions), which makes it one of the sectors with the highest impact on biodiversity. At the same time, livestock production is one of the few sectors with not only negative but also positive impacts on biodiversity; therefore, the sector can pull two levers to improve its biodiversity performance – mitigate harm and maximize benefits. Many environmental assessments of the livestock sector have not addressed biodiversity because of its intrinsic complexity. These guidelines strive to include biodiversity in environmental assessments, in order to increase the understanding of the impacts of livestock on biodiversity and to reveal possible synergies or trade-offs with other environmental criteria or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Several indicators in these guidelines are also of relevance for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floods can have a devastating impact on life, property and economic resources. However, the systematic collection of damage data in the aftermath of flood events can contribute to future risk mitigation. Such data can support a variety of actions including the identification of priorities for intervention during emergencies, the creation of complete event scenarios to tailor risk mitigation strategies, the definition of victim compensation schemes, and the validation of damage models to feed cost-benefit analysis of mitigation actions. Volume highlights include: • Compilation of real world case studies elaborating on the survey experiences and best practices associated with flood damage data collection, storage and analysis, that can help strategize flood risk mitigation in an efficient manner • Coverage of different flooding phenomena such as riverine and mountain floods, spatial analysis from local to global scales, and stakeholder perspectives, e.g. public decision makers, researchers, private companies • Contributions from leading experts in the field, researchers and practitioners, including civil protection actors working at different spatial and administrative level, insurers, and professionals working in the field of natural hazard risks mitigation Flood Damage Survey and Assessment: New Insights from Research and Practice will be a valuable resource for earth scientists, hydrologists, meteorologists, geologists, geographers, civil engineers, insurers, policy makers, and planners. Book excerpt: Today we hear more and more often about data protection: but what does it mean? The “protection” concerns natural persons and therefore, their data. The book takes us on a journey through the legislation on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data provided for by the eu Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR), helping us to understand its historical evolution, the ethical and legal principles that guide it and the obligations related to the processing. We should not overlook the issue of information security, also given the most current methods of communication and the development of new tools that offer us connection possibilities through smartphones, e-mail and social networks, however, posing severe risks, especially for minors. The new technological frontiers (Blockchain, IoT, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Drones, Robotics) deserve attention mainly because of the impact on the natural persons and their data; adequate awareness is increasingly necessary also for a correct ethical approach to the issue. The book presents a new and innovative approach to data protection according to the relational model, which we defined DAPPREMO (acronym of Data Protection and Privacy Relationships Model) based on high mathematics as a function of reality analysis.

Environmental Data Analysis is created to provide modern quantitative tools and techniques designed specifically to meet the needs of environmental sciences and related fields. This book has an impressive coverage of the scope. Main techniques described in this book are models for linear and nonlinear environmental systems, statistical & numerical methods, data envelopment analysis, risk assessments and life cycle assessments. These state-of-the-art techniques have attracted significant attention over the past decades in environmental monitoring, modeling and decision making. Environmental Data Analysis explains carefully various data analysis procedures and techniques in a clear, concise, and straightforward language and is written in a self-contained way that is accessible to researchers and advanced students in science and engineering. This is an excellent reference for scientists and engineers who wish to analyze, interpret and model data from various sources, and is also an ideal graduate-level textbook for courses in environmental sciences and related fields. Book excerpt: The terminal evaluation serves a double purpose of (i) providing evidence on project performance (delivery of results) for accountability and transparency purposes, and (ii) promoting learning and knowledge sharing within FAO and GEF and among the global and national partners to strengthen the institutional and technical capacities of countries to meet the ETF requirements of the Paris Agreement. The evaluation used a combination of methods to gather information: document review, semi-structured interviews of pilot country representatives, other key stakeholders and CBIT-Forest Partners, and project management and Project Steering Committee members, as well as a brief survey targeted at pilot country partners. The evaluation used interviews and surveys to provide evidence on project performance, with particular emphasis on assessing the achievement of outcomes and impacts, value-added and benefits provided through participation in the CBIT-Forest project, sustainability, general value-added and lessons learned.
