The purpose of this study was to determine whether a dynamic-stretching warm up (DWU) intervention performed daily over four weeks positively influenced power, speed, agility, endurance, flexibility, and strength performance measures in collegiate wrestlers when compared to a static-stretching warm up (SWU) intervention. Methods. Subjects were 24 male National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I wrestlers from the University of Wyoming. A four-week treatment condition (DWU) and active control condition (SWU) was introduced into the wrestlers' daily pre-season workouts. Anthropometric and performance measures were evaluated at baseline and post-intervention: peak torque of the quadriceps and hamstrings, medicine ball underhand throw for distance, 300-yard shuttle, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, broad jump, 600-meter run, sit-and-reach test, and trunk extension test. Results. Following the DWU intervention, several performance measure improvements were observed. The DWU showed positive increases in performance among peak torque of the quadriceps (11%), broad jump (4%), medicine ball underhand throw for distance (4%), sit-ups (11%), and push-ups (3%). There was a decrease in average time to completion of the 300-yard shuttle (2%) and the 600-meter run (2.4%) which is suggestive of enhanced muscular strength and endurance and anaerobic capacity in the DWU group. Neither the DWU nor the SWU influenced peak torque of the hamstrings, flexibility of the hamstrings or trunk, nor muscular endurance of the arms and shoulder girdle. In contrast to the DWU intervention, there was no observed improvement in the SWU group for peak torque of the quadriceps, broad jump, 300-yard shuttle run, medicine ball underhand throw for distance, sit-ups, push-ups or 600-meter run. Conclusion. Our findings suggest that incorporation of this specific four-week DWU into the daily training regimen of wrestlers produced longer term or chronic performance enhancements in regards to power, strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic capacity, and acceleration.

Book excerpt: The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate modalities used as components of pre event/training preparation, to try to develop an optimal preparation strategy for sports performers. It concentrates on the stretch modalities commonly used by athletes as part of a warm-up designed to prepare them for subsequent performance. Past literature suggests that static stretching as part of a warm-up leads to a decrease in performance when compared to an active warm-up or a warm-up including dynamic stretches. Not surprisingly this has led to a movement away from static to dynamic stretches by many athletes. The presented publications were conducted to clarify a number of issues raised by past research studies. A lack of ecologically valid studies is apparent; the static stretch protocols used in most of the early research in this area has failed to explore what sports performers actually use as part of their training, while there was a lack of research examining the effect of dynamic stretches on performance. Of particular relevance is the lack of research looking at the mechanisms behind the changes in performance linked to warm-ups incorporating dynamic stretches. Therefore, this group of publications attempts to systematically examine the effects on performance of manipulating the stretch component of an active warm-up, while exploring the potential mechanisms linked to any changes in performance. The general findings of this series of papers provides evidence that static stretches, as part of an active warm-up, are linked to a decrease in the acute performance of a range of physical capabilities; including sprint, agility, jump and maximal force output. The mechanisms behind these performance changes are multifaceted, with decreases in core temperature and heart rate, decreases in musculotendinous unit stiffness and a decrease in muscular activity, when compared to a general active warm-up established. In contrast when a dynamic stretch replaces the static stretch component and is incorporated within a warm-up, performance is enhanced when compared to an active warm-up. The mechanisms behind this seem to be less temperature related and more closely linked to the neuro-muscular system. Greater muscular activity is linked to dynamic stretches, causing an increase in peak force and rate of force development, compared to an active warm-up protocol. This effect seems to be enhanced the faster and more specific the dynamic stretches are to the chosen performance measure, while combining static stretches with dynamic stretches as part of a preparation strategy still leads to decreases in performance compared to an active warm-up combined with dynamic stretches. In conclusion, to maximise acute maximal performance in sports specific motor skills, an active warm-up combined with specific dynamic stretches is recommended to sports performers and coaches.

