Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Hope: A Restatement of the Doctrine of the Return of Jesus Christ Therefore, we must approach the doctrine of the Return of Christ upon the primary structure of the Word of God. World con ditions and cataclysmic events of astound ing magnitude are of secondary importance when it comes to the determination of the actual reality of our Lord's return. These conditions and events are of great value in the determination of the program of the age, but in the formation of that program they contain nothing but unproven sugges tions.. We must get back of the prevailing conditions in order to find a tenable support for our claims that the day of Christ is near at hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ But, alas, the roots of the tree penetrated to the fountain, and the whole was tainted, and now the spring is neglected and its waters forsaken. So men have often spoiled the truth as it is in Jesus by attempting to improve it. Instead of accepting it as it is in all its native plainness, undoctored and un alloyed, they have sought to subtract from it here and add to it there, and thus have either robbed it of its strength and glory, or turned thirsty souls from it altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Christ I shall admit that Mr. Inge's attack, and especially a remark in which he suggested that we upheld a formal orthodoxy based on extreme scepticism, drew from me the lecture that holds the eighth place in this volume. That lecture throughout, and the ninth in part, go beyond the general subject proposed for consideration. But to confine oneself too rigidly to that subject is to court misunderstanding. My pur pose is the exact opposite of that which Mr. Inge attributed to me when he condemned a sharp sever ance between the object of faith and the world of physical phenomena. But the concentration of faith and science on one object - one Person - cannot be safely efl'ected without the most careful distinction of the two methods. Otherwise the Christian faith will either be reduced to an acquaintance, more or less intimate, with certain events that happened some centuries ago - a sort of historical knowledge tinged with emotion - or shrivel into an acceptance of formal propositions defiant of reality. It astonished me a little to find myself accused of wishing to base formal orthodoxy on scepticism - or indeed on any thing else. Mr. Inge must have seen Mambrino's helmet flashing in the sun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ of the Gospels I have sought to carry out the purpose of the Founder of this Lecture as indicated in the Trust Deed, and, with others, I have found it difficult in a single treatise to meet the needs of a popular audience, and to satisfy the demands of those already versed in biblical study and criticism. The subject committed to me is one which will exhaust powers far greater than those which I possess, but such study as I have been able to secure has convinced me of its supreme importance at the present time, and I have endeavoured to bring before those who have entered into the Methodist Com munion of the Christian Church the findings of recent criticism of the Gospels, and to indicate the effect of such criticism on the message which those Gospels declare. Then when he saw that she was no longer afraid, he gave her the most wonderful message that was ever brought to a woman in all the years Since the world began. In the days that are to come, he said, God will send you a child. His name Shall be Jesus, and he shall be called the Son of the Highest. God will give him the throne of David forever. How can this be Mary asked; but the angel answered only, The power of the High est shall overshadow you, and the child shall be called the Son of God. It was all so strange that the young girl did not know even what question to ask, but she said meekly, I am the handmaid of the Lord let it be with me as you have said. The face of the angel grew still more radiant as he gazed tenderly upon her, and then he went away. All through the Silent night Mary thought about the words that the angel had spoken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Verily, Verily: The Amens of Christ 'Verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.' - Matt. v. 18. They to whom these words were first addressed by our Lord understood by "the law" the body of commandments and ordinances given to the Jews. But the copious illustrations of his meaning given by Christ in the exposition that follows enable us to apprehend it very clearly. He takes up one after another of the precepts in the observance of which the Jews were seeking to establish for themselves a righteousness and ground of acceptance with God, and discloses in them a fulness of meaning that had not been dreamt of. It was not intended that they who had refrained from actual murder and adultery should flatter themselves that they had religiously kept the commandments prohibiting those sins. We can easily admit, that under such direction they might prepare such narratives. But if they had no such assistance, then these four books are a profound mystery. But throughout these narratives, we find many acts and occurrences related, which, if true, prove beyond a question, that Jesus Christ is the Son Of God, and the Saviour Of men that Christianity is worthy Of all acceptation. He is said to have instantly restored sight to persons born blind and without using any means adapted to such a result. He is reported to have healed all manner Of malignant dis eases instantly, by a touch or a word. He is represented as raising the dead to life. Places and circumstances are mentioned, and some times the names of the persons. It is impos sible to deny or to doubt, that the facts stated are such as would be palpable to the senses, and, therefore, are susceptible Of being proved by testimony. Nor can it be doubted, that men capable Of writing these narratives, were possessed Of sufficient intelligence to know whe ther they themselves witnessed those things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crises of the Christ The authoritative literature concerning the history of the Lord Jesus Christ is contained within the New Testa ment. He is the supreme subject of the whole library. Every several book gathers its value from its testimony to His person, His teaching, or His work. The perfection Of the whole is created by its unification in Him. The first four of its books chronicle His deeds, and His words, during the brief span of a lifetime, lasting for a generation. The rest Of the book is occupied with the subject of His deeds and His words through all subsequent generations. The book of Acts is the first chapter in that history of the Church, which is the history Of the deeds Of Christ by the Holy Spirit through His people. The epistles contain the teaching of Christ by the Spirit, through chosen men, for the guidance of His Church until His second advent. The last book contains a prophetic vision of the final move ments, which shall firmly establish His reign over the whole earth. With me this final victory is not a matter of speculation at all, but positive faith; and to disbelieve it would be for me to cease altogether either to trust or worship God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks About the Crowned Christ Crowning the Christ is an intensely practical thing, whether taken in the personal sense or the world sense. He has been crowned in the upper world. With wondrous patience and graciousness He pleads for the personal crowning in our lives. Some day - no one knows just when - He will begin to act as the crowned Christ in all the affairs of our earth. The initiative of all action to-day on the earth is in man's hands. Some day the initiative of governing action on the earth will be in the hands of the crowned Christ, even while the personal initiative of each man's life will still be in his own hands. God is intensely practical. Jesus was never concerned about speculation nor mere discussion; He was too intent on helping people. The Bible is wholly a practical book. It is concerned only with helping us. It does not tell us all the truth there is; we shall be constantly learning more in the future life. But it does tell us all we need to know now. And its purpose in telling us what it does is wholly practical, - to urge us to right choice, and to lives that square with the choice. This is the purpose that decided just what truth should be told in the Book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
