Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the distribution of bamboo forest and bamboo species for construction, the types and characteristics of both engineered and natural full-culm bamboo materials for construction, the development history and research status of different forms of bamboo architecture. We go on to describe standards, relevant international organizations, research institutions and production and processing enterprises and typical cases. Starting from six aspects, this book systematically describes modern bamboo building development, analyzes the opportunities and challenges faced by the bamboo construction industry and provides guidance for the development of the bamboo construction industry in China. Particularly in Chapter 6, more than 70 examples constructed mostly since 2014 are selected to provide a detailed overview of the use of bamboo as decorative and structural materials. In order to fully explore the potential of bamboo in engineering applications, the authors introduce the use of bamboo construction for transportation facilities (bridges, highway landscape fences and bus stations), landscape, water pipelines and urban municipal tunnels. The authors hope readers are inspired by these most vivid cases and experience the charm of modern Chinese bamboo architecture.

Book excerpt: Fast-growing and local to some of the poorest communities in the tropics and subtropics, bamboo holds huge potential for climate change mitigation, innovative construction and job creation, but the material is rarely used for more than simple construction and household use. Modern Engineered Bamboo Structures collects the papers presented at the third International Conference on Modern Bamboo Structures (ICBS2018, Beijing, China, 25-27 June 2018). The overarching theme of the book is ‘Enhancing Cooperation for Green Development through Bamboo’s Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals’. The contributions focus on how to realize bamboo’s huge potential in a number of areas: sustainable commodity production, disaster-resilient construction, poverty alleviation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, land restoration and biodiversity protection. Modern Engineered Bamboo Structures recognizes bamboo’s various benefits, and aims at ministers, policymakers and representatives from research institutes, development organizations, NGOs or UN bodies and the private sector.

Book excerpt: Bamboo is in the spotlight as a potential building material in the current pursuit of a CO2-neutral society, due to its rapid maturation and excellent mechanical properties. Despite the growing interest in bamboo in academia and society, there is a lack of systematic understanding of the fabrication, design and construction processes using bamboo as a modern industrial material. This is the first book to describe a new category of structural systems constructed with engineered bamboo. It gives a definition of engineered bamboo (glubam) in an analogy with steel structures and wood structures. Structural systems and components have been designed using glubam; then industrialized production processes of glubam are described. Based on state-of-the-art research, design guidelines are suggested, in a comparable and parallel approach to the existing guidelines for composite wood structures. The book also discusses bamboo structures in the context of sustainable development, including the benefits of using bamboo as an alternative or replacement for wood, especially for developing countries, many of which are faced with the lack or destruction of forest resources.

Book excerpt: What does Chinese mean in contemporary architecture? What does it mean being a Chinese in the making of architecture? What is expected of a Chinese person in his work? Will 'Chinese-ness' come about by the architect being Chinese, or by the context being Chinese, or both, or neither? Is 'Chinese-ness' genuinely discernable, a quality that can be consciously pursued? Or is it something that comes from within, a subtle reflection of personality conditioned by ancestral mentality and taste, and therefore incidental rather than intentional? While I put forward my belief, back in 1989, that in order to ponder the future of Asian(Chinese) architecture, we have to come to terms with who the modern Asian (Chinese) is, am I still correct? Whereas our first book The City of Architecture proclaims a clear vision of the evolution of Architecture from the City, this book, quite differently, poses more questions asked than conclusions drawn. But is not value ultimately more in the asking?

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, ( Atlantic International University ), course: Doctorate in Architecture (PhD), language: English, abstract: China is transforming in terms of economy, social, culture and physical development. Due to this, rapid urban development in China threatens the urban fabric of Chinese cities. Development has attempted to balance strong Western influences with traditional Chinese forms and has met mixed results. Although, it is already in existence of a new current of Chinese regionalism in architecture but this trend could be further improved by careful applications of the principles of architecture. This thesis presents five case studies of current Chinese completed building projects in two major urban settings; Beijing and Shanghai, designed by Western architects. Each case study is examined in each of the basic elements of architecture in relation to traditions and modern architecture. These case studies are then used as the foundation for specific recommendations for future development of contemporary Chinese architectural regionalism, in particular focusing on ways to integrate traditional or vernacular techniques, devices and forms with modern needs, modern technologies, and foreign influences in order to enhance the regional culture and built environment. There is distinction made between Beijing and Shanghai in which Beijing is more of a historic city emphasizing Chinese government, while Shanghai is more of an economic nerve of China emphasizing trade, finance and international business. Together, the two cities form the forefront of the built environment showcase of China.

Book excerpt: Berlin-based writer Dubrau has selected 25 buildings for presentation, each with about eight to ten pages containing full-page or double-page photos, plans, and a page of text describing particularities of context, construction, challenges, and unique features. His essay on new trends in Chinese architecture, and another essay on the subject (by Brigitta Hahn-Melchor) describe some of the economic, social, cultural, and environmental forces that are shaping what has been getting built in China, much that is extraordinarily innovative and, also, extraordinarily controversial from both Chinese and international points of view.
