In the midst of a sea change in conceptions of the human person, the critics who wrote about Debussy's music in the Parisian press-continually returning to this music's nebulous relationship to sensation and sensibilité-attempted to articulate a music aesthetic appropriate to the fully embodied, material self of psychological modernism. While scholarship on French music in this period has often emphasized its affinities with other art forms, such as Impressionist painting and Symbolist poetry, Debussy's Critics demonstrates that a preoccupation with the specifically sonic materiality of Debussy's music, informed by late nineteenth-century scientific discourses on affect, perception, and cognition, was central to this music's historical intervention. Foregrounding the dynamic exchange between sounds and ideas, this book reveals the disorienting and bewildering experience of listening to Debussy's music, which compelled its early audiences to reimagine the most fundamental premises of the European art-music tradition.

Book excerpt: In 1880, Claude Debussy was recommended by his piano professor at the Paris Conservatory, Antoine Marmontel, to Madame Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck, one of the most enlightened representatives of the Moscow bourgeoisie and a patroness of Pyotr Tchaikovsky whose music she passionately admired. Debussy spent the three summers of 1880, 1881, and 1882 with von Meck's family as a piano instructor and a pianist for the trio in residence. His Russian trips as well as the World Expositions of 1889 and 1900 in Paris greatly contributed to Debussy's knowledge and appreciation of the Russian music of The Five. The composers of The Five: Milii Balakirev, Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov, Alexander Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, and Cesar Cui, made a collective contribution to the "Russian Style" designed to oppose the Western tradition in music. "Russian gestures," developed and established as essential in the style of The Five, are reflected in a number of Debussy's piano and vocal compositions. Some of the gestures did not have a lasting effect and gradually disappeared in later works; others remained and became essential features of Debussy's compositional writing.

This book reassesses the relationship between Debussy and Stravinsky, two of the most important composers of the early twentieth century. When the Russian composer traveled to France in 1910 to attend the premiere of his first ballet, The Firebird, he was invited to dine at the French composer's house, and a photo of the two commemorates the beginning of their friendship. Stravinsky was already acquainted with many of Debussy's earlier works, and Debussy was introduced to the Russian composer's first three ballets between 1910 and 1913. Stravinsky's early works contain Debussy-like passages, as in the opening measures of his opera The Nightingale, which echoes the opening measures of Debussy's "Nuages." As author Mark McFarland here shows, however, the adoption on Debussy's part of characteristics from Stravinsky's style is, perhaps surprisingly, no less substantial. Debussy borrowed motifs from both The Firebird and Petrushka as well as the Russian tradition of Leitharmony in his little-known ballet Khamma, and Stravinsky's ballets, including The Rite of Spring, seems to have sparked an exploration into octatonic harmony in Debussy's second book of piano preludes. McFarland's close analysis of parallel passages and usages in works of the two composers also reveals that Debussy eventually distanced himself from Stravinsky, perhaps fearing to seem like an acolyte rather than an innovator. His borrowings from Stravinsky (and Russian style) gradually disappear, as McFarland demonstrates by close attention to passages in some of the late works, which move in the direction of a neoclassicism that Stravinsky himself would soon adopt and expand further.
