Book excerpt: The Canadian Adverse Events Study (Baker, et al., 2004) revealed that the rate of adverse events in Canadian hospitals is 7.5 percent and almost 37% of these are preventable. Given these statistics, it is essential that healthcare organizations develop strategies and engage in leadership practices, which will address the complexity of healthcare processes and ensure that care is provided in a consistent, reliable manner in order to achieve the desired outcomes (Frankel, Gandhi & Bates, 2003). It is equally vital that leaders create supportive practice environments that promote a non-punitive culture of learning, continuous improvement, inter professional collaboration, and professional autonomy, thus engaging nurses in safe practice aimed at improving patient outcomes (Aiken, 2008; Pronovost et al., 2003). In order to understand how nursing leadership affects outcomes, it is important to assess what leadership behaviours are most effective in promoting a patient safety culture. This study tested a hypothetical model which predicted the influence of nurse manager Transformational Leadership behaviour on staff nurse perceptions of supportive practice environments, organizational citizenship behaviours, patient safety culture, job satisfaction and objective measures of selected nurse sensitive outcomes. Findings supported the hypothesized model 2 (df = 22) = 40.72, p = .008; CFI = .958; TLI = .916; RMSEA = .079; SRMR = .045 linking transformational leadership to nurse and patient outcomes through supportive practice environments, organizational citizenship behaviours, safety culture and job satisfaction. Nurse managers are accountable for 24-hour operations of their departments and influence patient outcomes. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationships among nurse manager transformational leadership practices, patient outcomes and hospital types (Magnet, On The Journey, and Non-Magnet). A correlational study examined relationships between self-reported transformational leadership practices of nurse managers and patient outcomes by hospital types. The study was conducted using a purposive sample of Association of California Nurse Leader membership database. In addition nurse managers at one San Diego based hospital participated in the study after IRB approval was received. The measurement tools utilized for this study include the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and an investigator designed demographic questionnaire. A One-Way ANOVA showed no statistically significant differences in transformational leadership practices of nurse managers among hospital types and patient outcomes. Levene's test confirmed that there were no differences in the mean variances between hospital types. The transformational leadership approach has been shown to have a positive impact on job satisfaction of staff nurses, resulting in improved relationships between staff nurses and managers and a strong desire to maintain membership in the organization. Book excerpt: Purpose: To determine evidence-based leadership behaviors that positively influence nurse managers' performance outcomes in the acute care setting. Design: Integrative literature review Methods: CINAHL and MEDLINE databases were searched 2004-2014 using "leadership behaviors of nurse managers", and "nurse manager performance outcomes" terms for research in English, peer-reviewed journals meeting this review's purpose. Findings: Ten studies support the use of transformational leadership behaviors by nurse managers to positively influence their performance outcomes. Conclusions: Strengthening nurse manager leadership skills will be a positive step in addressing the challenges of an emerging shortage of registered nurses. Relevance to Nursing Education: Findings are relevant in determining the needed content of nursing education to support nurse managers in becoming effective, transformational leaders.
