Book excerpt: Field experiments were conducted in 2016 and 2017 across nine locations in Kansas to develop and evaluate a procedure for variable-rate applications (VRA) of soil-applied herbicides in corn and grain sorghum based on soil properties. Soil electrical conductivity (EC) and soil organic matter (SOM) data were collected at each location using a Veris MSP3. Soil EC was correlated to soil texture and herbicide algorithms were developed for two different tank-mixes for corn and for grain sorghum. Three algorithms were evaluated in the field for each tank-mix based only on SOM (alg-SOM), SOM and soil texture (alg-SOMtex), or a flat rate based on the average soil properties for the entire field. Rates for each tank-mix were based on the maximum usage rate (MUR) allowed. When soil variability across a field was adequate, VRA based on algorithms were effective at five of the nine locations. Across these five locations, alg-SOM resulted in the same or better weed control at 8 weeks after treatment (WAT) compared to the flat rate and reduced herbicide use by 12% for both tank-mixes in grain sorghum. Using alg-SOMtex reduced herbicide use by 24% in grain sorghum, but had less weed control at several locations compared to the flat rate. VRA was practical at Morganville, KS in 2017. Both alg-SOM and alg-SOMtex increased the amount of herbicide applied compared to the flat rate, but alg-SOMtex resulted in greater Palmer amaranth control (92%) compared to the flat rate (71%). Separate greenhouse and field experiments were conducted in 2017 to evaluate the activity of soil-applied herbicides on controlling HPPD-inhibitor resistant Palmer amaranth populations. A dose-response greenhouse experiment of soil-applied mesotrione and isoxaflutole was performed using resistant (Stafford County) and susceptible (Riley County) Palmer amaranth populations. Reduced susceptibility was observed with resistant-to-susceptible ratios being 7.2 for mesotrione and 4.1 for isoxaflutole. Field experiments were conducted at two locations in KS with one field having HPPD-resistant (Barton County) and the other HPPD-susceptible (Reno County) Palmer amaranth populations. Treatments were three HPPD-inhibiting herbicides [mesotrione (1⁄4X, 1⁄2X, and 1X = 210 g ha−1), isoxaflutole (1⁄2X and 1X = 105 g ha−1), and bicyclopyrone (1X = 50 g ha-1 and 2X in formulated tank-mix with bromoxynil at 700 and 1400 g ha-1)] in comparison to other soil-applied herbicides commonly used for Palmer amaranth control. HPPD-inhibitor treatments were applied alone and tank-mixed with atrazine (2240 g ha−1). Overall, control of Palmer amaranth was reduced for HPPD-resistant compared to -susceptible populations. All treatments of mesotrione and isoxaflutole at 4 WAT resulted in 81 to 99% control in Reno County, but only 55 to 89% control in Barton County. For mesotrione and isoxaflutole treatments across both sites, Palmer amaranth control at 4 WAT was greater when 1X was applied (89%) compared to 0.5X (81%). Tank-mixing atrazine with mesotrione and isoxaflutole increased Palmer amaranth control from 82 to 88%. Soil-applied HPPD-inhibitors were most effective when applied at field usage rate in combination with atrazine for both populations. When using soil-applied HPPD-inhibitors, management recommendations should be the same regardless of Palmer amaranth population.

More information on impact of grass weeds on sorghum yield are needed to optimize the application of nicosulfuron. The research objectives were to evaluate the impact of time of grass weed removal on grain sorghum yield when grown in different crop row spacing and seeding rates and to determine the critical duration of grass weed competition. Field studies were conducted in 2014 and 2015 at the KSU Agricultural Research Center at Hays, KS and the KSU Department of Agronomy Research Farm near Manhattan, KS. Four main treatments were grain sorghum row spacing of 25 and 76 cm at Hays or 20 and 76 cm at Manhattan, and two seeding rates of 125,000 and 150,000 seed ha−1. Within each main plot, seven treatments were established including: weed-free all season using pre-emergence herbicides, weed-free all season by hand, weedy for 2, 3, 4, and 5 weeks after crop emergence in 2014 or weedy for 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after crop emergence in 2015, and weedy all season. The main grass weeds were giant, green, and yellow foxtail species, large crabgrass, and barnyardgrass. Grass weed biomass increased through the season at both locations in 2014 and in Manhattan in 2015. Hays 2014 grain sorghum aboveground stem and leaf biomass across row spacing and seeding rates decreased as weed removal time was delayed through the growing season. Grain sorghum yield decreased with increasing duration of grass weed competition in both years in Manhattan and in 2014 at Hays. Yield loss reached 5% at 2.3 to 25 weeks after sorghum emergence in narrow row spacing and 3.3 to 6.3 weeks after sorghum emergence in wide row spacing, depending on location, demonstrating that removing grass weed competition during these time frames will prevent more than 5% loss in grain sorghum yields.

