Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to begin to take on the behavioral and academic challenges presented by student mobility. In this study, the reading growth of first through sixth grade mobile and non-mobile students were compared to ascertain any significant variances in reading performance. Office discipline referral instances were also be compared between first through sixth grade mobile and non-mobile students to ascertain if there is a significant difference in the number of office discipline referrals between the two groups. This study also investigated the impact of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Interventions on a first through sixth grade mobile student population from a reading achievement and behavioral standpoint. Correlations among first and second eight weeks of both reading growth and office discipline referrals were found to be significant. However, the correlation was much stronger for mobile students than for non-mobile students suggesting a tendency for more changes or improvements that occur to the non-mobile students than mobile one who tend to have similar scoring in both periods. The differences showed no signs for significant different between mobile and non-mobile students among other levels of attributes.

Book excerpt: Research on the effectiveness of educational interventions usually is based on samples of students who remain in the same school over time. In contrast, most students transfer schools at least once during their K-12 school career, not including normative transfers such as those from elementary to middle school (Rumberger, 2002). Even when looking at just the two years prior to the 1998 NAEP, one-third of fourth graders, 19 percent of eighth graders, and 10 percent of twelfth graders had changed schools at least once (Rumberger, 2002). Mobility is higher among low-income and minority populations (Rumberger, 2002). While many studies have investigated the relationship of student mobility with achievement (Alexander, Entwisle, & Dauber, 1996; Reynolds, Chen, & Herbers, 2009; Rumberger & Larson, 1998; Tucker, Marx, & Long, 1998), the degree to which this relationship might vary among schools has not been fully investigated; in other words, are some schools more effective with mobile students than others? Data for the current study were obtained from a prior study of student mobility in a mid-Atlantic state that took place in 2001-2003. (A full description is available in Rogers, 2004.) This study examined complete school history data from a statewide sample of students in order to investigate the relationship between mobility and reading achievement in the sixth year of schooling. Cross-classified, multiple membership models were used to accurately account for students' membership in multiple schools during Year 6 as well as prior years. The relationship between mobility and reading scores was found to be non-significant on average, but examination of the variance components revealed that the impact of student mobility on reading achievement varied significantly among schools. Furthermore, the covariance estimate suggests that mobility gaps are especially large in schools with higher overall levels of achievement. This suggests that further research is necessary that more closely examines the contextual effects of mobility. Tables are appended.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine (a) the effects of a small group targeted intervention to promote generalized social skill use among students at-risk due to high rates of problem behavior and (b) the impact school wide systems of Positive Behavior support (PBS) has on promoting maintenance and generalization compared to traditional school structures. A multi-component social skills training package was implemented in a PBS and non-PBS school. A total of nineteen students participated in 16 weeks of social skills instruction with reinforcement and self-management strategies. Student outcomes from direct observation in the training setting, classroom, and on the playground were compared across schools. In addition, questionnaires were completed by the social skills instructors, teaching staff, classroom teachers of student participants, target students and their parents. Findings resulted in two major conclusions. First, results provide evidence that social skills training combined with behavioral strategies can be an efficient and effective intervention for addressing problem behaviors in schools Overall, data from this study indicate acquisition of social skills as a result of direct instruction. Second, student gains in acquisition and generalization of social skills was greater in the PBS school than in the non-PBS school. Students in school wide systems of support who participated in the social skills training may receive greater benefits than students in the schools without school wide systems of PBS. Differences were also noted in the perceptions of key stakeholders in the two schools. The stakeholders in the PBS school reported high interest in sustaining and maintaining the social skills training as opposed to the staff in the non-PBS school, who did not express interest in continuing the group. Small group targeted interventions may be beneficial for schools to include as one part of a continuum of support for students who do not respond to universal social skills instruction as part of a school wide system of PBS. Implications for application and future research are also discussed.

The comparison shows that the no-mobile (stable) students performed better than the mobile ones in Math and English. The intervention program comprises a set of strategies used to lessen the effect of mobility. The analysis shows that these strategies are effective, and they helped the students to overcome some of the academic problems in English but not in Math.

Book excerpt: Reading problems can have an extremely adverse effect on a person's quality of life, opportunities in education and employment, and access to enjoyable activities (Daly, Chafouleas, & Skinner, 2005). Unfortunately, almost 20% of students in the United States have significant difficulty learning to read (Good, Simmons, & Smith, 1998). Federal legislation drafted in an attempt to address this important issue (No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, Reauthorization of Individuals with Disabilities Act 2004) propose initiatives that are unclear to teachers and practitioners in terms of how to best instruct students to become successful readers. For older students, and students identified with emotional disturbance, research in this area is considerably lacking. Many students with emotional disturbance have poor reading skills which follow them into the later grades and adulthood. This cycle of poor reading and difficult classroom behaviors often spirals out of control, with each variable negatively and reciprocally impacting the other. The purpose of the present study was to investigate of the impact of a two-pronged reading intervention package on specific reading skill acquisition and levels of on-task classroom behavior exhibited by students in an alternative school setting. The interventions used individualized direct instructional techniques with students who were placed in an alternative educational setting as a result of behavioral symptomatology that was considered to be unmanageable in their home school districts. The two interventions focused on improving reading skills through the development of phonemic awareness/basic phonics skills, and repeated readings with error feedback to improve levels of reading fluency. Additionally, the impact of the intervention was also examined in relation to student classroom behaviors believed to be connected to their frustration with the reading process. Two single-subject multiple baseline across subjects research designs were used to assess the effectiveness of the interventions on reading skill development and on-task behavior, and the order of the interventions was reversed for the second experimental condition in order to address the possibility of order effects. Five upper-elementary and middle school level students completed participation in the study. Results indicated noticeable gains across all students in the area of phonemic segmentation. Assessment results in the areas of word reading, phonetic encoding, and reading fluency showed variable results and flat trend lines, indicating nominal growth in these areas. Additionally, behavioral observation data indicated few patterns of positive behavioral change having resulted from intervention participation. Analysis of study design indicated that the interventions as implemented might have been too short to produce meaningful gains for these students who had long-established patterns of reading difficulty. Generalization of gains made in segmentation to the overall reading process would likely require greater frequency of intervention with more opportunities for repetition and practice. The results of this study indicate that further research is needed in the area of designing reading interventions for students with identified emotional disturbance who are attending an alternative school setting, both to improve their ability to read and to potentially improve their behavior by providing for more opportunities for success with reading tasks.

Book excerpt: The current rise in student mobility rates across elementary schools in the United States has presented complications for all parties involved-students, parents, teachers, and school administrators alike. While the impact on student achievement and behavior has been heavily researched, this study focused on the effects of student mobility on teachers and their practices in the classrooms. Through questionnaires and interviews, the opinions and experiences of 115 classroom teachers at five elementary schools were collected and analyzed to identify factors influencing their attitudes and the interventions in place at their schools to help manage their transient populations. Data indicated that teachers hold negative attitudes towards many aspects of student mobility, although not towards the students themselves. Teacher responses conveyed dissatisfaction with many current school procedures, such as the student admission process and the transfer of student information, and that increased pressure on student achievement levels adversely affect their attitudes towards highly mobile students. Because few, interventions were reported to be employed by teachers and their schools, this study also suggested improvements to better manage the complications associated with student mobility.
