Book excerpt: This study examines both long-run and short-run linkages between futures and spot prices for a wide range of agricultural commodities in China and the US. We use the Johansen cointegration test to examine the long-run equilibrium relationship in both multivariate and bivariate contexts. The VECM model is used to examine the information transmission in the short-run. Finally, we use Granger causality test to investigate how the information transmission pattern changes under different economic conditions. We find long-run equilibrium relationships between spot and futures prices in the Chinese markets, as well as the futures prices in China and the US. The long-run relationship is consistent with the LOP theory, which indicates that prices of identical assets in different markets should have the same stream of future cash flows after all adjustments. The short-run analyses show the robust bidirectional relationship between futures and spot prices in China, and the futures prices in China and the US. The findings indicate that Chinese agricultural commodity futures played a significant role in the global commodity futures markets. The GFC subsample results are mixed. In general, the domestic information becomes more important compared to the information in the international markets during the crisis and post crisis periods. Whereas, the US futures markets play important price discovery role than Chinese ones during and after crisis in the bivariate context. The findings of this study contribute to the existing literature on information transmission in agriculture commodity markets in the emerging nations by including the futures markets in China and the futures markets of USA, which is a global dominant market. Study also includes the underlying asset market to provide the relationship among all three asset markets. The findings of this study may have important implication for policy makers in emerging markets who seek to develop policies for stability of the commodity prices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis measures how rapid Chinese agricultural commodity futures markets incorporate past information from Chinese and U.S. markets. Daily trading data from 14 commodity futures contracts in China and the U.S. are used to construct 8 comparable agricultural futures pairs. The results show that over all, Chinese markets incorporate more past information from the U.S. markets compared to the Chinese market. This happens mostly during the non-overlapping trading periods between the two markets. The information released between the end of the Chinese trading session and the beginning of the U.S. floor trading session has a relatively greater impact on Chinese markets.

Book excerpt: This note assesses empirically the role Chinese activity plays in global commodities markets, showing that the strength of China’s economic activity has a significant bearing on commodity prices, but that the impact differs across commodity markets, with industrial production shocks having a substantial impact on metals and crude oil prices and less so on food prices. The size of the impact on the prices of specific commodities varies with China’s footprint in the market for those commodities; the empirical estimates indicate that, over a one-year horizon, a 1 percent increase in industrial production leads to a 5–7 percent rise in metals and fuel prices. The surprise component in Chinese industrial production announcements has a bearing on commodity prices that is comparable in magnitude to that of industrial production surprises in the United States, and this impact is much larger when global risk aversion is high.

Book excerpt: The United States bans imports of certain agricultural and wildlife goods that can carry pathogens or diseases or whose harvest can threaten wildlife stocks or endanger species. Despite these bans, contraband is regularly uncovered in inspections of cargo containers and in domestic markets. This study characterizes the economic factors affecting agricultural and wildlife smuggling by drawing on inspection and interdiction data from USDA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and existing economic literature. Findings reveal that agricultural and wildlife smuggling primarily include luxury goods, ethnic foods, and specialty goods, such as traditional medicines. Incidents of detected smuggling are disproportionately higher for agricultural goods originating in China and for wildlife goods originating in Mexico. Fragmentary data show that approximately 1 percent of all commercial wildlife shipments to the United States and 0.40 percent of all U.S. wildlife imports by value are refused entry and suspected of being smuggled.

Book excerpt: The FDA¿s increased attention to food imports from China is an indicator of safety concerns as imported food becomes more common in the U.S. Addressing safety risks associated with these imports is difficult because of the vast array of products from China, China¿s weak enforcement of food safety standards, its heavy use of ag. chem., and environ. pollution. FDA refusals of food shipments from China suggest recurring problems with ¿filth,¿ unsafe additives, labeling, and vet. drug residues in fish and shellfish. Chinese authorities try to control food export safety by certifying exporters and the farms that supply them. However, monitoring such a wide range of products for the different hazards is a difficult challenge for Chinese and U.S. officials. Ill.

This book was released on 2024-01-27 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. In the current situation of rapid economic development, the competition in the market is increasingly fierce. The drawbacks of traditional enterprise management and the backward management concept have seriously hindered the normal development of enterprises. In order to improve their competitive advantages and market share, enterprises must optimize their management methods and build a modern business administration system. In this situation, enterprises can only promote their development process by improving their business management mode and formulating scientific business management policies. Data science is one of the most important tools for optimizing business administration. Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract value from data. Data scientists use a combination of skills (including statistics, computer science and business knowledge) to analyze data collected from the Web, smartphones, customers, sensors and other sources. Data is the cornerstone of innovation, and data scientists gather information from data, discovering hidden trends from raw data and generating insights that companies can use to transform business problems into research projects that can then be translated back into practical solutions. Based on this, BADS 2023 discusses the state of modern business administration and the corresponding improvement measures in the context of the current reality, and It also provides a platform for scholars in related fields to exchange and share information, discuss how the two affect each other, and promote the modernization of business administration by studying certain business administration issues. To open new perspectives, broaden horizons, and examine the issues being discussed by the participants. Create an international-level forum for sharing, research and exchange that will expose participants to the latest research directions, results and content in different fields, thus inspiring them to come up with new research ideas.

Many of these policies have had distortive impacts, resulting in much discussion and controversy in the context of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Round of trade negotiations.
