Book excerpt: Mining can have a positive impact on Namibia by contributing towards economic growth and infrastructure development, by creating jobs, and by increasing foreign currency earnings; but on the other hand, the exploration of natural resources often runs in parallel with corruption, exploitation, environmental devastation, and population displacement through migrant labour. It is therefore imperative for mines to be sustainable in their operations: in other words, mines must protect and enhance the economic, social and environmental milieus of Namibia. The main objective of a mining company is profit maximisation through exploitation of natural resources, and the company can therefore be defensive, even antagonistic, towards sustainable operations and sustainability reporting. The pressure from mining companies' stakeholders for them to be transparent in their operations, and to report on all sustainability-related issues is increasing, and research has indicated that mining companies are, in the majority, supportive of the initiative, and realise the advantages of pursuing sustainable operations. Research results from the study indicated that between the different types of companies, and between countries, there is a significant variation in the sustainability reporting performance, both delivered and required. Improvement opportunities were identified in a number of areas with regards to the quality, consistency and extent of sustainability reporting. The rationale and the motivation for this study was therefore to determine the standard of integrated sustainability reporting being achieved by mining companies in Namibia, in order to determine the needs and shortcomings in the sustainability reporting arena. The final deliverable of this study was to develop a reporting framework which could enable enhanced integrated sustainability reporting by providing the mining industry in Namibia with a structured framework that conforms to world class standards.

Book excerpt: Based on the concept of corporate social responsibility, this book analyses modern approaches adopted by mining companies that could minimise negative impacts of mining and enhance positive benefits to corporate stakeholders. Using a case study of two mining sectors (gold and diamond mining) the book evaluates policies and practices of mining companies within four key areas of corporate social responsibility: environmental protection, health and safety, employee relations and community development. Also included is an assessment of three models for community development that are developed within the mining industries: company-led approach, establishment of corporate foundation and tri-sector partnership. The study analyses management of corporate social responsibility issues with specific reference to mining in the Russian Federation and provides a comparison with global mining companies.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King Report III on Corporate Governance, 2009 was incorporated into the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listing requirements, which meant all JSE listed companies must comply with specific corporate governance practices and disclosures and meet compliance standards in their annual reports. The implementation of mandatory compliance requirements means that South Africa is leading the way by being one of the first country¿̐ưs to fully implement mandatory integrated reporting. The global recession of 2009 saw the need for a new form of corporate reporting that moved away from the traditional accounting and reporting methods, as their failures contributed to the financial crisis. The International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) was formed in 2010 to assist the framework of corporate reporting. The IIRC emphasised the need for reporting that would cultivate a corporate reporting environment that will focus on short, medium and long 0́3 term value creation. Integrated reporting seeks to achieve concise communication about how the organisation¿̐ưs strategy, governance and performance issues, in the context of its external environment that leads to the creation of value the short, medium, and long term. The South African mining industry contributes significantly to the local economy and remains one of the world¿̐ưs biggest mineral producer. Mining, is seen as integral part of local society as it impacts various sectors and industries, whilst managing investors and stakeholder expectations simultaneously. The need for greater transparency and reporting methods on social, financial issues is important especially where an industry, like mining, impacts all three issues. Since the mandatory implementation of integrated reporting, JSE listed companies have not seen immediate success with integrated reporting, it has been understood that it shall take time to comply and integrated the requirements and to remedy shortcomings. The mining industry is not only complaint with local reporting standards but also international best practice standards, the question that is raised is, whether the disclosure principles are being correctly applied to reporting in the South African mining sector? The need for cohesive, concise reporting is important, and as to whether the South African mining industry utilises all aspects of the integrated reporting principles, to its full potential, still remains to be seen. There are shortcomings and gaps that still need to be addressed, but there remains room for improvement and change. This paper will discuss the current state of integrated reporting in the mining industry and whether the implementation of integrated reporting is effective, and a further investigation on the failures, gaps and shortcomings that are faced within integrated reporting related to South African mining industry. This analysis of the following areas will provide information to whether integrated reporting is being utilised to its full potential by analysing the King Report IV on Corporate Governance, 2016 and the IIRC framework respectively.

Book excerpt: This book examines the determinants of the level of sustainability reports of mining companies in Ghana in the absence of regulatory and statutory requirements. It adopted the use of content analysis by probing the question of whether there is an effect of factors such as size, growth rate, profitability, efficiency, gearing ratio, working capital ratio, age, and complexity of the mining companies on the level of disclosure in sustainability report. The book also reviewed some of the traditional theories used in the accounting literature to examine sustainability reporting practices. The book also provides insights into the various sustainability reporting initiatives.

Book excerpt: Mining depletes, processes, and relocates mineral resources while profoundly changing landscapes and socio-economic patterns of affected regions and communities. For millennia these impacts have been "accepted" by society because of minerals' many benefits, but the growing environmental crisis is pushing up demand for socially responsible and ecologically viable mining practices. In reaction to these pressures, large mining corporations have been increasingly trying to make the business case for a sustainable mining industry. To demonstrate progress towards this "case", companies have started to publish sustainability reports based on a sustainability assessment and reporting tool called the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Framework. Many scholars have contested the effectiveness of that framework and argued that GRI-based reports can mislead decision-makers concerned with sustainability, or even camouflage unsustainable practices, particularly at the site level. Few scholars, however, have gone far beyond the realm of criticism to understand how to enhance that framework. This thesis addresses this gap. More specifically it sets out to answer the following questions: 1) what needs to be changed in mining corporations' approaches to assessing and reporting sustainability for the purpose of promoting more meaningful and reliable disclosures? And 2) what are the key practical and conceptual barriers to implementing those changes?

This study conducts content analysis to examine, ex post, whether the sample companies' voluntary sustainability reporting within their annual reports represents attempts to gain, maintain or repair legitimacy. It brings a new approach to analysing corporate disclosure and provides a strong case for employing legitimacy theory in explaining corporate disclosure. The analysis shows that the strategy of changing the perception of the "relevant publics" and the strategy of manipulating perception by deflecting attention from the issues of concern were adopted to a similar extent and more so than the other two legitimation strategies. The strategy of educating and informing its "relevant publics" about (actual) changes in an organisation's performance and activities was also adopted but not as frequently as those two strategies. The strategy of changing external expectations of an organisation's performance was adopted the least.
