Book Synopsis Grace for the Injured Self by : Terry D Cooper
Download or read book Grace for the Injured Self written by Terry D Cooper and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposal of Grace for the Injured Self is to help the reader to understand the significance of psychological injuries that we all may suffer. Even under the best circumstances in life, these injuries may threaten our self-cohesion and self-esteem. Cooper and Randall refer to the self psychology approach and perspective of Heinz Kohut -considered by many people as the most significant psychoanalyst since Sigmund Freud- as a way of healing these injuries. The book constantly stresses the empathic presence of another as a source of grace: the empathic responsiveness of others holds our selves together and helps us not to fall apart.
Book Synopsis Nonsuicidal Self-Injury by : E. David Klonsky
Download or read book Nonsuicidal Self-Injury written by E. David Klonsky and published by Hogrefe Publishing GmbH. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a baffling, troubling, and hard to treat phenomenon that has increased markedly in recent years. Key issues in diagnosing and treating NSSI adequately include differentiating it from attempted suicide and other mental disorders, as well as understanding the motivations for self-injury and the context in which it occurs. This accessible and practical book provides therapists and students with a clear understanding of these key issues, as well as of suitable assessment techniques. It then goes on to delineate research-informed treatment approaches for NSSI, with an emphasis on functional assessment, emotion regulation, and problem solving, including motivational interviewing, interpersonal skills, CBT, DBT, behavioral management strategies, delay behaviors, exercise, family therapy, risk management, and medication, as well as how to successfully combine methods.
Download or read book Injured Men written by Ira Brenner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Injured Man is a unique casebook of clinical material pertaining to men who have sustained trauma. With the exception of those publications dealing with the military, clinical vignettes of traumatized Individuals are overwhelmingly female. Richly illustrated with both brief and extensively detailed analytic case reports, Injured Man focuses instead on the plight of men. With his perspective on dissociation and dissociative disorders, Brenner presents a traumatic pathway to the development of a masculine self in those with female bodies. In dealing with the long-term effects of trauma, he ultimately advocates a pluralistic approach in this fascinating volume." --Book Jacket.
Book Synopsis The Tender Cut by : Patricia A. Adler
Download or read book The Tender Cut written by Patricia A. Adler and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cutting, burning, branding, and bone-breaking are all types of self-injury, of the deliberate, non-suicidal destruction of one's own body tissue, a practice that emerged from obscurity in the 1990s and spread dramatically as a typical behavior among adolescents. Long considered a suicidal gesture, The Tender Cut argues instead that self-injury is often a coping mechanism, a form of teenage angst, and expression of group membership, and a type of rebellion, converting unbearable emotional pain into manageable physical pain. An important portrait of a troubling behavior, The Tender Cut illuminates the meaning of self-injury in the 21st century, its effects on current and former users, and its future as a practice for self-discovery or a cry for help."--P. Book Synopsis The Injured Self by : Dov R. Aleksandrowicz
Download or read book The Injured Self written by Dov R. Aleksandrowicz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the clinical implications of innate developmental individuality. The authors present a model of what they call “developmentally informed” therapy, based on the assumption that biologically determined (or co-determined) maladjusted behaviours and deficiencies of ego functions cannot be resolved by interpretation of an unconscious conflict, but need to be “validated”, analysed, and integrated with the personality. Several clinical case histories illustrate the authors’ approach. The case presentations are followed by a discussion of counselling parents of children with developmental deviations. The authors also discuss the theoretical issues that arise from this and the role of cognition, especially learning, in the therapeutic relationship and the therapeutic process. Finally, the authors present some recent advances in neuro-behavioural sciences which appear relevant to the issues discussed in the book, and close with a concluding discussion.