Book excerpt: Growth chamber, greenhouse and field experiments using conventional grain sorghum were conducted to 1) evaluate the differential response of grain sorghum hybrids to POST application of mesotrione at various rates and application timings, and 2) determine the physiology of tolerance of grain sorghum hybrids to mesotrione. Sorghum response ranged from susceptible to tolerant. Mesotrione dose-response studies on four sorghum hybrids revealed that injury symptoms were greatest in Pioneer 85G01 and least in Asgrow Seneca. Mesotrione applied EPOST (early POST) injured sorghum more than when applied at MPOST (mid POST) or LPOST (late POST) timings. Observed injury symptoms were not well correlated with grain yield and were transient, thus injury did not reduce sorghum grain yield. Foliar absorption or translocation of mesotrione in tolerant hybrids did not differ with that of susceptible hybrids but metabolism was more rapid in tolerant than in susceptible hybrids. Initial grain sorghum injury was severe and will likely be a major concern to producers. Field and growth chambers studies were conducted on herbicide-resistant grain sorghum to 1) determine the effect of quizalofop rates, application timings, and herbicide tank mixes on acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase)-resistant grain sorghum injury and yield, and 2) determine if herbicide metabolism is an additional mechanism that could explain the resistance of ACCase- and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-resistant grain sorghum. Depending on rate, EPOST application caused the greatest injury while the least injury occurred with LPOST application. Crop injury from quizalofop was more prominent at rates higher than the proposed use rate (62 g ha [superscript]-1) in grain sorghum. Sorghum grain yield was not affected by quizalofop regardless of rates or application timings. Weed control was greater when quizalofop was applied with other herbicides than when applied alone. Herbicide treatments except those that included 2,4-D caused slight to no sorghum injury. Results of the quizalofop metabolism study do not support the involvement of differential metabolism in the observed response of grain sorghum to quizalofop. Rimsulfuron metabolism by ALS-resistant sorghum is more rapid than the susceptible genotypes, thus explaining the observed rapid recovery of grain sorghum plants from rimsulfuron injury in the field.

Book excerpt: Atrazine is a foundational herbicide for weed control in both corn (Zea mays L.) and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] production. However, studies have shown that while atrazine may be an effective herbicide for preemergence and postemergence control of weeds, it also has risks. The low Koc of atrazine as well as its extensive use over the past 50 years have led it to become the most common groundwater contaminant near agricultural soils. Given these findings, atrazine has faced severe scrutiny while under consideration for reregistration. In the event that atrazine is not reregistered, corn and grain sorghum producers will be forced to seek alternative herbicides for weed control. Therefore, research was conducted in 2017 and 2018 to test the tolerance of corn and grain sorghum to other photosystem II-inhibiting herbicides in combination with other herbicides and also to test weed control with and without atrazine in corn production systems. When applied preemergence in grain sorghum, all PSII herbicides tested reduced grain sorghum yield compared to atrazine treatments. However, when applied postemergence, diuron, fluometuron, linuron, metribuzin, prometryn, propazine, and simazine did not cause grain sorghum to suffer yield loss when compared to atrazine-containing treatments. When applied preemergence in corn, diuron, linuron, metribuzin, and simazine did not cause yield loss to corn when compared to atrazine. However, when applied postemergence in corn, only corn treated with metribuzin and simazine yielded comparable to corn treated with atrazine. Weed control studies displayed that Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats), pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.), and broadleaf signalgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] can all be controlled without atrazine; however, weed density was low in these studies. This research demonstrates some potential PSII-inhibiting herbicides should be further evaluated to assist corn and grain sorghum producers in controlling weeds if atrazine is not reregistered or its use is severely limited.

On the basis of findings, growing of sorghum with the application of 10-40 ton FYM/ha (depending on the availabality) and with the application of 0.4 kg a.1/ha of atrazine for efficient control of weeds was recommonded for higher yield and good qualuty fodder. The benefit of the applied FYM is also available to next crop and there is no risk of atrazine applied upto 1.6 kg ai/ha in forage sorghum on succeding crop.

Cultural control tactics such as narrowing of row spacings and increasing seeding rates can be effective control methods. The objective of this research was to determine the row spacing and seeding rates that maximizes yield while suppressing weeds. Grain sorghum row spacings of 25, 51, and 76-cm and seeding rates of 75,000, 100,000, 125,000, and 150,000 seeds ha−1 were evaluated in Kansas at Beloit and Manhattan in 2013 and Beloit, Manhattan, and Hays in 2014. Grain sorghum growth and yield response were measured in response to natural weed communities. After evaluation, Beloit was considered a low weed pressure site while Manhattan and Hays were considered to be moderate and high weed pressure sites, respectively. Grain sorghum biomass was different while weed biomass was consistent across row spacings. Yield loss equations and profit functions were derived to determine the amount of grain yield and $ ha−1 loss from each of the three locations. Yield and profit lost was greatest amongst weedy observations. Results indicated that grain sorghum grown on wide row spacings and seeding rates of 125,000 seeds ha−1 out yielded all other treatments under a low weed pressure site (Beloit) and narrow row spacings out yielded wider spacings in moderate and high weed pressure sites (Manhattan and Hays). These results imply that a Kansas grain sorghum producer should evaluate potential weed pressure before determining a final row spacing and seeding rate.
