Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inscriptions of Cos I spent some time at Cos in 1888, hunting for inscriptions; and, as I found a good many new ones, and convinced myself that others had been inaccurately edited, I thought that the publication of a Corpus of the Coan Inscriptions would be desirable. It is much to be wished that the inscriptions of the more important Greek islands should be published in separate form, as the islands were always, and still are, very distinct communities, most retentive of their peculiarities. I shall consider myself rewarded for any labour expended on the present work, if some one caps it with a Corpus of the Rhodian Inscriptions - really a most necessary thing. I give all the Coan Inscriptions known to me: no doubt some already published have escaped me, but, I hope, nothing important. In inscription-hunting, Mr. John Kalesperis, of Calymnos, was of immense service to me. I spent much time, and some money, in trying to gain access to the fortress, which contains a good many inscribed stones, but in vain: the story of my endeavours is instructive, but is too old to tell. There are probably a good many inscriptions, still unpublished, in Turkish houses in the town, and others built into ruined cisterns and old wells; but I think that I nearly exhausted the accessible material. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on contacts between Anatolian languages within and outside Anatolia. The selected essays, written by members of ongoing research projects on Anatolian languages, present case studies from both the first and second millennia. These include etymological and morphophonological investigations within the framework of Graeco-Anatolian contacts, as well as a critical essay on the possible Anatolian-Etruscan contacts. Alongside strictly linguistic analysis, the essays cover different aspects of cultural contacts (the origin of the word for ‘salt’ in Luwian), toponyms (in Lycia), and religion (the god called King of Kaunos), and are introduced with a detailed overview of the origins of the Anatolian linguistic landscape.
Book Synopsis The Jewish Manumission Inscriptions of the Bosporus Kingdom by : Elizabeth Leigh Gibson
Download or read book The Jewish Manumission Inscriptions of the Bosporus Kingdom written by Elizabeth Leigh Gibson and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 1999 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. Leigh Gibson analyses a little-known group of Greek inscriptions that record the manumission of slaves in synagogues located on the hellenized north shore of the Black Sea in the first three centuries of the common era. Through a comparison of this corpus with manumission inscriptions from elsewhere in the Greco-Roman world and an analysis of Greco-Roman Judaism's own interaction with slavery, she assesses the degree to which the Black Sea Jewish community adopted classical traditions of manumissions. In so doing, she tests the often-repeated assumption that these Jewish communities developed idiosyncratic slave practices under the influence of biblical injunctions regarding Israelite ownership of slaves. More generally, she reconsiders the extent of Jewish isolation from or interaction with Greco-Roman culture.Against the backdrop of Greek manumission inscriptions, the Jewish manumissions of the Bosporan Kingdom are unremarkable; they follow the basic outlines of Greek manumission formulae. A review of Greco-Roman Jewish sources demonstrates that biblical precepts on slaveholding were not implemented, even if they were still admired. One element of the manumissions, the ongoing obligation required of the slaves, is somewhat enigmatic and possibly indicates that the Bosporan Jewish community indeed had distinctive manumission practices. These obligations have been commonly interpreted as requiring the slave to participate in the religious life of the community as a condition of his manumission and possibly his concurrent conversion. A close analysis of the clause reveals a more straightforward interpretation: the obligation was a kind of paramone clause, a common feature of Greek manumission inscriptions.E. Leigh Gibson demonstrates that the Jews of this region incorporated Greek manumission practices into their communal life. The execution of private legal contract with the community of Jews as witness in turn suggests that the wider Bosporan community extended respect and recognition to its local Jewish community.

Book Synopsis Latin Loanwords in Ancient Greek by : Eleanor Dickey
Download or read book Latin Loanwords in Ancient Greek written by Eleanor Dickey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, when, and how did speakers of ancient Greek borrow words from Latin? Which words did they borrow? Who used Latin loanwords, and how? Who avoided them, and why? How many words were borrowed, and what kind of word? How long did the loanwords survive? Until now, attempts to answer such questions have been based on incomplete and often misleading evidence, but this study offers the first comprehensive collection of evidence from papyri, inscriptions, and literature from the fifth century BC to the sixth century AD. That collection – included in the book as a lexicon of Latin loanwords – is examined using insights from linguistic work on modern languages to provide new answers that often differ strikingly from earlier ones. The analysis is accessibly presented, and the lexicon offers a firm foundation for future work in this area.
