Understanding and striving for happiness while living with that pain is a personal endeavour. This story explores Marla's journey of childhood trauma, how a 'normal' life may not be as normal as it seems, and how one person's reality can be very different from another's. Acknowledging the existence of problems is the first step towards healing.

Stine, author of Goosebumps "Do you know what it feels like to be forgotten?"On a cold winter night, Iris and her best friend, Daniel, sneak into a clearing in the woods to play in the freshly fallen snow. There, Iris carefully makes a perfect snow angel -- only to find the crumbling gravestone of a young girl, Avery Moore, right beneath her.Immediately, strange things start to happen to Iris: She begins having vivid nightmares. She wakes up to find her bedroom window wide open, letting in the snow. She thinks she sees the shadow of a girl lurking in the woods. And she feels the pull of the abandoned grave, calling her back to the clearing...Obsessed with figuring out what's going on, Iris and Daniel start to research the area for a school project. They discover that Avery's grave is actually part of a neglected and forgotten Black cemetery, dating back to a time when White and Black people were kept separate in life -- and in death. As Iris and Daniel learn more about their town's past, they become determined to restore Avery's grave and finally have proper respect paid to Avery and the others buried there. But they have awakened a jealous and demanding ghost, one that's not satisfied with their plans for getting recognition. One that is searching for a best friend forever -- no matter what the cost. The Forgotten Girl is both a spooky original ghost story and a timely and important storyline about reclaiming an abandoned segregated cemetery."A harrowing yet empowering tale reminding us that the past is connected to the present, that every place and every person has a story, and that those stories deserve to be told." -- Renee Watson, New York Times bestselling author of Piecing Me Together

Book excerpt: This volume represents a collection of life histories of women who live in rural Haryana. It looks at the impact of the 73rd Amendment to India’s constitution, which introduced reservations in the political arena for women. The Panchayati Raj Act of 1992 reserved one third of all Sarpanch positions for women, and granted constitutional status to the Panchayat system, outlining its specific functions and jurisdiction. This book enhances existing scholarship on the impact of these changes in that it provides the opportunity for women Sarpanches from Haryana to speak for themselves and reflect upon their journey. Ten elected women Sarpanches share their stories about their lives, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. Their life histories address the following questions: Who are these women who agreed to run for a reserved seat in the elections? What motivated them? Why were they asked to run? What barriers do they face? Do they feel they are making a difference? Indeed, these stories reflect the lived realities of the women impacted by the changes in legislation.

Book excerpt: This book encompasses a wide range of human experiences, delving into mystical encounters, dreams, altruism, hard work, teamwork, cultural misunderstandings, amusing anecdotes, misconceptions, success, failure, happiness, and poignant tales of four Hizmet affiliated high school graduates and teachers in Indonesia. They sowed the seeds of successful education and eventually departed from Indonesia. Contrary to the claims of some scholars, they do not belong to a Sufi Order nor can they be classified as traditionalists, although they exhibit characteristics that may align with both. Instead, they can be aptly described as modern dervishes. The book's title, The Stories of Modern Dervishes in Indonesia: Tolong, is derived from the true account of three orphan students whom modern dervishes rescued from the aftermath of a tsunami. If I were to read these stories without conducting on-site research, it would be difficult to believe them. Readers will undoubtedly find this book engrossing and captivating.

Book excerpt: What drove me to spend months doing nothing else but researching and writing the stories on women crisis? Writing is my passion I can’t live without writing and reading. Most of the time, I used to spend on reading different books, writing and researching. Being a girl, I felt the pain of women and girls. It has urged me to write on it. My purpose of writing this book is to enlighten 21st century, women and girls issues which are still common that were in the dark era before Islam or another words in the dark age. Women are most of the vulnerable groups that we simply can not ignore. Here I would highlight the factors that only reason low self-esteem among women of Pakistan. The biggest factor in this regard is education. Most women have no access to free medical source and guidance. Women are less likely to take to hospitals than men in times of emergency. They are house wives and do not have any source of income. They have no say in taking key family decision. She usually suffers from violence, torture discrimination, brutality at the hands of male members in their family. Also outside home there are so many factors that can be counted on finger tips. Some 80539 women were victims of violence in 2011 - the violence includes murder, rape, suicide, torture, and killing in the name of honor. 13% of which were under 15 years old. I had chance to be in interaction with women and girls, either they could be from remote areas or from metorpolitians. I knew very well the problems of women that had become common in our society not from the independence of Pakistan but since Adam’s era. So many time I heard that we are living in21st century where in use of technology is quite common. Everyone use of it therefore the life style has been changed. No doubt, technological inventions have made living convenient. Connecting with people in different parts of the world, traveling long distance, having constant sources of entertainment and ease of cooking and storing food are some of the best things technology has offered us. But is technology really a boon to the mankind ? I don’t think so ! I observed 21st century woman still in the pain! Woman sufferings belong tnot only to Pakistan but entire world woman is in the trauma. In October 2013, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, stated that millions of girls are still being denied an education. Why is it that women in the 21st century are still not given their basic human rights? The effects of pooression are seen in mine researched very controversial short stories. How badly still in 21st century women and girls are still facing plethora of Problems in the stereotyped Society !

Book excerpt: In the rapidly evolving world of education, the role of societal expectations on schoolgirls remains a subject of profound importance. The perception that we have made substantial progress in gender equality is a half-truth that overlooks the deeply ingrained cultural, societal, and economic challenges many young girls in India still face today. As I set out to write this book, "Shadows of Expectation: The Unseen Struggles of School Girls in Modern India," my primary aim was to shed light on these often-overlooked narratives—the real, raw stories of girls across different regions of India who, despite the modern age, continue to battle the invisible chains of tradition, expectation, and societal pressure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the majority of the world's population lives in a country with falling marriage rates, a phenomenon with profound impacts on women, gender, and sexuality. In this exceptionally crafted ethnography, Sarah Lamb probes the gendered trend of single women in India, examining what makes living outside of marriage for women increasingly possible and yet incredibly challenging. Featuring the stories of never-married women as young as 35 and as old as 92, this book offers a remarkable portrait of a way of life experienced by women across class and caste divides. For women in India, complex social-cultural and political-economic contexts are foundational to their lives and decisions, and remaining unmarried is often an unintended consequence of other pressing life priorities. Arguing that never-married women are able to illuminate their society's broader social-cultural values, Lamb offers a new and startling look at prevailing systems in India today. "This pathbreaking book offers a vital analysis of the rising but unrecognized category of single women in a marriage-minded society such as India. Through beautifully rendered and diverse stories, Sarah Lamb challenges conventional wisdom." -MARCIA C. INHORN, William K. Lanman, Jr. Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs, Yale University "For fans of Lamb's evocative narratives on Bengali widows, her new book provides another rich look at the negative space of marriage: the rare demographic of single women in Bengal across class and caste." -SRIMATI BASU, author of The Trouble with Marriage: Feminists Confront Law and Violence in India "This lively ethnographic account makes several key contributions to feminist anthropological appraisals of marriage as an institution. Lamb renders a compelling, detailed, and sensitive portrait of compulsory heterosexuality and patriliny as seen from the margins." -LUCINDA RAMBERG, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Cornell University.
