Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine if the nurses and patients on the medical surgical units of an acute care facility perceived caring behaviors in the same way. A convenience sample of 120 nurse and 120 patient surveys was distributed. Forty-six percent of the nurse surveys and 40% of the patient surveys were returned. Nursing behaviors perceived as most caring by both nurses and patients focused on human needs assistance and the monitoring of patient conditions and demonstration of professional competence. Results of the study indicate that female patients perceived all caring behaviors to be more important than men did, especially in relation to the expression of feelings and teaching/learning behaviors. It was also noted that the longer a nurse had been practicing, the less important they perceived teaching to be. The difference noted in educational levels of nurses was that BSNs and PNs perceived teaching/learning behaviors as more important than did ADN nurses. Future research is recommended which would study ways in which caring behaviors affect patients' outcomes, especially those related to teaching and learning behaviors.

It is through its relationships with patients – whether these are absent, present, good, bad or indifferent – that modern day nursing is defined. Yet nursing work extends far beyond direct patient care activities. Across the spectrum of locales in which they are employed, nurses, in numerous ways, support and sustain the delivery and organisation of health services. In recent history, however, this wider work has generally been regarded as at best an adjunct to the core nursing function, and at worse responsible for taking nurses away from their ‘real work’ with patients. Beyond its identity as the ‘other’ to care-giving, little is known about this element of nursing practice. Drawing on extensive observational research of the everyday work in a UK hospital, and insights from practice-based approaches and actor network theory, the aim of this book is to lay the empirical and theoretical foundations for a reappraisal of the nursing contribution to society by shining a light on this invisible aspect of nurses’ work. Book excerpt: This was a descriptive study comparing the patients' perception of the relative importance of various nurse caring behaviors with the nurses' perception of the relative importance of the same nurse caring behaviors. A sample of 50 patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization and 50 nurses who care for patients having cardiac catheterizations were asked to complete a Caring Behaviors Assessment. Consistent with previous studies, the patients and the nurses both identified assistance with human needs as the most important. Patients and nurses also identified the expression of positive and negative feelings as the least important of the nurse caring behaviors. However, nurses in this sample ascribed less importance to all the nurse caring behaviors than did the patients.
