This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical site infections are caused by bacteria that get in through incisions made during surgery. They threaten the lives of millions of patients each year and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. In low- and middle-income countries, 11% of patients who undergo surgery are infected in the process. In Africa, up to 20% of women who have a caesarean section contract a wound infection, compromising their own health and their ability to care for their babies. But surgical site infections are not just a problem for poor countries. In the United States, they contribute to patients spending more than 400 000 extra days in hospital at a cost of an additional US $10 billion per year. No international evidence-based guidelines had previously been available before WHO launched its global guidelines on the prevention of surgical site infection on 3 November 2016, and there are inconsistencies in the interpretation of evidence and recommendations in existing national guidelines. These new WHO guidelines are valid for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.

Book excerpt: The procedure of skin grafting has been performed since 3000BC and with the aid of modern technology has evolved through the years. While the development of new techniques and devices has significantly improved the functional as well as the aesthetic results from skin grafting, the fundamentals of skin grafting have remained the same, a healthy vascular granulating wound bed free of infection. Adherence to the recipient bed is the most important factor in skin graft survival and research continues introducing new techniques that promote this process. Biological and synthetic skin substitutes have also provided better treatment options as well as HLA tissue typing and the use of growth factors. Even today, skin grafts remain the most common and least invasive procedure for the closure of soft tissue defects but the quest for perfection continues.

Be careful about mesh used in hernia surgery. It is a simple piece of synthetic cloth !!!NEWS IN TIMES OF INDIA Pune surgeon's hernia work lauded at world conference, T NN | Ma y 2 2 , 2 0 1 5 , 0 6 . 2 7 PM IS T PUNE: City-based senior surgeon and hernia expert Mohan Desarda was invited faculty and guest speaker at the first World Hernia Conference which was held at Milan in Italy last month. The invited experts demonstrate their work to surgeons from all over the world so that they can carry this knowledge to their country for the benefit of society at large," said Desarda who has done basic invention in the hernia disease. Desarda challenged the old concepts that cough or weight lifting causes hernia and established that hernia occurs only because of a defect in the muscle. Desarda also developed a new operation technique of muscle transfer to close this defect. The technique is now included in the medical text books of international repute. "In traditional operations done today, surgeons stitch a mesh by open or laproscopic surgery. Mesh being a foreign body has many inherent disadvantages and complications. And these complications are much more serious in laparoscopic surgery because mesh is stitched inside the abdomen. Desarda did not register patent of this technique so that any surgeon can use this freely for the benefit of their patients. Patient can bend, squat, climb up the staircase, carry luggage and travel or go to office within couple of days after surgery. Please circulate this message to your friends and groups in the interest of general public. I have no personal interest involved in this.

Book excerpt: This textbook describes the basic principles of induced organ regeneration in skin and peripheral nerves and extends the original successful paradigm to other organs. A set of trans-organ rules is established and its use in regeneration of several organs is illustrated from the works of several independent investigators who worked with a variety of organs, such as the lung, the bladder, and the Achilles tendon, using collagen-based scaffolds somewhat similar to the original one. These critical medical treatments fill the clinical need that is not met by organ transplantation. New to this second edition: New information extending the paradigm of tissue regeneration from organ regeneration in skin and peripheral nerves to other organs Guidelines, known as trans-organ rules, are described for the first time for extending this unique medical treatment to organs of several medical specialties The work serves as a comprehensive text and reference for students and practitioners of tissue engineering

Book excerpt: Obesity represents one of the major global health challenges of the 21st century. Its occurrence has now reached epidemic proportions, not only in industrialized nations, but increasingly in less developed countries too. Written by world-leading specialists in public health nutrition, Globesity cuts straight to the underlying nature and causes of this devastating trend. It shows that the causes of obesity are primarily socio-economic and the result of a distorted agricultural and food production and supply system. To address this problem, we must learn how to better manage the physical, social and economic environment rather than simply focusing on individual lifestyle choices. The authors draw startling parallels between the obesity crisis and climate change, both of which are characterized by the over-consumption of increasingly scarce resources and require radical, urgent and sustainable solutions. The authors argue that if we are to deal with the twin crises of our climate and our waistlines, action must be taken now. Drawing on a wide range of sources and disciplines, including anthropology, economics, sociology, epidemiology, medicine and nutrition, Globesity provides a vital treatment of the issues for general readers, health professionals, policy-makers and students alike.
