It is shown that KIc values determined in accordance with the present ASTM Tenative Method of Test for Plane Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399-70T) can vary moderately within the specimen size and geometric limitations imposed by the Test Method. The magnitude of these variations will depend on the material properties and would be increased by relaxation of the size requirements.

Book excerpt: A test program has been conducted to determine the influence of geometrical variables on the ability of the notch bend and single-edge-notch tensile tests to measure valid plane strain fracture toughness value. Data were obtained on 2024-T851 aluminum, D6AC steel heat treated to yield strength values of 208 and 247 ksi, and 6A1-4V titanium. The results indicated that in the bend test four-point loading produced more reproducible values than three-point loading. Fracture toughness values were valid when the major span length-to-width ratio was equal to or greater than four and the crack length-to-width ratio was between 0.20 and 0.40. The single-edge-notch produced less variability than the notch bend test and in general, the point at which the onset of slow crack growth occurred was more easily defined. Valid fracture toughness values were obtained using the existing calibration curves in specimens where the crack length-to-specimen width ratio was between 0.20 and 0.40. (Author).

Book excerpt: A new study of the effect of specimen size on the results of plane-strain fracture toughness tests of a relatively tough aluminum alloy, 2219-T851, suggests that an increase in specimen size requirements may be necessary to assure size-independent test results. Specifically, it appears that the crack length limit should be increased to 5(KIc/?YS)2, which has the effect of keeping the maximum nominal net-section stress below two thirds of the yield strength. The current limit on thickness could be maintained at 2.5 (KIc/?YS)2, although there is some evidence that it might be relaxed further. Additional work is needed to check the generality of these suggestions for other materials, as well as the possibility that if W/B=2 and a=B ? 5(KIc/?YS)2, Kmax, may be useful as an engineering estimate of KIc.

Book excerpt: The influence of work hardening exponent on the variation of fracture toughness with material thickness was studied for high strength steel, aluminum, and titanium alloys. A variety of materials could be compared by employing normalizing parameters to represent the toughness in terms of the relative plastic zone size and representing the relationship on a logarithmic plot. Using this method the normalized fracture toughness parameter in the region of 100% slant fracture was proportional to the square of the work hardening exponent for the body-centered cubic metals. In the fracture mode transition region, however low work hardening was beneficial and the thickness at which the transition occurred decreased as the work hardening exponent increased. The influence of work hardening exponent on cyclically-induced crack growth rates in AISI 4340 steel and 13V-11Cr-3A1 titanium was also evaluated. In the steel the growth rate was slightly less for the material with the lower work hardening exponent while the titanium exhibited so significant trend as a function of work hardening characteristics. The specimen thickness had the greatest effect on the cyclically-induced crack growth with decreased growth rates present in the thicker specimens. Attempts were also made to control the process zone size by adding zirconia particles to a high strength steel matrix through powder metallurgy techniques.
