Download or read book Global Thinking and Local Action written by Uwem E. Ite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Based on extensive local field research undertaken in and around the Cross River National Park in Nigeria, this book provides a socio-economic study of the tensions between agriculture and nature conservation. Taking a ’bottom-up’ approach and focussing on the farm household and the dynamics of forest farming at household level, it brings together a wealth of new information on the subject of tropical forestry, the causes and dynamics of tropical rain forest loss and the problematic relations between conservation authorities in National Parks and local people. Its conclusions raise important questions about practical ways forward in the development of such areas.

Book Synopsis Forest Resources Management for Sustainable Development in Cross River State of Nigeria by : David O. Edu
Download or read book Forest Resources Management for Sustainable Development in Cross River State of Nigeria written by David O. Edu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article dwells on the importance of current management strategies of forest resources and the way forward vis-à-vis the sustainability of the Tropical High Forest (THF) for livelihood, housing and commerce. Over seventy percent of the Cross River State population, occupying about two thousand communities live in rural areas with their characteristic mud-walled and thatch-roofed houses. Their mainstay being crude agricultural practices involving mixed cropping, hunting, non-timber forest product gathering, fishing and other resources exploitation. The high poverty level of these agrarian communities has resulted in mass deforestation of the virgin rain forest biochure for lucre and livelihood. If the importance of the rural environment as a source of industrial raw-material, waste product recycling and a life support regulatory organ has to be appreciated, there is need for sustainable forest and land-use options to protect the natural habitats and biodiversities of our rural communities. Efforts to control the unsustainable timber logging, other forms of deforestation and poor land utilization such as concession granting, check posts/control points, tariff review, revocation orders, awareness creation, formation of community management committees, and introduction of alternative forest and land-use options, among others, are covered in this article. Given the maxims of local, national and global problems confronting the implementation of these strategies, recommendations are made on enhancing the roles played by the Cross River State Forestry Development Department and Land Ordinance Act for sustainable land-use and management of the State's forestry estates. The article concludes that enormous benefits would be reaped by Cross River State for the sustainable development of its local communities if adequate steps are taken to conserve its forest resources.
Download or read book Realising REDD+ written by Arild Angelsen and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REDD+ must be transformational. REDD+ requires broad institutional and governance reforms, such as tenure, decentralisation, and corruption control. These reforms will enable departures from business as usual, and involve communities and forest users in making and implementing policies that a ect them. Policies must go beyond forestry. REDD+ strategies must include policies outside the forestry sector narrowly de ned, such as agriculture and energy, and better coordinate across sectors to deal with non-forest drivers of deforestation and degradation. Performance-based payments are key, yet limited. Payments based on performance directly incentivise and compensate forest owners and users. But schemes such as payments for environmental services (PES) depend on conditions, such as secure tenure, solid carbon data and transparent governance, that are often lacking and take time to change. This constraint reinforces the need for broad institutional and policy reforms. We must learn from the past. Many approaches to REDD+ now being considered are similar to previous e orts to conserve and better manage forests, often with limited success. Taking on board lessons learned from past experience will improve the prospects of REDD+ e ectiveness. National circumstances and uncertainty must be factored in. Di erent country contexts will create a variety of REDD+ models with di erent institutional and policy mixes. Uncertainties about the shape of the future global REDD+ system, national readiness and political consensus require exibility and a phased approach to REDD+ implementation.

