Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the family's influence on the moral reasoning of adolescent first-time offenders. Specifically, this study explored the relationship between the adolescent's level of moral reasoning and the parent's level of moral reasoning; the parent's style of parenting; the level of family functioning; the adolescent's age; the adolescent's gender; and the family's socio-economic status. It was hoped that the research findings might be used in the development of adolescent crime prevention programs. Although this sample of adolescents demonstrated a significantly lower level of moral reasoning as compared with adolescents of the same age in the general population, there were no significant relationships found between the adolescents' moral reasoning level and the six variables. There were, however, statistically significant relationships between particular parenting styles and the level of family health. Discussion on these results, the study's limitations, and suggestions for future research were then presented. Book excerpt: The traditional production measure of moral judgment has been the Moral Judgment Interview (MJI), which uses hypothetical moral dilemmas to elicit moral judgment. However, the MJI dilemmas have been criticized as artificial and may not be entirely appropriate for children, certain cultures, and practical moral situations. This unique volume utilizes and evaluates a new production measure of moral judgment, the Sociomoral Reflection Measure -- Short Form (SRM-SF), which substitutes brief stimulus materials and evaluative questions for the moral dilemma technique. The authors report that the SRM-SF exhibits an impressive degree of reliability and validity and is quicker to administer and score than other available measures. To illustrate these findings, this book offers the resources needed for the assessment of the Kohlbergian stage of moral judgment using the SRM-SF. These resources include: an up-to-date review of research and theory, a group-administrable questionnaire, an efficient scoring manual, and self-training exercises in assessment. Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between young adults’ experienced socioeconomic status, parents’ religion and parenting style, and their moral development. For the purposes of this study, moral development was defined as the self-constructed sociocultural process by which individuals develop their beliefs about the appropriate way to interact with other people in their community. Morality was assessed based on the five central principles outlined in the original Moral Foundations Theory (MFT). Macromorality, which includes larger ethical values, was assessed through the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ). Micromorality, which includes every day decision-making, was assessed through the Everyday Moral Foundations Questionnaire (EMFQ). Socioeconomic status was assessed objectively (O-SES) through a demographics question about total income and subjectively assessed (S-SES) through the Young Adult Socioeconomic Scale (YASES), a measure written for this study. Participants included college freshman students recruited from the University of Hartford (159), University of Saint Joseph (7), Middlesex Community College (5), and Three Rivers Community College (3). Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, including the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ), Everyday Moral Foundations Questionnaire (EMFQ), Young Adult Socioeconomic Scale (YASES), Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), as well as a demographics questionnaire that included questions about religious perspectives. Results found significant correlations between Authoritarian parenting styles and the Loyalty and Authority domains of the EMFQ. Findings also suggested correlations between the Authoritative parenting styles and the Loyalty and Authority domains of the MFQ, as well as the Sanctity domains of the EMFQ. Objective Socioeconomic Status was negatively correlated with the Care domain of the MFQ. Placing higher importance on religion and frequency of religious activities were both associated with higher elevations on the Sanctity domain of the MFQ and EMFQ.

Book excerpt: Helicopter parenting (HP) is an emerging parenting style that has presented new challenges for higher education professionals in their efforts to guide college students in their development, such as moral development and growth. As a result, this dissertation study sought to investigate how such factors as maternal and paternal HP, moral judgment and reasoning (MJR), and drinking motives (DM) and how they relate to alcohol use experiences (AUE) among college students. Using a final sample of 260 college students, this study examined (1) the relationship among HP, MJR, and AUE and if maternal and/or paternal HP moderated the relationship between MJR and AUE; and (2) the relationship among the four DMs, MJR, and AUE and whether any of the four DMs moderated the relationship between MJR and AUE. To address these aims, hierarchical multiple regression (HMR) analyses were performed. Additionally, confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted to verify the factor structure of the HP measure used in this study. Results of the first set of HMR analyses revealed no significant relationship between either type of HP and MJR scores; similar results were found between MJR and AUE. However, these results did reveal a significant, albeit moderately weak, association between both types of HP and AUE. Similarly, the second set of HMR analyses showed that MJR was not significantly related to any of the drinking motives nor to AUE; however, all four drinking motives were significantly related to AUE. CFA analyses revealed that the indices of model fit for the one-factor structure tested generally met the acceptable levels for good model fit for the data. Implications, conclusions, and directions for future research are discussed.
