Neutrality is important within a classroom, but passion is rarely neutral and can spark interest and motivation in some students but it is also possible it can have a negative effect. There were 14 participants in this study which included teachers from a middle and high school suburban district in Central New York. All participants responded to a questionnaire and three out of 14 participated in an individual interview and classroom observations during social studies lessons. It is clear from this analysis that teachers' enthusiasm creates a positive impact on students' learning and the converse is also true. Teachers may want to reflect on their opinions to maximize students learning in the social studies classroom. Questionnaire and interview questions are appended. (Contains 9 figures.).

The first section provides a broad and integrative analysis of the interrelated topics of rationales, definitions, approaches, goals, and objectives of social studies. The second section, "Curriculum Organization in Social Studies," describes the typical pattern of social studies programs from kindergarten through grade 12, stating that despite numerous variations that have occurred, the dominant pattern throughout the nation is one that was established more than 60 years ago. "Social Studies Curriculum Materials," the third section of the volume, describes the great extent to which students, teachers, administrators, and the public accept and rely on curriculum materials as essential aids to teaching, learning, and classroom management. Foremost among curriculum materials being used are textbooks. The topic of the fourth section is "Social Studies Teachers." There is general agreement that the teacher is "the central figure," the "key," or "the magic ingredient" in the learning process. The fifth section, "Instructional Practices in Social Studies," presents a detailed report on what teachers do. The last section, "Barriers to Change in Social Studies," focusing on the fact that the new social studies had relatively little impact on the schools, explores reasons for lack of change in schools. Furthermore, the study included a discussion of the factors that influence the actions of teachers related to the change in the social studies curriculum. This allowed for an analysis of potential changes in instructional decision making, such as including cooperative learning strategies, that were the result of the change in curriculum. The study is significant as changes in recommended instructional strategies have occurred in recent years. Additionally, research in the field of cooperative learning has primarily occurred in fields outside of secondary social studies to this point. The researcher investigated which, if any, perceptions held by teachers regarding the implementation of the new standards influence a teachers’ willingness to include cooperative learning strategies and 21st Century skill building in his or her practice. The theoretical framework for the study includes a heuristic investigation related to the implementation of a new curriculum and a teacher’s instructional practice. Using a qualitative research design, the researcher conducted concept mapping, semi-structured interviews with secondary social studies teachers, and a review of teachers’ lesson plans, to collect data regarding the teacher’s feelings toward implementing the new social studies curriculum and instructional practice. The collected data was coded to find recurring themes. The themes were utilized in comparison with the researcher’s own reflection on the implementation of new statestandards in instructional practice with commonalities in the experience of social studies teachers. The potential implications for this study include gaining a deeper understanding of the perceptions of teachers during the implementation of a new curriculum as well as factors that influence a teacher’s pedagogical practice. This is valuable due to the recent changes in state ix curriculum and the required changes in instructional practice that come through the verbiage of the new standards. Findings of the study could be used in the future to assist school and district leaders as they develop professional development for their teachers related to new standards.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Social studies teachers face a dilemma when addressing controversial issues in the classroom. Research supports the incorporation of controversial issues into the social studies curriculum as a means of encouraging authentic debate and deliberation among students. While research supports student engagement with controversial issues, the literature is far from consistent as to the role that teachers should play during these lessons. An important question remains unresolved: should teachers divulge their personal opinions to students when teaching lessons involving controversial issues? To examine disclosure, this study asks what underlies teacher decision-making regarding teacher disclosure of personal political beliefs during social studies lessons that involve controversial issues. This multiple case study interviewed twenty secondary social studies teachers across seven suburban schools about how they made disclosure decisions. 15 of the 20 teachers in this study practiced some form of teacher disclosure. For the majority of teachers, disclosure depended upon contextual factors that included the age of students, personal connection to the topic, perceptions of the school and greater community, and the nature of the topic under discussion. While the teachers in this study discussed many factors that guided classroom practice, the most prominent factor involved personal understandings of the appropriate role of the teacher during class lessons. This study involved teachers with a variety of teaching experiences, and found that teaching experience had relatively little impact on how teachers practiced disclosure. Teachers also provided best practice recommendations involving disclosure. Those who did practice disclosure recommended that teachers share their personal beliefs when the topic related to the curriculum, and towards the end of the class lesson. Participants also believed that teachers should balance controversial issues and expressly convey their beliefs to students so that there is no confusion between the teacher's personal beliefs and the curriculum. This study concluded that instead of a focus on whether teachers should practice disclosure, the conversation should shift to how teachers should practice disclosure based on the best practice recommendations voiced by participants.
