To answer the research question, the study aimed to understand the socio-economic characteristics of the study area; governance of water resources; water-related conflicts and their management; and to analyze relatio [...] Reduction in the number of livestock through raids (66 per cent); loss of life and property; lack of water; degeneration of social relationships; forced migration of families and livestock; negative psychological and social impact of death; closure of the borehole; and intensified insecurity leading to reduced outdoor activities; among others-these are serious implications to a people already expe [...] The objective is to contribute to the understanding of the root causes of conflicts in arid and semi-arid lands, attempts made by local people, the government and other development agencies to manage the conflicts; resources required to sustain a conflict at the expense of other immediate needs within households; and the impact of conflicts on the people's assets and capabilities to sustain pastor [...] The district was purposely selected because it is the largest district in the arid and semi-arid lands, and is one of the most sparsely populated and least developed areas of Kenya. [...] The size and area covered by the district and the population of the district necessitated the use of sampling in the research process.

Livestock mortalities and morbidity, human morbidity, conflicts, food insecurity, reduction of livestock prices, and increase in food prices were among the socioeconomic impacts of drought experienced. Drought have also a great impact in pastoral society’s in terms of decreasing livestock trade and marketing, increasing conflict and insecurity, decrease the education and increase destitution among the societies. Drought is a major cause of poverty in pastoral communities. Pastoralists experience decline in levels of productivity from their herds following losses in livestock capital from deaths, low calving rates, low milk production and weight loss, which consequently reduce the market value of livestock through drought. It is therefore a fact that drought results in destruction and collapse of pastoralists livelihoods, dependence on food aid and long-term destitution. Furthermore, reduction of pastoralists’ purchasing power is one of the important economic effects of recurrent droughts. To cater for their nutritional and energy needs, pastoral communities purchase cereals and other foods with the proceeds from sales of livestock and livestock products.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established Data in Emergencies Impact (DIEM-Impact) to provide a granular and rapid understanding of the impact of large-scale hazards on agriculture and agricultural livelihoods using a variety of assessment methodologies, including primary and secondary information, remote sensing technologies, and FAO’s damage and loss methodology. DIEM-Impact presents a regularly updated and accessible state of food insecurity in fragile environments and helps underpin FAO's programming based on evidence.

Traditional pastoralism has proved to be a resilient and unique system of adaptations in a dynamic process of unpredictable climatic variability and continuous human interactions with the natural environment in dryland ecosystems. Pastoral adaptations and climate-induced innovative coping mechanisms have strategically been embedded in the indigenous social structures and resource management value systems. Pastoral livelihoods have, nevertheless, become increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts as a result of prolonged marginalization and harmful external interventions. The negative effect of global climate change has been an added dimension to the already prevailing crisis in the pastoral livelihood system, which is substantially driven by non-climatic factors of internal and external pressures of change such as population growth, bad governance and shrinking rangelands lost to competing activities.
