Book excerpt: This research sought to identify the availability of digital technologies in public primary schools in Hail, Saudi Arabia and their use in teaching science subjects from the viewpoints of science teachers in the city. Another primary focus of this research was to address the applicability of TAM. A total of 330 Science teachers (145 males and 185 females) were drawn from a stratified sample randomly. Two instruments were developed to collect data; the first instrument was a self-developed checklist to profile the data related to the availability of digital technologies and facilities and the second instrument was a questionnaire adopted from three previous studies. The findings indicated an acute lack in the availability of digital technology facilities in all the primary schools surveyed, both boys' schools and girls'. Teachers' use of digital technologies in teaching and learning is influenced by several factors, namely schools' management support (MS), computer anxiety (CA) and enjoyment (E). The availability of digital technological facilities varied throughout the primary schools in Hail. Throughout the 12 digital technology facilities investigated in the study, only 4 were accessible in all the schools. This research would assert that management support (MS) and enjoyment (E) on Science teachers are positively correlated with perceived usefulness (PU) relative to digital technology usage. Moreover, it would further assert that (CA) on Science educators is negatively correlated to PE with regards to digital technology usage. The study found that the intention to use (IU) influenced Science teachers' actual use (AU) of digital technologies in primary schools. It was also found that perceived ease of use (PE) and enjoyment (E) influence Science teachers' intentions in making use of digital technologies in primary schools. But perceived usefulness (PU) seems to not influence Science teachers' intentions to apply digital technologies in primary schools. Science teachers are more likely to be concerned with the ease of use in digital technology and enjoyment in making decisions to use the technology for teaching, as opposed to how digital technology would facilitate better education and learning through their use. The research proposed an extension to the TAM model that accounts for the utilization of the unified model within the MS, CA, E, PE, PU, IU and AU contexts. The results showed that the TAM structure directly impacts the MS, CA, E, PE, PU, IU and AU contexts. These results demonstrate the success of the proposed extension in achieving the objectives of this study. This study will contribute to decision-making to disseminate digital technologies adoption among Science teachers in the primary schools and is beneficial to specialists in teacher training, and those in charge of their training in digital technologies.

Computer anxiety among preservice teachers is especially problematic because it reduces the effectiveness of computer education and leads to insufficient computer skills and confidence for teachers to integrate computer technology. This study focuses on the influence of sociocultural factors on computer anxiety in a select group of preservice teachers. Literature describing the sociocultural factors influencing computer anxiety using qualitative research methodology is limited. Sociocultural theory, first advanced by Vygotsky (1978), provided a framework for developing questions that focus on how sociocultural factors influence computer anxiety. Using case study research methodology, one main research question and three sub questions were examined: How are typical preservice teachers in a Midwestern metropolitan university with computer anxiety different from those with no computer anxiety and why?, (1) How do preservice teachers with computer anxiety compare to preservice teachers with no computer anxiety in life experiences and background in relation to computer use?, (2) What is the pattern in the background and experiences of computer use between students with and without computer anxiety? and (3) What sociocultural factors influence computer anxiety? Starting with a group of 115 preservice teachers and using criteria sampling, four cases were selected for further study, two with computer anxiety, and two with no computer anxiety. The cases were studied using interviews, field observations, and student journals. The results were reviewed for each using a map of computer learning experience within sociocultural environment. The experiences were grouped into four clusters of sociocultural environments: home, school, peers, and others. A cross-case analysis was completed, comparing the two cases with no computer anxiety to the two cases with computer anxiety. Distinctions between the cases with no computer anxiety and the cases with computer anxiety were detailed and possible explanations provided. The study presents evidence that cases with no computer anxiety and those with computer anxiety have differences that appear to be related to differences in social resources within the sociocultural environment of computing. Further study is needed to understand how such social factors are created and maintained and their long range effect.

