Book excerpt: Queensborough Community College and Houston Community College are two large, urban institutions that offer learning communities for their developmental math students, with the goals of accelerating students' progress through the math sequence and of helping them to perform better in college and ultimately earn degrees or certificates. They are two of six colleges participating in the National Center for Postsecondary Research's Learning Communities Demonstration, in which random assignment evaluations are being used to determine the effects of learning communities. At Queensborough, classes in all levels of developmental math were linked primarily with college-level classes, and at Houston, the lowest level of developmental math was linked with the college's student success class, designed to prepare students for the demands of college. A total of 1,034 students at Queensborough and 1,273 students at Houston entered the study between 2007 and 2009. The key findings presented in this report are: (1) Both Queensborough and Houston began by implementing a basic model of a one-semester developmental math learning community; (2) Learning community students attempted and passed their developmental math class at higher rates at both colleges; (3) In the semesters following students' participation in the program, impacts on developmental math progress were far less evident; and (4) On average, neither college's learning communities program had an impact on persistence in college or cumulative credits earned. With these results, a pattern is beginning to emerge in the experimental research on learning communities: Linked classes can have an impact on students' achievement during the program semester, but this effect diminishes over time. However, a fuller understanding will be gained as findings are released from the remaining three colleges in the demonstration. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between professional learning community (PLC) characteristics and levels of trust, and their impact on student academic achievement in fifth and eighth grade mathematics, based on Georgia's state academic test. This research was designed to answer the following questions: is student academic achievement impacted by perceived levels of PLCs? Is trust a determining factor in the implementation level of PLCs? Do schools that exhibit high levels of trust, and characteristics of PLCs, have higher student academic achievement scores? Is there a difference between middle and elementary schools in regards to student achievement when examining the effects of PLC implementation and level of trust? Data were collected from 59 elementary and middle schools in Georgia using Hord's (1996) School Professional Staff as a Learning Community Questionnaire (SPSLCQ) and the Omnibus T-Scale (Hoy & Tschannen-Moran, 2003). Student achievement data were obtained from the Georgia Department of Education website. Data were analyzed through correlations, stepwise backward regressions, and independent t-tests using SPSS 20.0. Results indicated that there is a strong relationship between trust and professional learning communities and that higher levels of trust in clients (students and parents) have an impact on student academic achievement. Results also indicated in this study that professional learning communities were not a significant predictor of student academic achievement; however they may have an indirect impact on achievement through the relationship with trust.

Many programs have demonstrably improved the lives of people trapped at the bottom of the social and economic ladder. Social Programs That Work provides an in-depth look at some of the nation's best interventions over the past few decades, and considers their potential for national expansion. Examined here are programs designed to improve children's reading skills, curb juvenile delinquency and substance abuse, and move people off welfare into the workforce. Each contributor discusses the design and implementation of a particular program, and assesses how well particular goals were met. Among the critical issues addressed: Are good results permanent, or do they fade over time? Can they be replicated successfully under varied conditions? Are programs cost effective, and if so are the benefits seen immediately or only over the long term? How can public support be garnered for a large upfront investment whose returns may not be apparent for years? Some programs discussed in this volume were implemented only on a small, experimental scale, prompting discussion of their viability at the national level. An important concern for social policy is whether one-shot programs can lead to permanent results. Early interventions may be extremely effective at reducing future criminal behavior, as shown by the results of the High/Scope Perry preschool program. Evidence from the Life Skills Training Program suggests that a combination of initial intervention and occasional booster sessions can be an inexpensive and successful approach to reducing adolescent substance abuse. Social Programs That Work also acknowledges that simply placing welfare recipients in jobs isn't enough; they will also need long-term support to maintain those jobs. The successes and failures of social policy over the last thirty-five years have given us valuable feedback about the design of successful social policy. Social Programs That Work represents a landmark attempt to use social science criteria to identify and strengthen the programs most likely to make a real difference in addressing the nation's social ills.

Book excerpt: This investigation was a quasi-experimental study to demonstrate whether learning communities have a positive impact on performance of students in prealgebra, especially for underrepresented students. The learning community for this study was a prealgebra course linked with a student success course at a southern California suburban community college. This study used student outcome data to determine whether learning community participation contributed to an increased rate of retention, success and persistence for students in prealgebra. This study also used student demographic and outcome data to determine if retention, success and persistence in prealgebra could be predicted based on a student's age, ethnicity, gender and learning community participation. Lastly this study used qualitative data in the form of surveys and focus groups to determine what students enrolled in a prealgebra course identified as the critical aspects of the learning community experience. Developmental education is primarily done through community colleges with over 60% of all community college students enrolling in at least one developmental education course.In addition, most underrepresented students enroll in higher education through the community colleges and the majority of the students in developmental education are underrepresented. Furthermore, more students require remediation in mathematics than other subjects. While the retention, success and persistence of developmental students have been extremely low, historically underrepresented students have fared much worse, with even lower rates of retention, success and persistence. Two of the most influential predictors of student retention and persistence outlined in the literature were student-to-faculty and student-to-student interactions and one way to increase the involvement of students and collaborative learning is through learning communities. While research shows that learning communities help increase the retention, success and persistence of underrepresented students, there is not much research found on the success of learning communities in developmental math. Overall the literature reported that learning communities have a structure the helps increase the chance of success for students, especially underrepresented students. While findings showed no significant relationship between learning community participation and retention, success or persistence, the increased success and persistence rates of students enrolled in the learning community are promising. It was determined that success could be significantly predicted for students who were not underrepresented and there was a significant difference in the persistence of not underrepresented students who took prealgebra in a learning community compared to not underrepresented students in the control group. Therefore, learning communities may not be as helpful for underrepresented students as previously thought and need to be constantly evaluated to increase student outcomes for underrepresented students. Students identified three themes as the critical aspects of the learning community experience: community environment, study skills and overcoming math anxiety. Overall, students indicated the learning community experience as well as the skills learned in the student success course were beneficial and would help them in their future endeavors