This unique publication will assist scientists, decision-makers and community members to take action to make countries, regions and cities more resilient.
Download or read book The Broken Hoe written by David Uru Iyam and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-06-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the Biase, a small ethnic group living in Nigeria's Cross River State, David Uru Iyam attempts to resolve a long-standing controversy among development theorists: must Third World peoples adopt Western attitudes, practices, and technologies to improve their standard of living or are indigenous beliefs, technologies, and strategies better suited to local conditions? The Biase today face social and economic pressures that seriously strain their ability to cope with the realities of modern Nigeria. Iyam, an anthropologist and a Biase, examines the relationship between culture and development as played out in projects in local communities. Western technologies and beliefs alone cannot ensure economic growth and modernization, Iyam shows, and should not necessarily be imposed on poor rural groups who may not be prepared to incorporate them; neither, however, is it possible to recover indigenous coping strategies given the complexities of the postcolonial world. A successful development strategy, Iyam argues, needs to strengthen local managerial capacity, and he offers suggestions as to how this can be done in a range of cultural and social settings.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Development and Underdevelopment in Africa by : Toyin Falola
Download or read book The Political Economy of Development and Underdevelopment in Africa written by Toyin Falola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Africa is too often regarded as lying on the periphery of the global political arena, this is not the case. African nations have played an important historical role in world affairs. It is with this understanding that the authors in this volume set out upon researching and writing their chapters, making an important collective contribution to our understanding of modern Africa. Taken as a whole, the chapters represent the range of research in African development, and fully tie this development to the global political economy. African nations play significant roles in world politics, both as nations influenced by the ebbs and flows of the global economy and by the international political system, but also as actors, directly influencing politics and economics. It is only through an understanding of both the history and present place of Africa in global affairs that we can begin to assess the way forward for future development.
Book Synopsis The Sacred Forest by : Henry Kam Kah
Download or read book The Sacred Forest written by Henry Kam Kah and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacred forest is a concrete place with a rich symbolic meaning. For the Laimbwe ethnic group of the North West Region of Cameroon, it is the centre of the social life, around which the people organize their matrilineal system. Henry Kam Kah describes the origin, development and the changes in matriliny as a gender construction from an insider point of view. Using written material and interviews with 150 persons, he shows how the system overcame all the various challenges since the 18th century, especially the rejection of matriliny by the colonial powers and Christian missionaries. With this study, Henry Kam Kah calls into question different prejudices of a Eurocentric gender research which believes in the dominance of patriarchal structures and the decline of other gender systems under the impact of global influence and pressure. Henry Kam Kah is Senior Lecturer at the Department of History of the University of Buea (Cameroon).

Book Synopsis Socio-Economic Factors Affecting Participation in Farm Forestry Among Farming Households in the Sahelian Environment of Borno State, Nigeria by : S. Mustapha
Download or read book Socio-Economic Factors Affecting Participation in Farm Forestry Among Farming Households in the Sahelian Environment of Borno State, Nigeria written by S. Mustapha and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study analysed the social and economic factors affecting the decision to participate in farm forestry by farmers in the Sahelian environment of Borno State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: analyse the social factors influencing the decision to participate in farm forestry among the respondents; examine the economic factors influencing the decision to participate in farm forestry among the respondents; identify the possible reasons (if any) for participation in farm forestry among the respondents; determine the perceived effects of farm forestry on livelihoods among the respondents; and investigate the constraints affecting the decision to participate in forestry among the respondents. Interview schedules were administered to 168 respondents which were analysed using descriptive (frequency distribution and rank order) and inferential (chi-square test) statistics. The study revealed that among the social characteristics of the respondents, age (X2=13.264; P ≤ 0.05) and household size (X2 = 11.344; P≤0.05) were statistically significant. The result also, indicated that all the economic characteristics; Farm size (X2=9.862; P≤0.05), Land Ownership (X2=7.269; P≤0.05), Educational Level (X2=16.723; P≤0.05) and Non Farm Income (X2= 18.236; P≤0.05) were statistically significant. The most important reasons for participation in farm forestry include the need for fuel wood (41.67%) and increased agricultural productivity (40.48%) of the respondents. The respondents had an agreed (mean score= 3.60) perception on the benefits of farm forestry. The major constraints affecting the decision to participate in farm forestry were lack of access to agricultural credit, followed by livestock browsing and incidence of bush fire. Policy recommendations were suggested to include the development of programmes to aid farming households to participate in farm forestry with increased access to credits and extension services coupled with vigorously pursued policy regulations on the environment.
