Book Synopsis Inspiration and Authority by : Paul J. Achtemeier
Download or read book Inspiration and Authority written by Paul J. Achtemeier and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an evaluation of the Scriptures as the word of God, inspiration is an essential element. The long Protestant experience with this issue is both fruitful and painful, for many have drawn false conclusions from the justified belief in inspiration. Paul Achtemeier is a first-rate scholar who combines scientific investigation with faith, and his sensitivity and honest make this a most useful book for all interested in the Bible. . . . A better practical book on the subject would be hard to find. " +Raymond E. Brown, former Auburn Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Union Theological Seminary, New York ." . . if Achtemeier's book reaches that large body of Christians looking for a nonfundamentalistic doctrine of Scripture, it could play a major role in creating a framework for them. He comes across as possessing a deep love and respect for the Bible and for the Lord, and eager for people to place their minds and lives beneath its authority. He offers us in the end of the doctrine of a covenental Scripture given by God to his people for their edification and renewal, a dynamic document which can perform this service two thousand years after its completion, confronting us with God's Word for our situation, through the power of the Spirit. I am highly grateful for this book and recommend it highly to others." " Clark H. Pinnock, Professor of Theology, McMaster Divinity College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the principal articles by the late Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield having to do with the nature and authority of the Bible. A distinctly biblical theologian, fully abreast of the critical scholarship of the day, and a foe of irrationalism in all its forms -- faith for him was conviction grounded on evidence -- it is not surprising that he devoted such exceptional attention to this theme. Written from time to time and printed in various publications during his lifetime, these articles were included in the volume Revelation and Inspiration published by the Oxford University Press subsequent to his death. - Foreword.

This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been some time since Catholic and liberal Protestant theologians stopped writing seriously on bibliology. Meanwhile, conservative evangelical theologians guard against the introduction of new ideas. In an effort to make headway through this gridlock, Carlos Bovell has commissioned a roundtable discussion on the prospect of whether the inspiration of Scripture might extend beyond authors and texts, and if so, what this might entail for the authority of Scripture. Taken together, the essays in this volume make an invaluable contribution to contemporary literature on the inspiration and authority of the Bible.

Book Synopsis The Inspiration of Scripture by : Paul J. Achtemeier
Download or read book The Inspiration of Scripture written by Paul J. Achtemeier and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians generally agree that the Scriptures are inspired and that this doctrine is of basic importance. But how is the doctrine of inspiration to be understood and what does it mean for our Christian faith? Paul Achtemeier shows how recent knowledge of the way the Scriptures were formed raises problems in regard to the traditional understanding of inspiration. In response, he presents possibilities for a new approach to inspiration that is compatible with recent critical discoveries and allows the Bible to continue to play a meaningful role. He deals with "liberal" and "conservative" views, specific contradictions in the Bible, and what the Bible says about itself. A perceptive study, "The Inspiration of Scripture" proposes a view of inspiration that makes sense for today and probes its implications for the believer and the believing community.
Book Synopsis From Inspiration to Understanding by : Edward W. H. Vick
Download or read book From Inspiration to Understanding written by Edward W. H. Vick and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which we read the Bible grows out of what we believe the Bible to be. Thus it is impossible to discuss methods of interpretation without considering our view of inspiration, the gathering of the canon, and even the reception of the Bible by the community of faith. And so, Edward W. H. Vick starts this comprehensive discussion of hermeneutics—the interpretation of Scripture—by looking at what the Bible is, and what empowers its authority. He brings a lifetime of experience, teaching and writing to the task. In this examination, he takes up such diverse topics as inspiration, canonization, authority, infallibility, inerrancy, verbal inspiration, sola scriptura, tradition, myth, and many related topics. Dr. Vick always relates these elements to the overarching questions: How shall we read Scripture? How shall we understand it? How does it impact the way we live and act? There are many books on how to read the Bible, but there are few that will offer this comprehensive and systematic study. If you apply the principles you find here to your own study, you will find the scriptures opening up in new ways. Dr. Vick will help you move beyond the assumptions that often stand in the way of our personal Bible study and see the remarkable variety and power that is mediated through this book we call the Bible.

Book Synopsis Evangelical Theories of Biblical Inspiration by : Kern Robert Trembath
Download or read book Evangelical Theories of Biblical Inspiration written by Kern Robert Trembath and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-03 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration of the Bible is central to Christian faith, yet there is no general agreement on the nature of this inspiration. In this provocative book, Kern Robert Trembath reviews seven major evangelical explanations of inspiration and demonstrates that all either view the Bible itself as the actual recipient of inspiration or explain biblical authority on grounds more appropriate to the doctrine of God--in effect investing the Bible with characteristics that properly belong only to God. Building on the work of William Abraham, Trembath constructs his own theory of inspiration--one that regards inspiration as a tripartite concept involving the elements of initiator, means, and receiver. He insists that only a human being can be the recipient of inspiration and that the Bible must therefore be understood as the means, rather than the end, of the process. He goes on to articulate a new definition of biblical inspiration--as "a mediated enhancement of human experience by God, through the Bible"--and argues that this new understanding of inspiration is most compatible with a Thomistic doctrine of God, which insists that God's acts are mediated through the world, rather than immediately occurring in it.
