Book excerpt: Recent improvements in contemporary Chinese society will not only be reflected by new economic models, cultural products, scientific and technological achievements and aesthetic values, but also manifest in diverse unconventional new methods of architectural design. In the twentieth century, one of the main issues in architectural debate was to find a new synthesis between modernity and national tradition. However, outcomes were often reduced to borrowing some formal features from the past to uncritically combine with the ubiquitous international style and other trends. It was only at the end of the century that some authors in China began to work on a deeper connection with traditional cultural values. Their projects keep the essence of all times specific national character in a work which, however, undoubtedly belongs to our present time. This research picks selected pioneering cases to study how design and art in contemporary Chinese society develops and innovates departing from the deeply set ideologies of traditional Chinese national culture. The relations between architecture and society, architecture and man, architecture and environment, architecture and history and architecture and culture will be analyzed through the study of present-time Chinese architects' with successful attempts at contributing unique architectural alternatives for contemporary China: Leoh Ming Pei, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, Cui Kai, prestigious member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Wang Shu, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2012 and others. As the main goal of the present research, it will be emphasized that it is possible nowadays to pave new ways of architectural design which are capable of fulfilling requirements and functional needs in modern times, but are simultaneously, truly, meaningfully in connection to the country's highly appreciated ancient values. These were expressed in diverse manifestations of Chinese culture and art through the different historical periods, mainly in architecture, city design, gardening and painting.By combining modern architectural languages and design methods with the traditional Chinese aesthetic and culture, these masters have created an architectural pattern marked with Chinese cultural features, which not only present a historical continuity with the best traditional examples, but also provides a new perspective for gaining a better understanding of the old culture as well as draws attention to the true spirit of their work. This work tackles this question from a quite wide perspective which includes aspects from history, politics, philosophy, religion, landscape, garden design, poetry, connection to nature, light, space, materials and building techniques. The research was developed simultaneously to another one in the same research unit which focuses exclusively on -and so goes deeper into- one of the most relevant concepts of this approach: Chinese traditional painting and architectural poetics in present day architecture and design. Both researches complement each other so opening a field -a new and fertile one- for further exploration, practice and research.Through the balance of the adoption of their own intuitions, the conscious utilization of new building materials, and the respect for Chinese history and culture, these designers have been constantly developing and improving creative ideas and aesthetic notions, and carried an unremitting practice in the creation of an all-encompassing, past, present and future Chinese architectural space. They have started the engine of a new contemporary design which is deeply committed to geographical, natural, cultural and historical context, in opposition to the globally dominant formalism that is currently repetitively sweeping across China and the rest of the world.

This thesis presents five case studies of current Chinese completed building projects in two major urban settings; Beijing and Shanghai, designed by Western architects. Each case study is examined in each of the basic elements of architecture in relation to traditions and modern architecture. These case studies are then used as the foundation for specific recommendations for future development of contemporary Chinese architectural regionalism, in particular focusing on ways to integrate traditional or vernacular techniques, devices and forms with modern needs, modern technologies, and foreign influences in order to enhance the regional culture and built environment. There is distinction made between Beijing and Shanghai in which Beijing is more of a historic city emphasizing Chinese government, while Shanghai is more of an economic nerve of China emphasizing trade, finance and international business. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, Chinese traditional architecture and the French-derived methods of the École des Beaux-Arts converged in the United States when Chinese students were given scholarships to train as architects at American universities whose design curricula were dominated by Beaux-Arts methods. Upon their return home in the 1920s and 1930s, these graduates began to practice architecture and create China’s first architectural schools, often transferring a version of what they had learned in the U.S. to Chinese situations. The resulting complex series of design-related transplantations had major implications for China between 1911 and 1949, as it simultaneously underwent cataclysmic social, economic, and political changes. After 1949 and the founding of the People’s Republic, China experienced a radically different wave of influence from the Beaux-Arts through advisors from the Soviet Union who, first under Stalin and later Khrushchev, brought Beaux-Arts ideals in the guise of socialist progress. In the early twenty-first century, China is still feeling the effects of these events. Chinese Architecture and the Beaux-Arts examines the coalescing of the two major architectural systems, placing significant shifts in architectural theory and practice in China within relevant, contemporary, cultural, and educational contexts. Fifteen major scholars from around the world analyze and synthesize these crucial events to shed light on the dramatic architectural and urban changes occurring in China today—many of which have global ramifications. How can Chinese architects, educated and working globally, identify Chinese culture when designing and building today’s China? New buildings in the Chinese urban condition mostly constructed by international firms, which is leading to the lack of local unique replaced by global similarity. To solve this architectural problem, well-known Chinese architect Liang Sicheng (1901-1972) first proposed the grammar and language of buildings and transferability of different local architectural language. He is the founder of Chinese modern architecture and city planning. His ideas still influence most Chinese architects and architecture students. According to Liang Sicheng’s study, the pattern language abstracts from the traditional architecture to state Chinese culture as a valuable tool for future Chinese architectural design. This paper begins with a brief discussion of the current cultural situation in China, and based on the case studies of Chinese buildings that attempt to combine vernacular culture with contemporary buildings, this paper suggests the trend of “New China” architecture style will lead to a great transition of Chinese contemporary buildings. Using the unique Chinese elements from the traditional architecture to reconstruct new Chinese buildings, this experiment will also contribute to the worldwide architectural design for a unique national identity.

The intellect of this minute and genteel ﬁ gure held fast against the storms of history. The observation of events and the humanist and scientiﬁ c principles of his personal culture continuously nourished an increasingly more effective reﬂ ection on the meaning of architecture in today’s world. He also clearly saw its inextricable ties to the substance of the city and the impossibility to substitute the ﬁ gure of the architect – scientist, humanist and artist. A few years after our meeting, having absorbed direct lessons from Wu’s work as an architect and theoretician, I proposed an Italian translation of an anthology of his writings. Starting from six aspects, this book systematically describes modern bamboo building development, analyzes the opportunities and challenges faced by the bamboo construction industry and provides guidance for the development of the bamboo construction industry in China. Particularly in Chapter 6, more than 70 examples constructed mostly since 2014 are selected to provide a detailed overview of the use of bamboo as decorative and structural materials. In order to fully explore the potential of bamboo in engineering applications, the authors introduce the use of bamboo construction for transportation facilities (bridges, highway landscape fences and bus stations), landscape, water pipelines and urban municipal tunnels. The authors hope readers are inspired by these most vivid cases and experience the charm of modern Chinese bamboo architecture.

Book excerpt: For the past 30 years, The Chinese journal Time + Architecture (Shidai Jianzhu) has focused on publishing innovative and exploratory work by emerging architects based in private design firms who were committed to new material, theoretical and pedagogical practices. In doing so, this book argues that the journal has engaged in the presentation and production of a particular form of critical architecture - described as an ’intermediate criticality’ - as a response to the particular constraints of the Chinese cultural and political context. The journal’s publications displayed a ’dual critique’ - a resistant attitude to the dominant modes of commercial building practice, characterised by rapid and large-scale urban expansion, and an alternative publishing practice focusing on emerging, independent architectural practitioners through the active integration of theoretical debates, architectural projects, and criticisms. This dual critique is illustrated through a careful review and analysis of the history and programme of the journal. By showing how the work of emerging architects, including Yung Ho Chang, Wang Shu, Liu Jiakun and Urbanus, are situated within the context of the journal’s special thematic editions on experimental architecture, exhibition, group design, new urban space and professional system, the book assesses the contribution the journal has made to the emergence of a critical architecture in China, in the context of how it was articulated, debated, presented and perhaps even ’produced’ within the pages of the publication itself.
