Book excerpt: "For postmenopausal women osteoporosis and fracture are a major threat to functional independence and quality of life that has the potential to precipitate the end of life. Calcium, vitamin D and exercise have been shown to increase bone density, reduce falls and prevent fractures. Studies have shown that personal knowledge of bone density has a positive influence on treatment interventions in postmenopausal women yet studies considering the personal knowledge of bone mineral density (BMD) testing on osteoporosis preventative behaviours (OPBs) are less clear. This paper evaluated the influence of education and knowing person knowledge of BMD testing on calcium intake and exercise of young postmenopausal women between the ages of 50-65 years of age."--P. 2.

Book excerpt: This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis in October 2004. This report focuses even more attention on the devastating impact osteoporosis has on millions of lives. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 2 million American men have osteoporosis, and another 12 million are at risk for this disease. Yet despite the large number of men affected, the lack of awareness by doctors and their patients puts men at a higher risk that the condition may go undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that one-fifth to one-third of all hip fractures occur in men. This second edition brings on board John Bilezikian and Dirk Vanderschueren as editors with Eric Orwoll. The table of contents is more than doubling with 58 planned chapters. The format is larger – 8.5 x 11. This edition of Osteoporosis in Men brings together even more eminent investigators and clinicians to interpret developments in this growing field, and describe state-of-the-art research as well as practical approaches to diagnosis, prevention and therapy. - Brings together more eminent investigators and clinicians to interpret developments in this growing field - Describes state-of-the-art research as well as practical approaches to diagnosis, prevention and therapy - There is no book on the market that covers osteoporosis in men as comprehensively as this book

Although traditionally considered to be a disease affecting the elderly, increased recognition that osteoporosis may have its foundation early in life has stimulated substantial research interest into factors which can influence skeletal development, including both genetic and lifestyle factors. This book provides a summary and integrative review of the current state of knowledge of factors that influence the development of bone health during childhood and adolescence. The focus is on the role of physical activity for optimizing bone development. Other relevant topics that are reviewed include the influence of genetics, nutrition, and hormonal factors on skeletal development. In addition, there are expert views on practical lifestyle strategies and guidelines that can be adopted to optimize bone health and prevent fractures during growth. The book provides an excellent source of recent information for exercise specialists, pediatricians, nutritionists, biomedical researchers, health promotion worker and public health professionals.

Book excerpt: Prevention of osteoporosis depends upon the identification of lifestyle factors that increase peak bone mass. We investigated the effects of calcium intake, weight bearing exercise (WBE), and strength training (ST) on total bone mineral content (TBMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in 22 female and 13 male United States Naval Academy Midshipmen (MIDN). Each received 4 dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scans to measure TBMC and spine and hip BMD during the 2.8 year study period. Calcium intake was estimated at baseline and follow- up using a food frequency questionnaire. Frequency of WBE was determined at each visit using a questionnaire. The female's TBMC was predicted by calcium intake at baseline (p

An assessment of the extent to which bone density assessment affects lifestyle change in postmenopausal women, especially concerning calcium intake and calcium-fortified food intake in postmenopausal women, is needed. Objectives . (1) investigate whether postmenopausal women's decision (based on personal decision and HCPs recommendation) to start or increase dietary calcium intake, and/or start or increase supplemental calcium are associated with bone mineral density (BMD) test results (and T-score categories), based on self report on questionnaires; (2) assess whether postmenopausal women's consumption of calcium-fortified foods differed one year following BMD screening, and were associated with T-score category. Conclusions . Our study showed that results of osteoporosis screening influences postmenopausal women's decisions to increase dietary and supplemental calcium intake. Calcium-fortified food intake one year after screening was lower in those with osteopenia compare to those with normal bone density levels. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is one of the most clinically relevant disabling chronic disease encountered in clinical practice. A common cause of osteoporosis is glucocorticoid excess, as glucocorticoids may increase bone resorption, inhibit bone formation, have indirect actions on bone by decreasing intestinal calcium absorption and induce hypercalciuria. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the effects of glucocorticoids on bone metabolism and structure and on the diagnosis and treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. It aims at providing updated information on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this often dramatic complication of glucocorticoid excess. Being one of the few publications completely devoted to glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis it will heighten the awareness of specialists who prescribe glucocorticoids of the clinical relevance of this treatment complication. 'Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis' is addressed to clinical experts as well as to general practitioners who will both benefit from the comprehensive and integrative view of the management of patients exposed to glucocorticoids.

