Book excerpt: As one result of the accountability movement in American postsecondary education, accrediting agencies have increased their emphasis on student learning outcomes assessment. Among other consequences, this change has impacted the manner in which institutions of higher education (IHEs) plan, implement, assess, and revise the general education portion of their curricula. Yet, although accreditation has promoted the practice of general education assessment, studies suggest that it has not necessarily helped IHEs to use assessment effectively for improvement. In particular, community colleges have faced unique challenges in implementing general education assessment plans and using their results for improvement. This single case study sought to illuminate the manner in which the convergence of environmental characteristics and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education's (MSCHE) re-accreditation and sanctioning processes impacted a community college's plans for assessing general education. To accomplish this, the researcher conducted an intensive examination of a community college, which MSCHE had recently required to submit a progress report that detailed specific improvements to the IHE's plan for assessing general education. The data showed that re-accreditation served as a primary motivator for changes to this IHE's approach to general education assessment. However, interview responses suggested that MSCHE could have assisted the community college by providing more support as institutional leaders sought to produce a required progress report that sufficiently documented their general education assessment plan. Four overarching components of the institutional environment had a complex impact on the community college's ability to meet accreditation standards. The physical environment neither stimulated nor inhibited efforts to meet standards at this IHE and the human aggregate environment had a predominantly positive impact on these efforts. Data related to the organizational environment proved mixed. While some stimulants of change existed, other organizational factors inhibited the ability of this community college to meet MSCHE standards related to general education assessment. Finally, the constructed environment of collective beliefs had an overwhelmingly positive impact on these efforts. These findings led to several recommendations for the case study IHE, MSCHE, the state, and future researchers. In addition, they have yielded valuable insights about the combined impact of the regional accreditation process and environmental characteristics upon an IHE's ability to meet standards in areas such as general education and assessment. The recommendations may assist other IHEs needing to improve both their general education assessment plans and, more broadly, their ability to meet the standards of regional accrediting bodies. Furthermore, they may assist regional accrediting bodies and states with improving their ability to facilitate substantive change.

Book excerpt: Every college struggles to create processes of quality assurance and continuous improvement to demonstrate and ensure its service to students and community. Accreditation is one avenue that ensures some uniformity across many institutions in the eyes of the public. While this paper focuses on accreditation processes and meeting the needs of accrediting commissions, it is important to remember the overarching goals of service and improvement when devising systems appropriate to each individual college. There is no one way that colleges meet accreditation standards. The standards reflect the minimum requirements expected of institutions and each institution must find its own way to best serve the needs of the community and uphold the standards of educational quality. This paper outlines some effective practices colleges should consider and regularly review both in terms of processes and topics as well as in terms of the most recent Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Standards adopted in 2014. The following is appended: ACCJC Bio Data Form for Evaluators.

Groups commonly referred to as minorities-including Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and Alaska Natives-are the fastest growing segments of the population and emerging as the nation's majority. Despite the rapid growth of racial and ethnic minority groups, their representation among the nation's health professionals has grown only modestly in the past 25 years. This alarming disparity has prompted the recent creation of initiatives to increase diversity in health professions. In the Nation's Compelling Interest considers the benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity, and identifies institutional and policy-level mechanisms to garner broad support among health professions leaders, community members, and other key stakeholders to implement these strategies. Assessing the potential benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity among health professionals will improve the access to and quality of healthcare for all Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how a participatory approach to assessment and accreditation in their new forms creates a synergy for learner-centered education. It is a guide to approaching the accreditation process from a campus-wide perspective of ownership--illustrated by rich descriptions of how faculty, students, and administrators at California State University Monterey Bay engaged with and successfully focused their accreditation processes on the improvement of their practices. The approach that the authors describe was driven by a commitment to go beyond satisfying the accreditation expectations so as to promote ongoing and long-term improvement of student learning. It also reflects the shift of responsibility for assessment within institutions from a designated office to individual faculty and staff, entire departments, and the campus as a whole. The authors document strategies that are practical—ready to use or adapt—that are appropriate for all campuses. They also provide guidelines for the documentation process that accreditation demands. They demonstrate how they reduced traditional resistance to assessment by emphasizing its use for the improvement of student learning, helping faculty with their own teaching, and creating frameworks for continuing improvements that are valued by faculty. The authors emphasize the need for every institution to take into account its unique mission, vision, and core values; and to recognize the importance of individual departmental cultures. Although their accreditation "triggered" CSUMB’s engagement with assessment, the authors discuss other opportunities for jump-starting the process.
