Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among quality of life, dispositional optimism, social support and select personal characteristics of 40 community-dwelling elderly people. The theoretical framework used to guide this descriptive, correlational study was Carver and Scheier's (1981) behavioural model of self-regulation. The standardized questionnaires used to measure the primary variables were: Quality of Life Index (Ferrans & Powers, 1985), Life Orientation Test-Revised (Scheier, Carver, & Bridges, 1994), and Personal Resource Questionnaire 85 (Weinert & Brandt, 1987). The results provide support for the notion that optimism and satisfaction with social support are associated with greater quality of life. The relationship of self-rated health and depression to the primary variables has implications for practice. The results of the study provides some insight into factors influencing quality of life of community-dwelling elderly persons and provides a basis for further studies.

Book excerpt: The dramatically increasing aging population of Hong Kong has elicited new risks and opportunities to facilitate a positive life for older adults. This book offers a holistic review of gerontological theories and literature, and constructs a conceptual framework of social support networks, coping and positive aging. In light of the implications of the convoy model of social support to depict an indigenous landscape of positive aging in Hong Kong, this is one of the very few empirical studies that adopts both quantitative research and qualitative research. The research consisted of a pilot study of in-depth interviews with 16 older Hong Kong Chinese and a main study surveying 393 older members of District Elderly Community Center. The results of the study indicate that family and peer support constitute the mainstay of support networks of the elderly, and that family and peer support are associated with positive aging. Moreover, the study shows that it is the depth of emotional closeness, namely, close interaction and intimacy with social partners that makes the greatest contribution to positive aging. Additionally, problem coping and emotion coping are found to mediate the relationship between social support networks and positive aging. There is potential in bringing more domestic helpers into elderly care and improving the service quality such that the goal of Aging in Place can be promoted in Hong Kong. Intended for researchers in social work, gerontology and positive psychology, it is also essential reading for graduates and social work professionals interested in this area. This book makes a valuable contribution to social gerontological research among Hong Kong older adults and the promotion of wellbeing in the elderly via the construct of positive aging in the culture of Chinese society.

Prior research has shown that social support and stress can have significant impacts on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), particularly for older adults with chronic illness. The current study advanced the literature by addressing the relations of functional social support and perceived stress to HRQoL in relatively healthy older adults. Participants were 137 community-dwelling, adults with no major, self-reported chronic illness (Mean age = 55 years, 53% male; 84% White). It was hypothesized that both lower levels of self-reported social support and higher levels of self-reported perceived stress would be associated with lower ratings of self-reported mental and physical HRQoL (after accounting for relevant covariates). Stress buffering effects were also explored. Results revealed that there were no significant relations of social support, perceived stress, or their interaction to physical HRQoL. However, lower social support scores and higher perceived stress scores predicted significantly lower ratings of mental HRQoL (p's

