Book excerpt: Causal attributions can play an integral part in how employees respond to events in the work environment (Bowling and Beehr, 2006; Dasborough and Ashkanasy, 2002; Perrewé and Zellars, 1999). Causal attributions of a work behavior or event include locus of causality (i.e., self-directed, supervisor-directed, organization-directed), stability, and intentionality (i.e., altruistic, self-serving). In the current study, I examined the consequences of subordinates' causal attributions on responses to emotional and instrumental supervisor support. As expected, emotional and instrumental supervisor support were positively associated with job satisfaction, supervisor satisfaction, organizational citizenship behaviors, and organizational commitment assessed 30 days later. Emotional supervisor support also had a weak positive relationship with physical health, whereas instrumental supervisor support was unrelated to physical health. Several causal attributions were found to moderate the relationships between supervisor support and positive criteria, but the moderating effects varied depending upon the type of supervisor support provided, the causal attribution, and the criteria being predicted. Overall, the moderating effects of causal attributions were most common when pertaining to emotional supervisor support and predicting either job satisfaction or supervisor satisfaction. Implications of the current study include, but not limited to, an emphasis on training supervisor's to provide emotional support that is perceived as stable and altruistic. In addition, future researchers should further examine the effects of attributions on criteria that pertain to an employee's self concept.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study explores the roles of subordinates' individual differences in predicting their perceptions of abusive supervision. Supervisor behavior was controlled via a video vignette to assess if subjects perceived the same supervisor behavior differently. A sample of 756 working adults revealed that subjects' hostile attribution styles, negative affectivity, entitlement, trait anger, and external locus of control directly predicted perceptions of abusive supervision while self-efficacy and internal locus of control did not. Attributions for performance failures mediated the relationships between hostile attribution style, self-efficacy, entitlement, external and internal locus of control and perceptions of abusive supervision. These results extend abusive supervision research by controlling for differences in supervisory behavior and demonstrating that individual differences influence subjects' perceptions of abuse. Attribution research is extended by demonstrating that hostile attribution styles predict attributions and that attributions mediate the effects of individual differences in perceptions of abuse.

Book excerpt: This book argues that conventional interpretations of Freudian psychology have not accounted for the existence and complexity of death anxiety and its intrinsic relation to the creation of illusions and delusions. This book contends that there is sufficient evidence to support the view that death anxiety is not only a symptom of certain modes of psychopathology, but is a very normal and central emotional threat human beings deal with only by impeding awareness of the threat from entering consciousness. The immanence of the fear of death requires vigilant defensive and coping techniques, especially the distortion of reality through these defenses and fantasies, so that over-whelming terror does not psychologically cripple the organism. The fear of death is so horrific that human beings must insulate themselves in religious, social, and private illusions, rituals, obsessive pursuits, self-glorification, and myriad desperate attempts to lie about the quintessential nature of reality. Death is that terror that induces psychopathology. This book demonstrates that a careful reading of Freud reveals a copious amount of material supporting these propositions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research with the Locus of Control Construct, Volume 1: Assessment Methods was created to serve two purposes. The first is to fill the researcher's need for information about the application of appropriate locus of control scales to their particular purposes or samples. It presents a variety of locus of control scales and describes the relevant research and applications. The second purpose for this book involves the general field of personality psychology. Often personality constructs emerge, occupy center stage for the better part of a decade, and then almost silently disappear from view. By contrast, the locus of control construct has occupied a central position in personality research for a decade. The contributions to this volume represent some of the innovations that extend the utility of the locus of control construct to different areas of concern. It illustrates a simple principle—that a construct continues to be viable only as long as it continues to inspire innovations; if it remains static the construct will eventually disappear. This book is intended to provide information regarding new developments and to encourage new questions and applications that may allow the locus of control construct to outlive the brief life span that is common among personality constructs. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the basic literature on locus of control research.

