Book excerpt: This quantitative study sought to examine the relationship between a married individual's religiosity level and its impact upon his or her level of marital intimacy and marital satisfaction. With all the factors that influence marital intimacy and satisfaction, one of the areas with very little research is that of religiosity and its influence on the marriage relationship. Using a religiously homogenous sample of married individuals, subjects completed the Revised Religious Fundamentalism Scale, the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships, and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale which were designed to measure religiosity, marital intimacy, and marital satisfaction respectively.

The absence of marital satisfaction can lead to poor health, relational stress, and, eventually, divorce. This predictive, correlational study sought to research the relationship between the adoption of a position of rightness, the practice of extrinsic religiosity, and how these factors influence the levels of marital satisfaction among Christian spouses in the United States of America. The researcher used the Brief Version of the Religious Orientation Scale- Revised (ROS-R) to assess the level of intrinsic and extrinsic religious activity of the sample population. To measure the independent variable of their adherence to relational rightness, the researcher used the Revised Sense of Relational Entitlement the community (SRE-R). For the dependent variable of marital satisfaction, the researcher used the Locke-Wallace Marital Assessment Test (LWMAT). Three findings emerged from the study with practical implications for clergy, counselors, and couples: the theme of “false friends”, “religious amplification”, and “one size fits half”. The study concludes that an inflated sense of relational entitlement and extrinsic religiosity negatively impact the marital satisfaction of married Christian couples in the United States.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the complexities of how religious attendance, personal religious activity, and importance of religion are related to marital adjustment and emotional, sexual, and spiritual intimacy. Previous research suggests that church attendance is related to higher marital adjustment; however, the relationship between sexual satisfaction and religiosity appears to be minimal, although Christian authors often suggest a link. The Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), and the Emotional, Sexual, and Spiritual Intimacy Scale (ESSI) were administered to a sample of 88 married individuals. One-way ANOVAs found that religious attendance was not related to marital adjustment, or sexual or emotional intimacies, but it did have a significant relationship to three of the RDAS's subscales; decision-making, stability and values. Furthermore, religious attendance, personal religious activities, and importance of religion had significant relationships with spiritual intimacy, but were not related to emotional and sexual intimacies. Finally, when the sample was divided by frequency of self-reported religious activities, emotional and sexual intimacy were significantly correlated with spiritual intimacy for those endorsing high levels of religious attendance, personal religious activities, or importance of religion, but these correlations were not found for those endorsing low or moderate levels of religious attendance, personal religious activities or importance of religion. The study was limited by convenience sampling, unequal sample sizes, and potentially inconsistent due to the use of self-report measures. Future research may benefit from matching spouses, a more generalizable population, and examining quality of personal religious activities and attendance as opposed to quantity.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Previous research has consistently documented a positive relationship between religion and marital satisfaction. However, these studies often relied upon one construct of religion. Using data from the Marriage and Relationship Study (MARS), a nationally representative dataset of middle to low income couples, this study performs OLS regression analysis to investigate the effects of three constructs of religiosity--personal religious experience, religious homogamy, and joint religious activity--on marital satisfaction to determine which of these measures best accounts for marital satisfaction. The results reveal that joint religious activity is the only significant indicator of marital satisfaction, suggesting that the integrative properties of religion matter most for marital satisfaction. In other words, religion has the greatest positive impact on marriage when a couple practices their faith together. Future research should continue using measures of religion that tap into the integration of religion into marriage when studying the relationship between religion and marital quality.

Book excerpt: Interfaith relationships are a growing area of research. Therefore, this study empirically investigated the links between family connectedness, religiosity, personality traits, and well-being to predict relationship satisfaction within married and cohabitating couples. The study focused on Muslims (n = 106) and Christians (n = 229) participating in either a married or cohabitating intimate relationship. The mean age of participants was 30.87 (SD = 8.7). Statistical analysis included multiple regression, descriptive, and correlational analysis. I present the contributions of my findings to psychology, pastoral care, and other social sciences. Findings indicate that (a) religiosity level influences relationship satisfaction, (b) education level and income have a significant effect on an individual’s well-being and relationship satisfaction, (c) marital status and family connectedness do not have an effect on an individual's religiosity level, (d) increased religiosity has a negative effect on the agreeableness personality trait, and (e) whether or not participants were living together had no influence on conscientiousness or family connectedness.

Book excerpt: Just when the clamor over "traditional" marriage couldn't get any louder, along comes this groundbreaking book to ask, "What tradition?" In Marriage, a History, historian and marriage expert Stephanie Coontz takes readers from the marital intrigues of ancient Babylon to the torments of Victorian lovers to demonstrate how recent the idea of marrying for love is - and how absurd it would have seemed to most of our ancestors. It was when marriage moved into the emotional sphere in the nineteenth century, she argues, that it suffered as an institution just as it began to thrive as a personal relationship. This enlightening and hugely entertaining book brings intelligence, perspective, and wit to today's marital debate.
