Book excerpt: Award-winning Amarillo Globe-News columnist David Horsley is back with another collection of his personal essays from the newspaper. This time David's readers have selected over 100 of his best columns on topics ranging from the humorous to the serious to the sublime. Here are light-hearted favorites such as Chaw McCuddy's review of violinist Itzhak Perlman, David's encounter with a feral cat named Osama and the women who defended it, The Colonoscopy Chronicles, the true story of a black bra and how it inflamed readers' imaginations, and fantasies such as the Magnetron an imaginary device for disabling loud car stereos. Serious subjects close to David's heart proved popular with readers as well, such as his reflections on the death of his father and the tragedy of the space shuttle Columbia. Included are essays about parenting, computers, handguns, and a requiem for Gus the dog. Topics of global significance are treated as well: 9/11, war, terrorism, and homelessness. David writes honestly about religion and politics in this volume, examining the proper role of critical thinking in religion and exploring the implications of public prayer. This book will have you laughing one minute and crying the next, which might be why Texas Panhandle readers voted him Amarillo's most popular newspaper columnist.

Book excerpt: The Bloody Tower by John Rhode, also published as The Tower of Evil “Any murder planned my Mr. Rhode is bound to be ingenious.”—The Observer The old man dragged his dilapidated chair to the window. With difficulty, he slowly extended a gnarled, shaking hand and pointed toward a distant, formless bulk outlined against the sunset. “The tower still stands,” he said in a high-pitched, quivering voice, which seemed to conceal a note of triumph. Strange words from a man who has just been told that his eldest son lies dead, killed by the inescapable explosion of his own shotgun. To be sure, the body had been found near the tower, but what could be the significance of this ungainly structure that the old man should mention it so mysteriously? Could the key exist within the old letter bearing biblical citations alongside a cipher of odd, hand-drawn shapes? Subsequent developments draw Jimmy Waghorn and Inspector Hanslet far from the actual crime scene in their search for the murderer. When they finally bring their theory to that intrepid scientist-detective, Dr. Priestley, he offers a strangely enigmatic suggestion which throws new light on the case and sets them on the track of an amazing discovery. “There are times when I think he is the finest detective story writer of them all.”—The Manchester Evening Star “He must hold the record for the invention of ingenious ways of taking life.”—The Sunday Times “It is the soundness of his method that keeps him in the front rank of detective story artists.”—The London News

Book excerpt: Bilingual texts have been left outside the mainstream of both translation theory and literary history. Yet the tradition of the bilingual writer, moving between different sign systems and audiences to create a text in two languages, is a rich and venerable one, going back at least to the Middle Ages. The self-translated, bilingual text was commonplace in the mutlilingual world of medieval and early modern Europe, frequently bridging Latin and the vernaculars. While self-translation persisted among cultured elites, it diminished during the consolidation of the nation-states, in the long era of nationalistic monolingualism, only to resurge in the postcolonial era. The Bilingual Text makes a first step toward providing the fields of translation studies and comparative literature with a comprehensive account of literary self-translation in the West. It tracks the shifting paradigms of bilinguality across the centuries and addresses the urgent questions that the bilingual text raises for translation theorists today: Is each part of the bilingual text a separate, original creation or is each incomplete without the other? Is self-translation a unique genre? Can either version be split off into a single language or literary tradition? How can two linguistic versions of a text be fitted into standard models of foreign and domestic texts and cultures? Because such texts defeat standard categories of analysis, The Bilingual Text reverses the usual critical gaze, highlighting not dissimilarities but continuities across versions, allowing for dissimilarities within orders of correspondence, and englobing the literary as well as linguistic and cultural dimensions of the text. Emphasizing the arcs of historical change in concepts of language and translation that inform each case study, The Bilingual Text examines the perdurance of this phenomenon in Western societies and literatures.

Book excerpt: The cannonade of Valmy (1792) ranks as one of the most significant battles of all time for its strategic results: the defeat of the Prussian invasion heralded the beginning of the French Republic. At the field of Waterloo in 1815, no less a battle ended once and for all the ambitions of Napoleon to dominate Europe under French hegemony. Throughout this period of strife and struggle, which would change the map of Europe forever, Capitaine François fought under the banners and eagles of France, a callow youth at the time of Valmy, a grizzled veteran by the time of Waterloo. His story stretches from the plains of Northern France, through the frozen wastes of Russia, the sunburnt sands of Egypt and to the rotting prisoner hulks of Spain. François was by his own account a ruthless, fearless fighter but tempered with a passionate and phlegmatic nature; of the many memoirs of Napoleon’s troops, few are filled with such adventure and anecdote. An excellent from the ranks of Napoleon’s army. Author — Capitaine Charles François (1774 or 5-1853.) Preface — Jules Arsène Arnaud Claretie (1840-1913.) Translator — Robert B. Douglas Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in 1906, London, by Everett and Co. Original Page Count – 332 pages.