Book excerpt: Retaliation is a well-established response to abusive supervision. Leading edge research explains the occurrence of supervisor-directed retaliation through processes associated with the strength model of self-control (Baumeister, Vohs, & Tice, 2007). The present research builds on these ideas by considering the role of emotions in the retaliatory processes. 407 participants completed an online survey that included questionnaires measuring personality traits associated with self-control and emotional experiences. Findings indicate that a predisposition to negative emotional experiences predicts retaliatory behavior in response to abusive supervision, even for individuals with a high capacity for self-control. It is suggested that future research should determine whether emotion-driven retaliation is mediated by a desire for revenge.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that abusive supervisor behavior can have psychological, psychosocial, and behavioral impacts on targeted employees, and the literature has primarily focused on the effects of abusive supervisor behavior on the target of the abuse. Although this literature is important, little attention has been paid to the role engagement in abusive supervisor behavior can demonstrate on abusers, such as supervision affective experiences and their future behaviors toward their subordinates and their families. Drawing from affective events theory, I develop a theoretical model that examines abusive supervisor behavior's impact on supervisors' affective experiences. It then examines the impact of these affective experiences on subsequent supervision attitudes, subsequent behaviors toward their subordinates, and the impact on supervisors' family lives. Because this project draws on affective events theory, I focus on the impact of abusive supervisor behavior on the leader and examine supervisor personality (id est, psychopathy and empathy) and perceptions that abusive supervisor behavior was warranted as moderators of abusive supervisor behavior, its impact on supervisor affective reactions, and subsequent attitudinal, behavioral, and work-home outcomes. Data were analyzed from 255 supervisors to test a model of supervisor reactions to engaging in abusive supervisor behavior that is rooted in affective events theory. I found mixed support for the proposed affective events theory paths examining the role of engaging in abusive supervisor behavior on workplace outcomes. I found limited support for the moderating role of psychopathy and did not find support for the moderating role of empathy and perceptions abuse was warranted as moderators. I found some support for the mediating role of positive and negative affect after engaging in abusive supervisor behavior on workplace outcomes. I largely found that the proposed total effects models were significant, indicating that abusive supervisor behavior has important effects on a variety of workplace outcomes. Thus, this research provides a test of the main tenets of affective events theory and uses the theory to explain how engagement in abusive supervisor behavior impacts supervisors and the boundary conditions that affect this relationship. I discuss this research's theoretical and practical contributions and provide an actionable agenda for future research.

Book excerpt: Abusive supervision is a significant area within organizational behavior with bodies of research spanning over perceptions of hostility and those who have been victimized from abusive supervision (Yu & Duffy 2020; Tepper et al., 2007). Additionally, victimization of individuals has been segmented into reasons why a supervisor would result into delivery of abusive behaviors, reciprocal populations including families to receive said behaviors, and the interactive effect of unethical workplace behavior and relationship conflict (Garcia et al., 2014, 2014; Liu et al., 2015; Quade et al., 2017). On an interpersonal basis, as in relationships that constitute of an individual's family, intimate partners, close friends, and other micro-based systems involving direct interaction (Huston & Bentley, 2010), violence has been covered extensively on to why survivors engage in unhealthy relationships, can model their own abuse based on social psychology, as well as roles a supervisor has in supporting the employee (Finkel et al., 2009; Allen et al., 2018; Garcia et al., 2017). Through a manipulative scenario survey, I find support for the hypotheses that abusive supervision increases perceptions of hostility from an abusive behavior. Additionally, I find that the perception of hostility negatively affects a subordinates employee task-resistance, operating separately than the manipulation of abusive supervision alone. There was not a significant finding in regards to interpersonal violence (IPV) moderating perceptions of hostility, but potential limitations and implications for future research are discussed. Hypothesis 1: abusive supervision is positively correlated with subordinates chance of perceiving supervisor hostility Hypothesis 2: previous exposure to IPV will increase the perceived hostility that stems from abusive supervision Hypothesis 3a: Abusive supervision leads to a increase in employee task resistance due to the increase in perceptions of hostility Hypothesis 3b: Employee task resistance is negatively impacted from abusive supervision and increased perceptions of hostility due to IPV.

Book excerpt: The study examines who would become victims of abusive supervision, and among those victims, whose performance would be affected from being abused. Using a sample of 215 full-time US employees occupying a variety of positions across an organization in the finance industry, I found that job performance did not affect the likelihood of becoming the victims of abusive supervision. Further, among the employees who attributed supervisors' abusive motive to injury initiation, abusive supervision was positively related to their consequential job performance.