Book Synopsis Psyche of the Injured Athlete by : Laura Miele
Download or read book Psyche of the Injured Athlete written by Laura Miele and published by Skillbites. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psyche of the Injured Athlete: the Unspoken Truths presents an intimate look at what happens to athletes who suffer a debilitating, sport career-ending injury. The athlete's identity, the sports family, the daily discipline and work to become an elite athlete are all gone. The psyche of the athlete is damaged, and there is little in place to help them find healing and wholeness. The author, Dr. Laura Miele, PhD, describes her own journey as an elite basketball player who suffered a back injury that ended her promising career and left her on the sidelines. She shares the utter devastation, the consultations with numerous medical professionals searching for a way to rehabilitate and continue to play, and the realization that she needed to move on from her dream. She is an expert in fitness, sports and recreation with a PhD in Sports Psychology, and she brings her understanding of athletic identity, sports injury rehabilitation, and career-ending injury to bear on the lack of mental health resources available to injured athletes and to those who care for them. This book is intended to help coaches, parents, medical practitioners, and the injured athletes themselves acknowledge the need for the body, mind and spirit all to be considered when evaluating the health and wellbeing of the injured athlete. The seven comprehensive chapters cover Miele's story, the role of sport in the identity of elite athletes, the loneliness and despair of an injured, depressed athlete, and finally her detailed solutions to help the injured athlete cope with and move beyond their injury, to transition out of sports and into a successful career and life. The insights from coaches and athletes sprinkled throughout the book corroborate and expand on the topics of athletics, injury, loss and recovery. Dr. Miele notes that athletes have everything they need to heal and move on if they are given the appropriate support. They are disciplined, they know how to work hard, and they are team players. With the right mental health resources and guidance, they can integrate their love of their sport into their life and come back strong. Whether you are a parent, coach, doctor or athlete, this book is a must read. Better analysis and treatment are critical to the mental health of elite athletes, and you owe it to yourself or the athlete you care for to better understand the psyche of the injured athlete.

Book excerpt: Written by a leading mental skills coach and contributing editor to Runner's World (US), this is a practical guide to building the psychological resilience that athletes need to recover from injury and rebound stronger. Injuries affect every athlete, from the elite Olympian to the weekend racer. In the moment, a traumatic crash, a torn muscle, or a stress fracture can feel like the most devastating event possible. While some athletes are destroyed by the experience, others emerge from their recovery better, stronger, and more confident than ever. The key to a swifter, stronger comeback is the use of mental skills: psychological tools that enable an athlete to take control of their recovery and ultimately use the experience to their advantage. Injury and other setbacks are inevitable – but with training, overcoming them skillfully and confidently is possible. This book will provide a clear, compelling explanation of psychological recovery from injury and a practical guide to building mental resilience. Weaving together personal narratives from star athletes, scientific research, and the specialized clinical expertise of mental skills coach Carrie Jackson Cheadle, it will contain more than 45 Mental Skills and Drills that athletes can use at every phase of their recovery process. These same strategies can help athletes who aren't currently injured reduce their vulnerability to injury, and enable any individual to reach new heights within their sport and beyond.

Book Synopsis Injury in America by : National Research Council
Download or read book Injury in America written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Injury is a public health problem whose toll is unacceptable," claims this book from the Committee on Trauma Research. Although injuries kill more Americans from 1 to 34 years old than all diseases combined, little is spent on prevention and treatment research. In addition, between $75 billion and $100 billion each year is spent on injury-related health costs. Not only does the book provide a comprehensive survey of what is known about injuries, it suggests there is a vast need to know more. Injury in America traces findings on the epidemiology of injuries, prevention of injuries, injury biomechanics and the prevention of impact injury, treatment, rehabilitation, and administration of injury research.

This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers young readers practical coping tools to empower children to feel confident about themselves and become a more active participant in his or her injured parent's life. Every day, many children watch as a parent goes off to a military assignment, often in dangerous situations. Most children will later welcome home their parents who served without incident. Others, however, will greet a parent who suffered a head injury, which changes all their lives. While brain injury is a complex topic, it is an unfortunate fact that certain types of brain injuries, which are all too common in military personnel, affect a person's behaviors such as mood and temper. A previously kind and loving parent may become irritable, short-fused and be intolerant of frustration after a brain injury. To a child, this change can be scary and overwhelming. Children may not understand why Mom or Dad is so different and may blame themselves"--
