Book excerpt: This paper proposes that the influence of economic development on the status of women and fertility behavior can best be understood within the context of the world economic system. Foreign investment and trade dependency are hypothesized to lower the economic status of women. In turn, efforts to reduce fertility may be stymied by the lowered status of women and economic disdevelopment generated by investment and dependency. Cross-sectional regression analyses on a sample of 105 nation-states indicate that foreign investment and dependency have negative effects on women's economic status. Net of the level of development and the educational and economic status of women, investment and dependency through the effects of income inequality and infant mortality also operate to raise fertility behavior in 1975. Family planning programs are likely to be less than effective if the influence of the world economic system and the declining economic status of women on fertility are not taken into consideration.

By 2020 fertility and contraceptive use in Asia and Latin America reached levels commonly observed in the developed world. Africa’s fertility is still high, but transitions have started in all countries. This monograph is the first to provide a comprehensive analysis of these trends and their determinants, covering changes in reproductive behaviour (e.g., use of contraception and abortion), preferences (e.g., desire to limit and space births) and the role of socioeconomic development (e.g., education). The role of government policies and in particular family planning programs is discussed in depth. Particular attention is given to provide a balanced assessment of several political and scientific controversies that have beset the field. As such this book provides an interesting read for a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and public health policy makers.

Book excerpt: The relationship between women's status, which is defined in terms of the degree to which they are economically dependent on men, and fertility in developing countries is examined. The paper adopts a particular theoretical perspective regarding fertility determinants and explores the implications of women's status within that context. This perspectives gives special attention to the value of children as security assets in settings where public welfare assistance is minimal or non-existent and financial and insurance markets are poorly developed. In this context, women's economic status, and the institutional factors that create a degree of dependence, determine the relevance of sex of children in defining security goals. High dependence results is defining security goals in terms of surviving sons. Given similar security needs, and other things being equal, fertility will be considerably higher in settings where there is a strong preference for sons than in settings where son preference is weak. A cross-national empirical analysis is presented that supports this argument.

Book excerpt: Scholars have charged population growth with lowering aggregate income per capita, depleting natural resources, reducing the quality of the environment, and causing more unequal distribution of income. Maintaining that the order of these concerns should be reversed, Peter H. Lindert emphasizes the tendency of higher fertility and population growth to heighten economic inequalities. His analysis also improves our knowledge of the ways in which economic developments affect fertility. The author develops an integrated model of fertility behavior featuring an original way of defining and measuring the relative cost of an extra child. U.S. fertility patterns in the twentieth century, he shows, are partially explained by the interplay of a model of intergenerational taste formation and fluctuation in relative child costs. His reinterpretation of patterns in the inequality of schooling and income in America highlights the role of fertility and other demographic forces. From the author's analysis it appears that concern over rapid population growth is more justified on income-distribution grounds than on grounds of effects on average per capita income. In showing that this is so, Professor Lindert describes how families' use of time has changed since the late nineteenth century. Originally published in 1978. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to identify those economic factors that are most relevant to the decision of optimum family size. Using techniques pioneered by Gary S. Becker and his associates at Chicago, the author constructs a model of family welfare maximization, in which satisfaction is derived from Child Services and Living Standard. Given changes in such factors as family status, urbanization, parents' education and combined income, he proceeds to identify traditional income and substitution effects, effects resulting from shifts in preference patterns, and finally, effects attributable to various stochastic factors. The model is tested using cross-sectional data (county) from three U.S. regions at various stages of economic progress in 1970. In this way, the importance of economic factors in planning family size can be ascertained.