Book excerpt: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between optimism, perceived social support and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and to examine a possible mediating role of perceived social support between optimism and HRQOL among mothers of children with cerebral palsy (CP). The theoretical framework was based on Lazarus and Folkman (1987): Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping (TTSC). Seventy seven mothers of children with CP who had attended and received treatment in different healthcare settings and community rehabilitation centres situated in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were recruited through purposive sampling. Optimism, perceived social support and HRQOL were assessed by the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and The Short Form-36® version two (SF-36v2®) Health Survey Questionnaire respectively. The results indicate that none of the hypotheses were supported: optimism did not correlate with HRQOL and perceived social support did not act as a mediator in this study. The issue of low sensitivity of LOT-R scale among Malaysian mothers of children with CP were highlighted. Several significant relationships between variables of the study and selected demographic variables were also identified. Some implications, limitations and future directions of research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between social engagement and quality of life among older adults living in the independent apartments of continuing care retirement communities (CCRC's). Data were drawn from the Erickson Life Study (Resnick et al., 2001; 2005), a five year panel study of 300 older adults living in four CCRC's. Quality of life is a multidimensional concept defined as older adults' "perceptions of their positions in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live, and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns" (Bonomi et al., 2000; WHOQoL Group, 1994). Components of social engagement included four types of giving and receiving social support and participation in formal social activities organized by the retirement community. A life course perspective guided the study which integrated a theory of psychosocial development (Erikson, 1950, 1982/1997), activity theory (Lemon, Bengston, & Peterson, 1972), social exchange theory (Dowd, 1975), and the proactivity model of successful aging (Kahana & Kahana, 1996, 2003; Kahana, Kelley-Moore, & Kahana, 2012). Findings from this dissertation research made several contributions to the literature. After living in senior housing for a year, receiving more informational and tangible support was associated with a poorer quality of life, yet participating in formal group activities was related to better quality of life. The longitudinal latent growth model uncovered individual differences in the initial status of quality of life, and showed that quality of life declined for the group over time. Factors that explained initial differences in quality of life included providing social support, gender, housing site, and quality of life before moving to the CCRC. One component of social engagement--participating in a greater number of formal social activities organized by the CCRC--slowed the rate of decline in quality of life over time. Findings suggest that active engagement in organized social and leisure activities can have a long-term beneficial effect for older adults by forestalling the decline of quality of life. Implications for gerontological social work practice and policy recommendations are discussed.

Book excerpt: The construct ‘‘quality of life (QoL)’’, since the 1980s, when it was introduced, is being used mainly in the context of health problems. Areas of one’s life that contribute to QoL are good physical and mental health, efficient cognitive functioning, social support, being able to meet the requirements of professional life, positive emotions, etc (Power, 2003). Work on subjective well-being (SWB), on the other hand, was developed in the context of healthy everyday life; it also has a history of more than 30 years. During this 30-year period factors that have an impact on SWB, such as SES, gender, health, age, and religiosity have been identified (Diener, 2000). A third independent line of research pertains to what has been called Positive Psychology (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000), that is, an emphasis on human strengths, such as optimism, hope, wisdom, positive emotions, resilience, etc., which contribute to positive functioning in life. Recently, SWB has been associated to human strengths and to the movement of positive psychology but this did not happen for QoL, possibly because of its emphasis on people with health problems. However, QoL can be conceived of as a generic term that pertains to all people, healthy or not. In this sense, it is closely related to SWB defined as happiness (Diener, 2000). Also, QoL encompasses positive emotions that go beyond happiness and has the advantage that it can be applied to many different domains of life such as interpersonal relations, health-related situations, and professional and educational strivings. Moreover, the mechanism(s) that underpin QoL and SWB can be studied in relation to people’s goals and strengths of character, that is, from a positive psychological perspective. Such a perspective can reveal the specificities of “quality” in the various domains of life and, specifically, the positive emotions and strengths that contribute to a happier, healthier, and more successful life, even in face of adversity. Therefore, despite the differences among the three theoretical traditions, namely QoL, SWB, and positive psychology, it is possible to find the common ground they share and each of them can benefit from notions developed in the others. The aim of the present book is to bring together these three traditions, show the interactions of variables emphasized by them, and give an integrative perspective from the positive psychology point of view. It also aims to extend the range of life situations in which one can look for quality and which go beyond the traditional emphasis of QoL on health problems. Thus, the content of the proposed book covers different age populations (from children to older adults), healthy and people facing health problems as well as people facing problems in their interpersonal lives or in their pursuits. It also discusses factors that contribute to marital satisfaction, well being in the school context, and things that people value and cherish. The chapters refer to notions such as happiness, interest, resilience, wisdom, hope, altruism, optimism, and spirituality/religiosity that represent unique human strengths. Finally, it emphasizes the role of goals and motivation that connect SWB with self-regulation and managing of one’s life priorities. To conclude, the chapters included in the proposed edited book aim at bringing to the fore new theoretical developments and research on QoL, SWB, and positive psychology that bridges previously distinct theoretical traditions. The proposed book covers a broad range of topics, addresses different theoretical interests and paves the way for a more integrative approach. Finally, it brings together an international set of authors, from USA, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
