Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Individual in the Animal Kingdom Certain criticisms have convinced me that some explanation of the scope of this book will here not be out of place. The task I have attempted in the following pages is a two-fold one. First, I have tried to frame a general definition of the Individual, sufficiently objective to permit of its application by the man of science, while at the same time admitted as accurate (though perhaps regarded as incomplete) by the philosopher. Secondly, I have tried to show in what ways Individuality, as thus defined by me, manifests itself In the Animal Kingdom. I wish here to point out in general, that the failure of one of these aims does not preclude the success of the other; and, in particular, this - it is possible that the philosophically-minded will quarrel with my definition of the Individual (p. 28) as a continuing whole with inter-dependent parts (to put it at its baldest). But even if he denies that the definition applies to the Individual, he must, I think, admit that it does apply to something, and to something which plays a very important part in the organic world. He will, I believe, after reading the subsequent chapters, be brought to see that every living thing is in some way related to one of thesesystems, these continuing wholes; and that such wholes, though they may not in his eyes deserve the name of Individual, are yet sufficiently widespread and important to merit some title of their own. Put in other words, the major portion of this book is devoted to showing that living matter always tends to group itself into these closed, independent systems with harmonious parts. Though the closure is never complete, the independence never absolute, the harmony never perfect, yet systems and tendency alike have real existence. Such systems I personally believe can be identified with the Individuals treated of by the philosopher, and I have tried to establish this belief. But what's in a name? The systems are there whatever we may choose to call them, and if I have shown that, I shall be content. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Individual in the Animal Kingdom I must confess that when I made choice Animal Individuality as my subject, I had no idea of its real importance, its vastness and many ramifications: the teaching of philosophical biology is in England to-day somewhat of a Cinderella. The working out of the concept, full of interest as it was, brought also regret; a book of the size could have been - should have been - made from every twig and a stout octavo from the central trunk. This might not be; and the unavoidable compression must be pardoned. The general reader must imitate the Organic Individual (p. 26) and take unto himself wings of thought and conscious effort to skip across the imbridged gaps that perforce remain; with them to aid, I think he will find the stepping-stones not too far apart. The professed biologist must not cavil when he finds some merely general truth set dogmatically down as universal; in biology (still so empirical and tentative) there are always exceptions to the poor partial "Laws" we can formulate to-day. To have qualified every statement that needed qualification would have added much to the book's bulk without aiding the argument or being really more "scientific." My indebtednesses are great. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sexual Dimorphism in the Animal Kingdom: A Theory of the Evolution of Secondary Sexual The individuals generated by two parents of the same species are in many cases similar to those parents and to one another, with the exception of those irregular and generally slight differences which we call individual variations. But in other cases we find that the individuals generated by the same two parents differ greatly either from their parents or from one another, so that the species includes two or more well-marked forms or types, intermediate forms being more or less exceptional. The different forms may be sexually perfect, or may reproduce without sexual union, or may be quite sterile. When they are sexually perfect they unite in sexual intercourse and reproduce the same distinct types, which although constantly mingled in the fertilised ova, separate spontaneously in each successive generation, like oil and water after agitation. This is the well-known phenomenon of polymorphism. One of the most frequent cases of this is sexual dimorphism, the occurrence of characters peculiar to the males on the one hand, to the females on the other. Another important instance is the distinction of several classes of individuals in social insects, such as workers and queens, or workers, soldiers and fertile forms. Thirdly, we have to consider the important fact that the structure of the individual is not constant throughout its existence, but that in many cases there is a more or less com plicated metamorphosis, the difference between the two states of the same individual at different periods of life being often greater than that between individuals of distinct orders or classes. This eminent scholar brought to his subject the critical and reflective powers of a great intellect, and the varied and profound acquirements of a laborious life. Having possessed himself of the results of antecedent as well as contemporary investigations, and extended his researches with more or less exactness, over the entire animal kingdom, he was enabled to construct, upon the System of Nature, that remarkable system for the classification of animals, which now forms the basis of zoological science. This system of classification is founded exclusively upon the anatomical structure of animals, whence comparative anatomy is the source of its materials. It not only rejects the habits and properties of animals as immaterial and transient, but it also leaves out of consideration their mental endowments, which, however important in other respects, were incapable of affording a basis of classification. Under its clear and definite discriminations all the species of each of the four great branches of the animal kingdom are seen in intelligible and harmonious