Book excerpt: India is frequently represented as the quintessential land of religion. Johannes Quack challenges this representation through an examination of the contemporary Indian rationalist organizations: groups who affirm the values and attitudes of atheism, humanism, or free-thinking. Quack shows the rationalists' emphasis on maintaining links to atheism and materialism in ancient India and outlines their strong ties to the intellectual currents of modern European history. At the heart of Disenchanting India is an ethnographic study of the organization ''Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti'' (Organization for the Eradication of Superstition), based in the Indian State of Maharashtra. Quack gives a nuanced account of the Organization's specific "mode of unbelief." He describes the group's efforts to encourage a scientific temper and to combat beliefs and practices that it regards as superstitious. Quack also shows the role played by rationalism in the day-to-day lives of the Organization's members, as well as the Organization's controversial position within Indian society. Disenchanting India contributes crucial insight into the nature of rationalism in the intellectual life and cultural politics of India.

Book excerpt: The Rationalist Manifesto is the observation of the divided Indian Society. It gives way for another perspective for the Indian People, that doesn't talk about supremacy, divisions or preservation, but reminds them about the hopes that the future generation of India has from them. The book is for those who have grown tired of the political and social dichotomy of the Indian State, and still have hope for their great nation and its people. Ideologies and myths have been broken down in this book in simple language so as to make people understand the deep rooted problems of our great country, problems that are often brushed under the carpet. This book sends a message that is time for India to rise to this occasion and make changes for itself in which the youth of this nation works for the prosperity of it and not take out time to solve its many problems. To understand the changes in our political regimes, our social and political identity, this book leaves no point untouched and covers everything dedicatedly."It is the people who have the most power, but unlike power knowledge, wisdom and truth are kept at bay. Power without truth, wisdom or knowledge is the personification of vulnerability, destruction and chaos. The state of Indian politics is never going to change until and unless the state of Indian society changes, it is where will, power and mandate resides-with the people. And by mere knowledge, one can't attain the truth as knowledge is a sword with wisdom as it's hilt, without the hilt none can use that sword."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the universe exist and what are you supposed to do in it? This question has been addressed by religions since time immemorial, but popular answers often fail to account for obvious aspects of reality. Indeed, if God knows everything, why do we need to learn through pain and suffering? If God is omnipotent, why are we needed to do good? If the universe is fundamentally good, why are wars, crime, and injustice all around us? In modern society, orthodox science takes the rational high-ground and tackles these contradictions by denying the very need for, and the existence of, meaning. Indeed, many of us implicitly accept the notion that rationality somehow contradicts spirituality. That is a modern human tragedy, not only for its insidiousness, but for the fact that it is simply not true. In this book, the author constructs a coherent and logical argument for the meaning of existence, informed by science itself. A framework is laid out wherein all aspects of human existence have a logical, coh

Book excerpt: A lawyer by training, a parliamentarian by conviction, a socialist in spirit Vasant Sathe has earned a place of distinction in the history of Indian politics. Brought up by parents on Tilak School of Thought in the midst of the freedom movement, this young, fiery student's passion to plunge headlong into this battle for the liberation of the nation from the British Rule set many a precedent. One such remarkable act was removing the Union Jack and unfurling the Indian Tricolour at the District Court at Nagpur, while facing a firing squad and police lathi-charge in the Quit India Movement in 1942, when he was merely 17. Memoirs of a Rationalist A boxing champion of Morris College, a linguist and commendable orator of Nagpur University, who coveted countless trophies, this connoisseur of classical arts defied the lucre of a legal career after graduating from Law College by taking up the cause of trade unions. And continued to work with industrial workers for almost three decades. Given his humanitarian ideology, he joined the Socialist Party right from its inception in 1948, and thereafter, joined the Congress under the leadership of Party Chairman Ashok Mehta, in 1964, fairly impressed by the Nehruvian vision of democratic socialism. Even before he made his debut as an MP in 1972, from Akola Constituency in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, he led the Indian Delegation for the Human Rights Committee in the General Assembly of United Nations during the Silver Jubilee Session of 1970. A close associate of Indira Gandhi, he witnessed the turbulent times with promulgation of Emergency in 1975, and went on to become the Deputy Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party during 1977-79, as a voluble spokesperson of the Opposition. And also became instrumental in giving a party symbol of hand to the newly formed Congress (I). Subsequently, he handled various portfolios with great lan, and his ministerial tenure in Information and Broadcasting, in 1980, became memorable, as he built bridges with media and film industry, fought tooth and nail to introduce colour television and also set up a network of Low Power Transmitters (LPTs) throughout the country, which today reaches out to more than 80 per cent of the populace. He ensured that Richard Attenborough's film, Gandhi, caught in a controversial imbroglio, finally got rolling and projected on the screen. Known to have stirred a hornet's nest by triggering a debate on the Presidential System of Government, he also pulled a lot of punches holding forth on restructuring of Indian Economy. Here's a candid, delectable political memoir of a rationalist, which though packed with action, motion, and emotion, never loses sight of the rationale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout India's history, religion has been the most powerful single factor in the development of her civilization. Today, despite her religious tradition, India is emerging as a secular state. In this book, Donald E. Smith explores the origin of the concept of secularization as it is found both in Indian culture and in the example of the western nations. He emphasizes the important role of secularization in India’s total democratic experiment and points out that the degree of its realization will undoubtedly affect the eventual character of democracy in India. In addition, the success or failure of the secular state in India cannot fail to influence the attitudes of her neighbors. Professor Smith considers the many aspects and implications of India’s attempt to secularize her government. Originally published in 1963. Book excerpt: About the Book A SHARP AND TIMELY ASSESSMENT OF WHAT THE PROTESTS OF 2020 SHOWED US ABOUT BEING INDIAN Originally a talk delivered at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, in February 2020, and then published as an essay in Social Research Quarterly the following year, On Being Indian is many things. On one level, it is a record of the various events and utterances that led up to and characterised the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in India. On another level, it questions, and shows us the limited value of, dichotomies such as the secular and the religious. The protests were an occasion for these humanist binaries to be dismantled exuberantly, often by thinkers who emerged at the time not from academic institutions but from diverse walks of life. Part analysis, part intellectual and cultural history, part literary criticism, and part an impassioned expression of, and meditation on, what it means to 'be Indian', this long essay is an exploration of how such a critique might be written in a way that's urgent but not journalistic; intellectually rigorous but not academic; political as well as imaginative. About the Author Amit Chaudhuri is an award-winning novelist, poet, essayist and musician.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law of Evidence has traditionally been perceived as a dry, highly technical, and mysterious subject. This book argues that problems of evidence in law are closely related to the handling of evidence in other kinds of practical decision-making and other academic disciplines, that it is closely related to common sense and that it is an interesting, lively and accessible subject. These essays develop a readable, coherent historical and theoretical perspective about problems of proof, evidence, and inferential reasoning in law. Although each essay is self-standing, they are woven together to present a sustained argument for a broad inter-disciplinary approach to evidence in litigation, in which the rules of evidence play a subordinate, though significant, role. This revised and enlarged edition includes a revised introduction, the best-known essays in the first edition, and chapters on narrative and argumentation, teaching evidence, and evidence as a multi-disciplinary subject.