Book excerpt: The study of individual, affect-related consequences from technology adoption and use is gaining traction in the information systems (IS) discipline. Efforts to explore affective reactions to technology have considered various positive, affective constructs (e.g., enjoyment, computer playfulness, and flow), with a more recent focus on the dark side of technology use and constructs such as technostress, technophobia, and computer anxiety. While some research has examined these negative affective responses to technology, construct definitions and relationships are not well-defined or theoretically grounded. A recent theoretical advance in IS, the Affective Response Model (ARM) categorizes affective responses to technology based on five dimensions. This three-paper dissertation explores negative affective responses to technology by (1) synthesizing the IS literature through the application of ARM, (2) proposing new affective concepts, and (3) theorizing about and testing the relationships between relevant antecedents and outcomes of these affective responses. In paper one, an integrative literature review is conducted on computer anxiety, technophobia and technostress, the main negative affective concepts in the IS literature. The known antecedents, dimensions, and outcomes of each concept are organized into nomological networks. These nomological networks are then combined to identify inconsistencies and omissions in the literature. Further, the ARM taxonomy is applied to differentiate the three constructs and to introduce technology-induced state anxiety (TISA), a new temporal (state-like) negative response to a specific instance of technology. Two empirical studies are conducted using existing and newly developed scales, and demonstrate that computer anxiety, technophobia, technostress and TISA are conceptually and empirically distinct, laying a foundation for further exploration of how these constructs are related. In paper two, much of the integrated nomological network from paper one is tested in the context of a laboratory experiment with a spreadsheet application. The relationship between computer anxiety, technostress and TISA is explored in more depth with the mediating influence of technostress on TISA proposed and confirmed. ARM is further extended in two ways (1) by demonstrating the impact of the characteristics of the task/organizational context, a new category of antecedents identified from paper one, and (2) connecting affective responses to computing performance outcomes (e.g. satisfaction with performance, expected future performance, and an objective measure of task accuracy). Finally, this paper concludes by evaluating how the relationship between antecedents, affective responses and performance outcomes may change with system experience. The laboratory experiment is repeated after six weeks of regular system usage to test whether the strong influence of TISA observed at time 1 diminishes as expected. In paper 3, the research model from paper 2 is expanded by integrating positive affective concepts. It is known that positive and negative concepts are distinct and individuals can experience high levels of both positive and negative affect at the same time. Therefore, ARM is further extended by demonstrating the practical and theoretical importance of considering both positive and negative affective responses. This paper explores the domain of a less structured creative task, employing a laboratory experiment in which participants design a flyer. Computer anxiety, technostress and TISA are measured alongside enjoyment, and two newly proposed concepts, technomancy and computer enthusiasm. The unique impact of these positive and negative affective responses on performance outcomes is demonstrated. Lastly, the intervention effect of a positive mood is evaluated experimentally. Participants in a positive mood prior to working on the design task experienced more enjoyment. Those assigned a more difficult task and a less usable technology also experienced less TISA due to being in positive mood state. Positive mood also had a helpful indirect effect on performance outcomes. The findings from the three dissertation papers have important theoretical and practical implications. A major IS theoretical framework is meaningfully applied to negative affective concepts and extended. Second, this work offers more detailed explanation of what antecedents influence certain affective concepts more, building on the omnibus and reciprocal propositions in ARM. Third, this work formally connects affective responses to computing performance outcomes. Lastly, the added benefit of considering positive concepts side-by-side with negative concepts is demonstrated. Focusing on the dark side alone is both theoretically incomplete and practically misleading. There are also important implications for practitioners. It is shown that minimizing TISA is especially critical in the early stages of using a system, as TISA is the affective concept driving performance outcomes the most at that time. This idea holds true for both structured computing tasks and less structured, creative tasks. Also, establishing a positive mood prior to engaging with the system heightens the enjoyment experienced and reduces TISA under very challenging situations, for instance when the technology is less usable and task requirements are high. This finding confirms that a positive mood can be a positive balancing force to negative affect, indirectly preserving performance outcomes. Finally, the concluding chapter of this dissertation discusses several future research directions that build on this work.

Many schools today provide personal computers not only to older students, but also in primary school. There is little credible evidence on how one-to-one (1:1) computer programs affect learning outcomes among younger pupils. We investigate how 1:1 computer technology impacts student performance in primary school in Sweden, using data from an expansion of 1:1 programs that took place before the pandemic. Using a staggered difference-in-differences design, we examine impacts on student performance on standardized tests in language and math in 6th grade. We find no important effects on these learning outcomes on average, but a positive effect on test scores in Swedish and English among students with highly educated parents. Moreover, the results indicate a positive effect in Swedish in schools that received additional financial support for implementing 1:1 technology. Nevertheless, all positive impacts in subgroups appear to be rather small, amounting to 0.01-0.03 SD per semester of 1:1 exposure.

Evidence to prove devices for each student are beneficial is severely lacking, yet many schools across the United States have adopted the one-to-one program, providing either a tablet, laptop, or other device for every student. This study reports the perception of business and technology teachers regarding the technology aptitude of students in grades 6-12. The primary aim was to answer this question: Does the assumption of technical knowledge in digital natives lead to a demonstrated skill gap for today's students? In context, digital natives is a term coined by Mark Prensky for individuals who have only lived in a world of digital media. The participants were six business and technology teachers from the Midwest. Three teachers were junior high teachers and three were high school teachers. This qualitative research data was collected via one-on-one virtual interviews. The results indicate that by junior high, students use technology in the classroom regularly, yet students are displaying skill gaps such as inefficiencies in use of the keyboard and time management, overconfidence in multitasking, and even deficiencies in morals such as cheating. Further research is needed to confirm the results and to identify other factors that could strengthen the effectiveness of these campaigns.

Traditionally, it has been observed that developers and procurers of technological resources could rely on authority to ensure that technology was used, which is true in many industrial and organizational contexts. However, with the increasing demands for educational applications of information technology and changing working practices, there is s need to re-examine user acceptance issues as they emerge within and outside of the contexts in which technology was implemented. This is true in the education milieu where teachers exercise the autonomy to decide on what and how technology will be used for teaching and learning purposes. Although they are guided by national and local policies to use technology in the classrooms, teachers spent much of their planning time to consider how technology could be harnessed for effective lesson delivery and assessment to be conducted.