Book excerpt: Study Design: Pre-test/post-test control group research design to test the effectiveness of an osteoporosis educational in-service program with female high school students. Background: Peak bone mass and density occur at critical critical periods primarily during adolescence. Girls developmentally start off with a lesser peak bone mass than boys and suffer more osteoporosis consquences as adult women. Purpose: To determine if adolescent girls who participate in an in-service educational program about osteoporosis and bone density development will have improved knowledge about osteoporosis and improved confidence in health behaviors for bone density development as well as improved bone-health lifestyle behaviors compared to adolescents who do not participate in an in-service educational program. Methods and Measures: Eighty four girls from two high schools in a north eastern city school district participated. One school was randomly determined as the treatment and the other as the control group. Pretests on knowledge, self-efficacy, calcium intake, and previous day physical activity were collected in the treatment and control groups. Two to three days after the initial testing, an educational in-service program about osteoporosis and osteoporosis prevention was presented to the treatment group during a 50-minute class-time block. Time was allowed for planned discussion and a calcium-rich snack. No educational in-service program was given to control group participants. Approximately a week after the educational in-service, the four test instruments were again given to all students. The differential effects of intervention vs. no intervention were determined using 2 x 2 analyses of variance. Seven dependent variables from the four test instruments were analyzed. Results: 1) Significant differences were found for the main effect of time and the main effect of group on all measures of the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test: total scores, exercise subscale scores, and calcium subscale scores. The scores were much higher at posttest for the treatment group while posttest scores remained similar to pretest scores for the control group. 2) Scores for improved confidence for conducting activities related to osteoporosis prevention were encouraging. While there were no main effects for group or time of testing, there was a significant interaction of the two. The treatment group showed significantly greater increases for self-efficacy from pretest to posttest compared to participant scores in the control group. 3) Although the interaction analyses for the behavioral tests were also significant, both for calcium consumption and metabolic equivalent task (MET) values of physical activity, performance trends did not exhibit patterns like that of the OKT and OSES, and may be misleading. Conclusion: An osteoporosis educational in-service can significantly improve overall knowledge in high school girls as well as their confidence for exercising and calcium consumption; however, it is not clear that an educational in-service alone is an adequate intervention to change nutrition or exercise lifestyle behaviors.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoporosis remains a major health issue worldwide. Although it has been associated with Caucasian women in the United States, attention is being drawn to other ethnicities. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are concerned that people perceive osteoporosis to only affect Caucasian women, given that African-American (AA) women have higher bone mineral density and lower postmenopausal bone loss. This perception ignores observations that AA women are at significant risk of developing osteoporosis. As such, there is considerable delay in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis among AA women. This cross-sectional study's design primary purpose was to describe postmenopausal AA women's knowledge, beliefs and behaviors concerning osteoporosis. Secondary to this purpose, was exploration of correlations between the Health Belief Model (HBM) theoretical constructs with osteoporosis preventive behavior, especially calcium intake and physical exercise. One hundred and fifty three postmenopausal AA women completed a questionnaire containing 1) the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT), 2) the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS), 3) the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale (OSES), 4) the Osteoporosis Attitude Knowledge Test (OAKT) and 5) the Osteoporosis Preventing Behaviors Survey (OPBS). The data were analyzed in SPSS version 21.0. The results of the study varied. Women in the study had greater knowledge about osteoporosis overall; they had less knowledge about preventing osteoporosis with exercise. They regularly used diet to prevent osteoporosis and reported recurrent physical activity. Participants had a general knowledge of osteoporosis but they experienced a moderate number of barriers that limited exercise. Few barriers for calcium intake were reported. Correlational analysis between age, number of months post-menopause, and education and the dependent variables (osteoporosis knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and barriers to engaging in bone health promotion activities) revealed significant correlations. Age and number of years post menopause were significantly negatively correlated with use of physical activity to prevent osteoporosis. As women aged, they engaged in less osteoporosis prevention using exercise and as the number of months post menopause increased, the exercise behaviors associated with osteoporosis prevention decreased. This is an indication that women at this age have to be educated on the importance of exercising at this stage in their life.
