Purpose: To determine the influence of the type of sport on regional and total BMD and its association with dietary energy, vitamin D and calcium intake. Methods: Seventy-three female students from McGill University were evaluated (average age of 20.8 years old, height 167.4 cm, weight 62.3 kg, and BMI 22.4). Forty-four athletes of 4 different Varsity Teams: basketball (n=13), volleyball (n=11), figure skating (n = 13), and synchronized swimming (n=7); and 29 age-matched sedentary students took part in the investigation. Dietary intake, Vitamin D and Calcium intake were assessed using a 3-day Food Log and a FFQ (short version) then analysed with the Food ProcessorTM Software. Total Body (TB), lumbar spine (LS) (L1-L4) and femoral neck (FN) BMD were assessed by DXA scanning. A one-way ANOVA explored between-group differences. This study was designed to: (1) Determine the prevalence of varsity athletic participation among female university graduates who participated in a mail survey; and, (2) Compare BMDs of high school varsity female athletes with women who were sedentary during the same time period, while controlling for covariates. Book excerpt: Background: Much of the nutrition research surrounding bone health in athletes has been limited to the influence of eating disorders, calorie restriction, or poor energy balance in conditions such as the Female Athlete Triad or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). From other population research, it is purported that dietary factors such as calories, protein, calcium, and vitamin D are critically important to bone health. However, less research has explored the role of these factors in the bone health of adult pre-menopausal athletes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of select nutritional variables with BMD at various skeletal sites. Methods: This study recruited a total of 101 adult pre-menopausal female recreational runners. Baseline laboratory visits included anthropometry, dual-x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), a three-day food record, and phlebotomy. Thirty-nine subjects participated in the follow up laboratory visit which included the same procedures except for phlebotomy. The 3-day food record was entered into ESHA Food Processor (SQL version 10.2) to determine average daily intake of calories, calcium, and protein while 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were obtained from blood. DXA scan sites included non-dominant hip, femoral neck, lumbar spine, distal forearm, and total body. Statistical analyses employed SPSS (version 28) to determine if significant correlations exist between nutritional variables of interest with BMD. Additionally, change variables from calories and dietary protein intake were compared to BMDs from baseline to follow-up. Results: The select nutritional variables were not significantly correlated with BMD. However, calories did show a trend for a small positive correlation with TB (r=0.188;p=0.060). Regression models for prediction of total body (TB) BMD demonstrated lean body mass (LBM), calories, and protein as a reasonable prediction model. Conclusions: Despite poor correlations between nutritional variables and BMD sites, prediction models indicated the importance of LBM, calories, and protein as potential nutritional variables to help target BMD outcomes.

Book excerpt: Because athletes often seek to enhance their performance and body composition through nutrition, researchers must continue to investigate the current dietary consumption and the relationship of diet to body composition to best individualize nutrition guidance for athletes. Exploration of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake provides insight on possible nutrition trends in specific athlete populations and risks for deficiencies. Calcium, magnesium, and zinc affect physiological mechanisms and systems needed for athletic performance, such as calcium for bone health; magnesium for energy production; and, zinc for the function of hundreds of enzymes and proteins. One purpose of our research was to determine the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in female and male athletes, including runners, triathletes, rowers, CrossFit athletes, and General athletes, 18 years of age and older. We also investigated the presence of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake of these minerals. Finally, we examined possible correlations among these mineral intakes and body composition (bone mineral density [BMD] and percent body fat) to determine the strongest predictors of body composition. We evaluated the dietary intake and body composition of 247 athletes, 129 women and 118 men, with a mean age of 34.86±11.38 years. The population included runners (n=90), General athletes (n=59), triathletes (n=43), rowers (n=34), and CrossFit athletes (n=21). Dietary intake was assessed via a 2005 Block Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), which analyzes one's annual macronutrient and micronutrient intake. Bone mineral density (total body, lumbar spine, and dual femoral neck) and percent body fat were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). One sample T-tests were used to compare the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in female and male athletes. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine differences in dietary intake between the sexes and among various sports. Multiple regression analyses were utilized to identify the strongest predictors for BMD and percent body fat. All data were analyzed using standard SPSS version 25 software, with the alpha a priori set at 0.05.
