Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Church During the Great Rebellion: An Authentic Narrative of the Disasters That Befell It, Its Sufferings, and Faithfulness Unto Death of Many of Its European and Native Members It is only in modern times that the great idea of the Saviour, to send the gospel to all mankind, even to the utmost corners of the earth, is being accomplished. Previously this idea was only partially realised; and when the Church had sent the gospel to a new country, it remained satisfied for an age, and left posterity to prosecute further efforts. The thought of conveying the message of salvation to the whole family of man by one vast enterprise, and at one time, was not in reality the thought of the Church in any age prior to the age of modern missions. It may have entered the mind of many individuals as a most desirable thing; but it took no formal shape, and was embodied in no scheme. The page of ecclesiastical history, while it informs us how kingdom after kingdom in various parts of the world became Christianised, says nothing respecting any endeavour to bring the human race, in the aggregate, under the influence of the gospel. Book Synopsis India after the 1857 Revolt by : M. Christhu Doss
Download or read book India after the 1857 Revolt written by M. Christhu Doss and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together the varied and complex strands of anti-colonial nationalism into one compact narrative, Christhu Doss takes an incisive look at the deeper and wider historical process of decolonization in India. In India after the 1857 Revolt, Doss brings together some of the most cutting-edge thoughts by challenging the cultural project of colonialism and critically examining the multi-dimensional aspects of decolonization during and after the 1857 revolt. He demonstrates that the deep-rooted popular discontent among the Indian masses followed by the revolt generated a distinctive form of decolonization movement—redemptive nationalism that challenged both the supremacy of the British Raj and the cultural imperatives of the controversial proselytizing missionary agencies. Doss argues that the quests for decolonization (of mind) that got triggered by the revolt were further intensified by the Indocentric national education; the historic Chicago discourse of Swami Vivekananda; the nonviolent anti-colonial struggles of Mahatma Gandhi; the seditious political activism displayed by the Western Gandhian missionary satyagrahis; and the de-Westernization endeavours of the sandwiched Indian Christian nationalists. A compelling read for historians, political scientists and sociologists, it is refreshingly an indispensable guide to all those who are interested in anticolonial struggles and decolonization movements worldwide.
Book Synopsis Melodramatic Imperial Writing by : Neil Hultgren
Download or read book Melodramatic Imperial Writing written by Neil Hultgren and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melodrama is often seen as a blunt aesthetic tool tainted by its reliance on improbable situations, moral binaries, and overwhelming emotion, features that made it a likely ingredient of British imperial propaganda during the late nineteenth century. Yet, through its impact on many late-Victorian genres outside of the theater, melodrama developed a complicated relationship with British imperial discourse. Melodramatic Imperial Writing positions melodrama as a vital aspect of works that underscored the contradictions and injustices of British imperialism. Beyond proving useful for authors constructing imperialist fantasies or supporting unjust policies, the melodramatic mode enabled writers to upset narratives of British imperial destiny and racial superiority. Neil Hultgren explores a range of texts, from Dickens’s writing about the 1857 Sepoy Rebellion to W. E. Henley’s imperialist poetry and Olive Schreiner’s experimental fiction, in order to trace a new and complex history of British imperialism and the melodramatic mode in late-Victorian writing.