Book excerpt: Research suggests that moderate to high intensity dynamic warm up exercises can enhance the excitability of the fast twitch muscle fibers through Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP), and prime them to play a greater role during jumping and sprinting. The purpose of this study was to determine if VertiMax jumps executed at the end of a normal dynamic exercise warm up will signifcantly improve short term athletic performance. Twenty participants were randomly placed in one of 5 groups for the duration of the study. The subjects performed one of the following warm-ups determined by random selection: dynamic warm-up (DW) or a dynamic warm up plus VertiMax jumps (DWV). On Day 2 all the subjects participated in the opposite warm-up routine then what they performed on Day 1. Each session concluded with vertical jump and lane agility testing. No significant difference from DW to DWV for vertical jump was found [t(19) = 1.242, p > .05]. No significant difference from DWLA to DWVLA was found [t(19) = 1.082, p> .05]. The mean on the DWVVERT was 26.13 inches (sd=4.37), and the mean on the DWVERT was 25.83 inches (sd=4.55). The mean on the DWVLA was 11.03 seconds (sd = .77) and the mean on the DWLA was 11.13 seconds (sd = .65). It was concluded that a warm-up that includes a high intensity activity at the end of a dynamic warm up does not improve vertical jump or agility greater than dynamic warm up alone.

Seventy two subjects (38 males, 34 females) performed static stretching (SS), dynamic stretching (OS), self-myofascial release with a foam roller (FR), and no warm-up prior (C) to the sit and reach test (SR), vertical jump (VJ), and standing broad jump (SBJ). Outcome measurements included SR measurement, VJ height, and SBJ distance. Data was analyzed using a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance. The difference in pre and post warm-up SR measurements were statistically significant (p = 0.000) following SS, OS, and FR in comparison to C. There were no significant effects in VJ height (p = 0.995), or in SBJ length following any of the warm-up protocols (p = 0.820). It was concluded that SS, OS, and FR have no acute effects on jump performance, but may increase low back and hamstring flexibility.

The goal of this study was to investigate how a general cycling warm-up, a dynamic stretching routine, a static stretching routine, and the combination of both static stretching followed by cycling and dynamic stretching followed by cycling affect WAnT performance. Ten recreationally active subjects, completed five WAnT on a Monark Ergomedic 984E cycle separated by at least 48 hours. Subjects were randomly assigned to an order of conditions and performed a different condition prior to each WAnT. The warm-up protocols consisted of static stretching protocol, dynamic stretching protocol, a cycling protocol, and the combination of both static stretching followed by cycling and dynamic stretching followed by cycling. Peak anaerobic power, mean anaerobic power, power drop, and percent fatigue were calculated following the completion of all five conditions. No significant statistical differences were found among the five conditions for any of the four measurements. In conclusion, various stretching and active warm-up methods prior to the WAnT did not increase or inhibit performance.

Book excerpt: The evidence for performance decrements with prolonged static stretching (SS)(>60s per muscle group) has led to a paradigm shift in optimal stretching routines within a full warm-up protocol. Many athletic teams and individuals have now incorporated dynamic stretching (DS) and dynamic activity (DA) rather than SS into their pre-exercise warm-up routines. However, much of the previous research examining SS did not incorporate all three components of a full warm-up protocol (aerobic, SS and DS/DA activity). Based on previous literature, the objective of the present study was to compare differing durations of SS (30, 60, and 120 seconds per muscle group or a control condition with no SS) within in a full warm-up protocol on various testing measures. Sixteen male participants (Sixteen males; 27.6 ± 2.15 years, 187.1 ± 15.3 lb. and 181.9 ± cm) with an athletic background and at least 2 years of strength and endurance training experience completed four conditions, each condition included a prior submaximal 5-minute aerobic warm-up on a cycle ergometer, one of the four SS interventions (0, 30, 60 or 120s per muscle group) and a subsequent DS/DA component. Results of the present study serve as evidence that prolonged durations of SS (SS 120s) per muscle group, even with the inclusion of a DS/DA component can impair subsequent performance in vertical jump height, force production and rate of force production, evoked contractile properties and potentiated twitch forces, and the interpolated twitch technique. Results also show that ROM continues to increase immediately following each of the three components within the warm-up (aerobic, SS and DS/DA) in all conditions.