relations, notwithstanding their striking diversities of form. Unity of type runs through the structural organization of all the individuals comprised in each of these branches. The grandeur of this fourfold plan of creation is not more impressive than the wonderful adaptation of the surrounding elements to the condition and wants of the multitude of animal organisms which God has made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps to Zoology All these animals it is the business of the zoologist to divide into groups, so that those may be placed together which are alike, and those may be separated, more or less remotely, which are different. The task is one that no single individual could accomplish by his own efforts 3 but it has been done by the combined and successive labours of many. In this way the entire animal kingdom has been divided into a number of great groups, distinguished from one another by peculiarities of structure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Goldschmidt' coined the term "intersexuality" in 1915, he intended it to apply to normally dioecious species which exhibit some kind of mixture between male and female characters. However, as knowledge of the bewildering variability present in the sexual orga nization of members of the animal kingdom has increased, the original meaning of the word has changed. Today many authors define inter sexuality as "the presence of both male and female characteristics, or of intermediate sexual characteristics, in a single individual".2 This more extensive and widely accepted concept justifies the title of our book •. Among all the anatomical and physiological features of living organisms the reproductive system has a unique importance for the perpetuation of the species. Conversely, reproductive processes are of little or no account for the viability of the individual. Therefore, within the framework of general biology reproduction has all too often been looked at solely from the point of view of genetics. Lively discussions about genotypic versus phenotypic sex determination long dominated the sci entific literature on sexuality in animals; this one-sided emphasis has tended to obscure many important facets of an organism's ability to reproduce. Recent developments in current biological research have brought the classic problem of sex differentiation into focus again, and the rapid progress being made in comparative endocrinology has added a new di mension to the study of reproductive biology.

Book excerpt: As Dr. Engel emphasizes in this "enticing, well-referenced, [and] entertaining book" (Science), we can learn a lot about human health by studying animal behavior in the wild. Indeed, some of the natural, holistic, and alternative human medicine being practiced today arose through the observation of wild animals. In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Engel points out fascinating parallels between animal and human medicine. She offers intriguing examples of how animals prevent and cure sickness and poisonings, heal open wounds, balance their diets, and regulate fertility. For instance, *chimpanzees carefully eat bitter-tasting plant "medicines" that counter intestinal parasites *elephants roam miles to find the clay they ingest to counter dietary toxins *broken-legged chicks have been known to eat analgesic foods that alleviate pain. By observing wild health we may discover (or rediscover) ways to benefit our own health. As Craig Stotlz of the Washington Post noted, this "highly readable assessment . . . triggers more outside-the-double-helix thoughts about human health than anything I've read recently."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Is the tick a machine or a machine operator? Is it a mere object or a subject?” With these questions, the pioneering biophilosopher Jakob von Uexküll embarks on a remarkable exploration of the unique social and physical environments that individual animal species, as well as individuals within species, build and inhabit. This concept of the umwelt has become enormously important within posthumanist philosophy, influencing such figures as Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Deleuze and Guattari, and, most recently, Giorgio Agamben, who has called Uexküll “a high point of modern antihumanism.” A key document in the genealogy of posthumanist thought, A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans advances Uexküll’s revolutionary belief that nonhuman perceptions must be accounted for in any biology worth its name; it also contains his arguments against natural selection as an adequate explanation for the present orientation of a species’ morphology and behavior. A Theory of Meaning extends his thinking on the umwelt, while also identifying an overarching and perceptible unity in nature. Those coming to Uexküll’s work for the first time will find that his concept of the umwelt holds new possibilities for the terms of animality, life, and the framework of biopolitics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Zoology, Vol. 2: The Porifera and Coelentera The present volume is the Second Part in order of a com prehensive treatise on Zoology, which has been for some time in preparation under my editorship. In this treatise each of the larger groups of the Animal Kingdom is to be described by a separate author; whilst, as far as possible, uniformity in method and s00pe of treatment is aimed at. The authors are, for the most part, graduates of the University of Oxford, though it may not be possible to maintain this limitation in future sections of the work. The general aim of the treatise is to give a systematic exposition of the characters of the classes and orders of the Animal Kingdom, with a citation in due place of the families and chief genera included in the groups discussed. The work is addressed to the. Serious student of Zoology. To a large extent the illustrations are original. A main purpose of the Editor has been that the work shall be an independent and trustworthy presentation, by means of the systematic survey, or taxonomic method, of the main facts and conclusions of Zoology, or, to speak more precisely, of Animal Morphography.
