It describes and analyzes the complex, conflicting relationships between politics and international business. First, a theoretical framework is meticulously constructed. Second, a new dataset on political risk is presented and analyzed. Third, a statistical investigation of the relationship between risks and the location decisions of multinationals is performed. Eye-catching examples of political risk phenomena - such as kidnappings, nationalizations, and armed conflicts - are presented and commented upon throughout the text. The broad focus and real-world examples will provide valuable lessons for business managers, government officials, political risk analysts, and insurers and, more broadly, all students of global affairs and international business.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author and former U.S. secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and Stanford University professor Amy B. Zegart comes an examination of the rapidly evolving state of political risk, and how to navigate it. The world is changing fast. Political risk-the probability that a political action could significantly impact a company's business-is affecting more businesses in more ways than ever before. A generation ago, political risk mostly involved a handful of industries dealing with governments in a few frontier markets. Today, political risk stems from a widening array of actors, including Twitter users, local officials, activists, terrorists, hackers, and more. The very institutions and laws that were supposed to reduce business uncertainty and risk are often having the opposite effect. In today's globalized world, there are no "safe" bets. POLITICAL RISK investigates and analyzes this evolving landscape, what businesses can do to navigate it, and what all of us can learn about how to better understand and grapple with these rapidly changing global political dynamics. Drawing on lessons from the successes and failures of companies across multiple industries as well as examples from aircraft carrier operations, NASA missions, and other unusual places, POLITICAL RISK offers a first-of-its-kind framework that can be deployed in any organization, from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Organizations that take a serious, systematic approach to political risk management are likely to be surprised less often and recover better. Companies that don't get these basics right are more likely to get blindsided.

Book excerpt: This work compresses much of the established literature on risk and investment-business strategy. While it may not offer new direction, it succeeds in bringing together the perspectives of international finance, rooted in country risk analysis, with those of broader social science. It focuses the reader's attention on the political and social forces directly impacting on business operations. This, this book serves as an excellent literature review for academics, and helps the strategic planner in business get a grip on the political risk literature from a multidisciplinary perspective. It deserves a prominent place in the political risk/international business environment literature. The International Executive

Book excerpt: Henisz (management, the Wharton School, U. of Pennsylvania) offers a model of political and regulatory risk assessment for companies investing in the developing world. He argues that most of the problems with conventional political risk measures ultimately stem from their lack of focus on the political systems that they measure. He proposes the adoption of a measure that examines the feasibility of policy change. He tests the theoretical predictions offered by his measure by examining the use of local partners as a political risk mitigation mechanism. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the effects of political risk on multinational corporations after they have made investments in foreign countries. I examine the ex post implications of political risk in the energy industry, as the energy industry presents an environment in which multinational corporations embrace risk and must continually overcome risk to earn favorable returns on their investment. I explore two types of risks that energy multinationals face: risk from the obsolescing bargain and socio-political conflict risk from non-state actors. Regarding the former, I derive a theoretical model that examines a mechanism through which energy multinationals could forestall the hold-up problem, and test this model empirically. With respect to the latter, I investigate the effect socio-political conflict from non-state actors has on the performance of multinational corporations, as this could ultimately affect their ability to earn a return on their investment. My results provide empirical evidence that such risk from non-state actors is problematic for firms.
