Book Synopsis The Giving Tree by : Shel Silverstein
Download or read book The Giving Tree written by Shel Silverstein and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Book Synopsis The Mother and Her Child (Classic Reprint) by : William S. Sadler
Download or read book The Mother and Her Child (Classic Reprint) written by William S. Sadler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother and Her Child The larger part Of the work was originally written by Dr. Lena K. Sadler, with certain chapters by Dr. William S. Sadler, but in the revision and re-arrangement of the manuscript so much work was done by each on the contributions of the other, that it was deemed best to bring the book out under joint author ship. The book is divided into three principal parts: Part I, deal ing with the experience of pregnancy from the beginning of expectancy to the convalescence of labor; Part II, dealing with the infant from its first day of life up to the weaning time; Part III, taking up the problems of the nursery from the weaning to the important period of adolescence. The advice given in this work is that which we have tried out by experience - both as parents and physicians - and we pass it on to mothers, fathers, and nurses with the belief that it will be of help in their efforts at practical and scientific child culture. We believe, also, that the expectant mother will be aided and encouraged in bearing the burdens which are common to motherhood by the advice and instruction offered. While we have drawn from our own professional and per sonal experience in the preparation of this book, we have also drawn freely from the present-day literature dealing with the subjects treated, and desire to acknowledge our indebtedness to the various writers and authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Baby: A Concise and Practical Guide for the Use of Mothers in the Care and Feeding of Infants and Young Children The acute infectious diseases (diphtheria, scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles, etc.) have not been mentioned because they are, without exception, conditions which should be treated by a physician. In case of sickness, no mother or nurse should depend upon any book in caring for a baby, but upon the advice of a physician, who should be one well trained and experlenced in diseases peculiar to children. If a baby is sick, the physician ought to be summoned at once; and in no case should a mother attempt to prescribe for her child - disregard of this rule has caused thousands of lives to be lost. This book is not intended to supplant or to be a substitute for the physician; therefore prescrip tions have not been given. In this way the country hopes, in time of war, to be prepared with efficient men to protect its inhabitants and their homes. Book Synopsis Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea by : O. H. Peters
Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Babies: A Guide to the Practical Care of the Mother and Young Child I feel it is due my readers to explain why I have written better babies. Of course, my basic reason for so doing is my ever-pres ent desire to see a world filled only with bet ter babies, and toward that end I have worked for years, devoting myself almost exclusively to the treatment of infants and young children. I felt that the medical profession would never fully perform any real service for humanity until the diseases of children were given the universal care, attention, and interest which they merit.
